ID for Lighters!?!?

What the hell. I went to Tops today to buy some lighters because I was low. I'm only 16 keep in mind. I put the lines on the belt and get up to the cashier and she tells me I have to be 18 and have an ID. I was pretty surprised.....I had no clue you had to be 18 to buy some fucking lighters....what's the big deal.

Has anyone heard of having to be 18 to buy lighters? Do you kids under 18 get denied lighters?

Try a gas station, they will even sell you cigs and/or rolling papers if you look somewhat near 18 and few people are in the store. I'm 14 and buying lighters ain't a problem, except from fucking 711.

Im 15 and i stopped having this problem maybe last year or so.
i would be really embarrassed and surprised if i was denied sale of anything other than alcohol and a lot less embarrasment for blunts. confidence seriousness and a stong voice and the thought never goes through their head. just for this im gonna try the new store here for a blunt and a lighter. ill let ya know

edit: A friend of mine, I have not done this personally said that you should buy one of those precharged american express cards or something, and use on of those and you can buy bongs and bowls and papers or w/e you want from a website if you're underage as long as you use a precharged credit card DO NOT however buy a precharged giftcard from the website, like don't bu an amazon card just buy one of the credit card things. but once again, I don't know if it will work.

well I know of a gas station that will sell me alcohol and other stuff without carding me but I don't have m license yet so someone needs to drive me up there. It's just a regular gas station too, it's not like it's 20 miles out in the ghetto or something, and it's a major chain.

what i do is go to a gas station early morning buy a drink and some gum when they ask anything else just be like "uhh yeah mise well get a lighter while im here" take a bic off the rack, toss it on the counter. thats what i do and they will sell it..

I've been carded for lighters before when I was around 14 and 15, but never again after that. It seems to depend on where you go and how old you look, as long as you got a little facial hair MOST store clerks don't seem to give a fuck about lighters.

Im not being argumentative , but I work retail as well and my understanding is that tobbaco products are very hard to define , I know stores that have gotten away with selling pipes as keychains. Basically if the lighters are held behind the counter they count as a tobbaco products if they aren't its not.

By law all tobbaco products cant be in a user servicable area

Anything tobbacco related you have to be legal age, which is 18 in most places. Not all places do that here though (Canada). Actual tobacco, yes, you get carded. Some places even if you look under 25, but for lighters and shit, most places will just sell it to you if you look old enough.

The people hired to work at these stores know that you have to be 18 to buy lighters, but most people think this is a stupid kind of law and the managers or someone who's been working at the store for a while will sell you one without thinking twice, while new people working their think they would get yelled at for something like that. I've never been denied a lighter from a store, but some lady was messing with me saying "you aren't going to burn your house down with it or anything are you?" "No, just play with fireworks :P"
