does anyone think it would hurt my flowering plants to get like 5 seconds of light while i get in my cabinet to try my other bulb?

I had same exact problem. Some of the hardware isn't secured completely in the ballast. Give it a good punch or two while it's plugged in and it will kick the light on.
-on another note, the ballast gets very warm. keep that in mind.

I had the exact same problem with a MH 400 from there... the socket is REALLY tight... don't worry, a HID bulb is pretty strong, I just very firmly gave it a little more muscle and it was fine.
BTW that light took a while for the ballast to charge up and ignite... are you wainint long enough?

Take the cover off and look for loose wires and such and tighten them up, unplugged of course. Capacitors (Little soda cans) store the charge so be aware.

you need to punch it..a couple of times. Trust me the same exact thing happened to me after I moved my ballast when hooking up my light...one second it worked fine, the next second it wouldn't ignite. Punched it twice as a last resort and it started working. do it if you want your light to work.

evert you really need to carefully screw the bulb in tighter... don't be afraid of it... the guy at inside sun already told me if i broke mine trying to screw it in he'd send a replacement... DO NOT kick your ballast. And unless you know what you're doin, I'd be really wary of taking the cover off. A charged capacitor of that size is VERY dangerous even if the ballast is unplugged... the charge is still there... ZZZZAP fried evertking, anyone?

Had some problem here. Its most likely the central contact in the E40 bulb holder, sometimes the bulb doesn’t reach it and there for the circuit isn’t complete! un screw ur bulb and pull the spring like plate that hits the top of the bulb down a little. The the bulbs circuit is complete! :)

what done it..? I'm curious. I got nothing but a hum...screwed and unscrewed bulb several times took it apart..still nothing. My last resort was punching it. After the second time the bulb came right on. I would like to know what you did to solve it though for a future reference
