Anyone else here have synesthesia? Speak up! Let's see those alphabets :D
My alphabet is the colors I see them, as well as the genders of the letters. Maybe I'll post personalities.
Synesthesia is not really a disorder, but more of a genetic abnormality? I see my letters, numbers, months, days of the week, months, years, and ect. as having their own distinct personalities, colors, genders, ect.
I also see moods and people's personalities as colors, and sometimes shapes.
For the mods: I didn't put this in medical, because it's not really a medical condition, more like a character trait.

I never have heard it described as a genetic abnormality as much as just a sensory-perceptive difference. I think it's fascinating and wish I had it. But I don't.

For me, the letters have the following colors:
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
Most of these were drilled into my head by a multicolored letter magnet set I used to play with when I was little, but some of the colors have changed from what they were in the magnet set. When I read a word, the word usually seems to be the color of the first letter of that word.
The numbers look like this:
123456789, plus the number 0 is white.

thats actually really interesting, I give numbers and letters their own personalities, but never there own colors or symbols,
like "A" is a snooty bitch that always has to have her way,
and "Z" is very quiet, a loner, and often forgotten

You don't give them their own symbols? I do. For example, O is a circle, V is two diagonal lines, and 3 is two half-circles stuck together. :p

That is also a form of synesthesia, called "Operational Linguistic Personification"- I have that as well, mixed with chromographic synesthesia.
And yes, there are a few letters that can be male and female, depending on their usage.

Hmm, Purple Banana and I seem to agree that A is red, C is yellow, D and F are green, L is purple, M is red, and W is the only gray letter. Very interesting.

Sometimes. The letter colors themselves might vary one or two every few years, and people change their colors, too.
It's very cool. It gets more realistic if I'm stoned, just lay back, relax, and think of each individual letter.
I might do a painting series of each letter, been thinking about that. Would you guys buy 'em?

I wouldn't buy them but,,,that does not mean i am not fascinated by this... really hard for me to understand this whole thing,,,to the point i might even be a sceptic,,,not saying I am but,,, it's hard to imagine...

I always grew up picturing words and letters in colors in my head..
...same goes for days of the week...
..and months of the year..
It's odd..
...but I always thought it was something every did.

Total mindfuck... apparently I do not have this condition... or personality trait... or gift... or whatever.
I totally have that!@ omg its so crazy i can never really say the exact colors. and i have personallity for numbers too and its really odd... like the number 7 is like a bully and the number 9 is really nice. i thought i was crazy this whole time or something. i even tried explaining this to someone and they said "wtf are you talking about???" its hard to see if you dont have it i guess. and its not when i see text- because text is just black to me but whenever i picture a letter in my mind it always has a color

i think its actually more of a neurological condition or disorder rather than an actual trait. i think its a symptom too. you can have a stroke and develop it.
Purple Banana
03-12-2007, 01:45 PM
It's not a classified DSM diagnosis, therefore, it's not a neurological condition or disorder, as it doesn't really affect a person in a substanstial way. It's more of a genetic trait than anything else. Most people grow up with it, thinking everyone has it, but it's very very uncommon. It may run in families- for example, no one in my immediate family has it, but my cousin does.
Different people can have different degrees of types of it, and yes, sometimes it can develop after a stroke or a major accident. Because most people enjoy having it, it's not really an issue that people are actively trying to cure, or even detect.

Never really thought about it too much, but this seems familiar to me. I don't think it's really anything more than creativity IMO.
I don't really do the whole letter thing but I know what you mean, because with music, there is definitely something there for me. I can 'see' music, and each song is a color or two. It's kind of cool really, and I've thought about it before, but never in the sense that it was different or something.
Anyway, wow...learn something new everyday...pretty awesome stuff Banana.

Wow, reading up on this now...crazy.
"In spatial-sequence, or number form synesthesia, numbers, months of the year, and/or days of the week elicit precise locations in space (for example, 1980 may be "farther away" than 1990), or may have a three-dimensional view of a year as a map (clockwise or counterclockwise)."
I realize that I definitely do that ^. When I think of the days of the week, no colors or anything, but I do kind of 'picture' the week in order. Same with the months of the year. Same with years just like it says. It's explained pretty well...sort of like a map with things being 'farther away' and shit.
Holy shit LOL...

By that i mean the numbers that happen to have the same color and sex as a letter.:)

It just is....I think number 6 (and my mind says she is motherly...blah blah blah, I think quickly of all the info about her, kinda like linking the information together)
I don't have the color thing, btw....there are two ways of percieving it apparently, in your mind linked to it internally (like mine and TallulahGreen) and there are some people that actually 'see' it externally. Such as seeing a color behind a person...
I am also and ONLY child (barring a half sister that lived 10 states away). I always had thought this is why I had personalities for letters and numbers, lol. Kind of a relief that it isn't. It has always been like this since I knew what numbers/letters were. I remember asking people about it, and they usually looked at me quizically.

It's weird. It's not like I actually physically see the letter A on a piece of paper and can't tell it's not red. I can see that it's black ink on white paper, but it *seems* red in the same way that an apple in a black-and-white movie would remind you of the color red. I can't not think of it as a red letter, no matter what color it actually is on the page.

I'm number 5 of 7... I was always the weird one, like I had spider farms, I read Nat'l Geographic while other girls played with their Barbies, I used to look at something, like a ceiling fan or a blade of grass, and imagine what it would be like to be tiny and have your perspective of the world from that point. And when I grew up, I wanted to be an entamologist.
I read Tolkien a lot, too.
I'm still weird, but they appreciate it now.

Everybody is weird. There is no such thing as a normal person. Those girls who played with their Barbies and *appeared* normal were really just hiding their weirdness from you. Everybody has their own quirks that makes them crazy in their own individual way. That's what makes us all unique.
