This will be a cool thread to watch. I am trying my frist balcony Vegtable, Herb and house plant grow. I have only grown Mary J and some pre bought house plants up to this point. I look semi foward to the challenges.

I should be able to grab some good help in this thread. If growing Veggies and Herbs is anything like Growing Mary J I know im gonna need it!! :wtf: :wtf:

I bought all Heirloom seeds from Victory seeds.

I have already started Abe Lincoln, Crimson Cushion, Louisiana Red, and Katinka/(cherry) tomatoes.

Jalapeno and Cayanne. California Wonder and Royal King bell peppers. Hungarian Sweet Banana peppers.

The rest of these get planted around the first of April.
Cucumbers = Delikatessa and Ashley.

Carrots (for my daughter.....she had to have some) Chantenay Royal

Watermelon = Georgia Rattlesnake

Pole Bean = Kentucky Wonder

Now listen. I started those tomatoes and peppers 3 seeds to a Jiffy and got better than 98% germination. I have tomatoes and peppers coming out of my ears! I have been giving away little plants to anybody that will take them.

Seriously.....if any of the above strains interest any of you, shoot me an e-mail and I would be happy to send some seeds your way. I have way more than I could ever use.

kd, i look forward to it! when are you planting?

I guess I should be starting soon eh? Seems kinda cold here..

the only veggies I think I should tackle this year are some simple ones. Any help or ideas?

I was thinking of regular tomatoes, and cherry tomatoes. I wanted to do a green pepper. and mayeb a cuckumber. I don't have loads of space. But ifigured these veggies wouldn't be too bad to grow. I also want to do some Rubarb I love Rubarb... And I rember it growing like a wild weed at my moms house.So i hope its fairly easy to grow.

the herbs I was thinking of would be,, parssley, Mint and rosmerry, anything else I shoudl try?

Any help is greatly appreciated..

thanks Kindly..

Hey, KP! That looks like an awesome collection of veggies you got there. I really look forward to this log. I hope you keep us updated often, so we can all be learn-ed on these types of things.

I actually bought a few packs of veggie seeds recently in hopes to grow them. I'm not sure if I want to set up an indoor garden for those or just try to do them outside. I don't know exactly what I have, but I will check and get back with you. Off the top of my head, I know I have some sort of Cherry Tomato, Roma, some Jalapenos, some Cayenne, two types of mint (for my gf) and a couple other things.

Damn, Oh F Yeah, that's a bunch of party cups there! If I was in the market, I'd take ya up on it. Looks like you're drowning in them! haha.

^ lol........true that! I figured if I planted 3 to a Jiffy and got 1 for each Jiffy, I would be good. Soooooo.....when all 3 broke ground and started growing.....being the kind of guy I am....I just couldn't kill any so I repotted them in the Dixies and now have 3X what I was shooting for.

Not sure where you live, but from what I have educated myself on, you could/should start those tomatos and peppers 4 - 6 weeks prior to date of last frost so that they can get a good start and be ready when that date arrives. Be sure and "harden off" (meaning acclimate them to the outdoors) the tomatoes for a couple of weeks before planting them in the garden after the last frost.

Good luck to all!

I have wanted to start a veggie/herb garden on my porch, but it gets fairly cold in my region during the winter so I am unsure they will survive. However any ideas on some that would survive send 'em my way as I will start that for shure.

Stay Fresh.

Good V....it's really not about what happens in the winter. I think pretty much, we all count on nothing growing outside during the winter (unless in a greenhouse). It's all about spring / summer / fall. Tomatoes, for instance, take about (correct me if I'm wrong) 90 days to bare fruit. So say the average last day of frost in your area is May 1st. You started your tomatoes indoors April 1st, you would be ready to put them in your planter (pot, container, etc) outside May 2nd. You would start getting fruit Mid July or so. Theortically this would continue through the first frost in Sept/Oct/Nov.

^ Cucumbers may be difficult on a balcony because they grow on vines that like to climb. However, if you provide them some sort of tressel, you could certainly pull it off. Kind of a neat challenge, actually.

DO IT! Then post pictures!

here's an idea; use the pickets and rails of the balcony as a trellace...

just train it along the floor. :)

f<r>og, i start mine indoors, due to the late last frost, and plant just after outdoors in the garden. all in all, i hope to have a good little grow this year; the ones i started last nite are the first wave...:cool:

I've gotta little while before we can plant here. I'm just starting some flowers indoors this weekend....Actually an ornamental grass I've been dying to grow..gets to be 12-20 feet...yee-haw!
I'll be back once I start my tomatoes and peppers. I might do onions too, but I've never have tried...need to do more research. I'm gonna can this year.
