View Full Version : Rev's Grow Log- 1st Stage: from legs to bush
Welcome to Rev's Grow Log
Come, see the 1st 4 entries of my grow log! So far so good. my seedlings started out super leggy, but have really bushed out since the transplant. This is my 3rd indoor grow attempt, the 1st two having failed. (1st: over watering, temp flux & heat, 2nd nute burn)
Havne't yet feed the plants, keeping temps @ 75-80, hum @ 50-60, 250mh 24/7.
Have 24sq. feet. and a 400 hps/mh digital and want to line walls w/ flouros. Have hermetically sealed the room and want to experiment. w/ co2 & ac.
Got some water on a few of them early on big drops, caused some serious rust spots on lower leaves [see last pic] which flipped me out for a while, but now I know...its not nute related.
Should've started in containers this big, but the transplant wasn't too traumatic, infact it really encouraged them.
Can't wait to fire up some more lights for my plants!

Hi Rev
Get a timer and put your plants on 18/6 light period, heres why :
Grow Marijuana FAQ, Cannabis cultivation - marijuana growing tips & photos (http://www.drugs-forum.com/growfaq/1466.htm)
If you do use nutrients make sure you only mix it 1/4 strength!! Then after 2 weeks go to half strength and then to full.
Peace :rastasmoke:
Hmmm. I've heard much debate on the subject of 24/7 vs 18/6. A simple question, and one that I'll inevitable have to grapple with sooner or later:
how do I keep temps steady @ 'night'?
Wait, isn't this the time when someone is supposed to impart some knowledge? Well, I guess I'll uh, answer myself on that one. I'll try to post more pix later today. Just gave them 3/4 tsp./gal of Earth Juice Grow and a few drops of liquid compost. I am workin of buildin them a new.additional light, running off a generic MH/HPS 400w digiballast. Found this great piece of italian glass. I love its wide, flat, squatness. I'm attaching it to this old industrial MH fixture. I want to build in a cooling system...run a duct to it and out of my g.r. via my squirrel cage.
Am going to buy a little electric heater later today that will switch on when the lights go off. Hopefully tonight will be my first 18/6. After what blank_21 told me, and others, It seems like 24/7 makes absolutely no sense, breaks the bank and the roots...tho this is my first 24/7 and my first successful grow so far...it must be due to other factors, namely, its kept my temps steady. No purple stems on these little ones.
Really I've heard it a bunch, but watching temp flux, and keeping real careful on watering and nutes are words all noobs [myself among them] should live by.

Lookin' good rev. You might wanna becareful with that stray wire near your moist plants. Just a thought.
As far as the 24/0 - 18/6 debate, I prefer 18/6, but those who are in a hurry to veg will go 24/0 without negative results. It's more of a prefernce thing.
Good luck with your new light.

Small fan heater with A thermostat :)
Whaddup!
Ok. Been growin for 3 weeks now from leggy sprout phase.
The nutes [@ 4 nodes growth] went well from what I can tell. Some are up to 6 nodes now.
Check the new Light! 400w agro. I'm losing a little light through the top of the glass, but it works for now. Amped up the exhaust to compensate for the extra heat. Wanna weld on some custom fitting so I can hose the heat directly out. If I even stick with it...Am thinking about a cooltube, I could see this getting too hot.
Note the clutter in b.g. I'm making racks for vert. fluoros. canopy already starting to thicken. wanna get side lighting to all those burgeoning lateral growths. Am thinking about a ScrOG (or however you guys capitalize it)
These really GROW. Its almost scary! They are going to be crowded soon unless I start some super croping, or LSTing, etc. Also, I think a transplant may be in order soon, though I'd like to sex them first, whereupon I'd like to rock some clones. Any advice?
The big question is do I scrog or lettem shoot up? I have the height. I thought if I interspersed these fluoros i could get the light penetration on the vert...tho I've never seen anyone do that.
Pics are 3/2, 3/6 [crappy cell phone], and the homeade light.
Thanx for droppin by

Oh and greenfog thanks for the heads up bout the wire, but its not live, ist a part of the floro racks I'm makin up.

Buy a digital thermometer that you can attach a heater too, then set the thermometer to switch the heater on when the temp gets too low

Hey, rev. Lookin' good.
Well, first off, glad the nutes are going well. I don't see any burns. So you're up to 4-6 nodes now?
Hmmm...WWTGFD? Well, I would most likely top those plants now, and clone the tops. Then, when the tops rooted (1-2 wks), I would throw them into a temporary flower chamber, where I would determine their sex (another 1-2 wks).
In the mean time, my original plants would have been a bit stunted by the topping, but filling out on the sides due to the transfer of hormones to the sideshoots. This would also give me about 1 month to finish vegging them and training them to whatever form I would prefer.
SCRoG (that's how I capitalize it)...is good...very good, but not a beginner's task, if you ask me. You can get close to the same results by pruning (topping) and/or LSTing your plants to make them bush out and just flower them like that.
If I wanted to avoid topping, I would LST them now (bend them over) and then wait for a viable clone to pop up so I could cut it for sexing...but that would take longer...maybe another 1-2 wks.
I wouldn't personally just let them shoot up because then they become difficult to deal with, even with side lighting. The side lighting IS a good idea, though, but I think you probably haven't seen many people use them purposely to grow a tall plant because they just aren't as effective as Sodium lamps.
Let us know what you decide! :D Good luck.

Hey Rev..looking good! Yours are bit bigger and bushier than mine. Good work! I am in the same boat as you. I am going to wait till I find out the sex and then will transplant. I guess I will eventually have to LST, however I am not really looking forward to it because I am not exactly sure what I am doing.
I love being not exactly sure what I'm doing, cause that means I'm learning!
Thank all for the advice and support
a few q's...
how would an 18/6 schedule affect the development of viable clone vs. 24 hr?
I already have a flowering chamber...its my first cab, now attached to the ceiling in my new G.R.! (see pic!)
Do I cut under last node and...never mind, I can research cloning.
I've heard of some people just putting a bag over selected branches to determine sex. My guess is this works, but is too labor intensive? seems like it would be quicker tho.
Why shouldn't a noob attempt a ScRoG? ;)
There are 2 plants that want to shoot up, the other 5 are staying super bushy. Take a look at the side shot of a bushier 1, specifically the lower lateral growth. Are these clone worthy yet? Guess I'm a little pensive about topping all of them, as speed is a priority for me at this point...
Also c a better overall shot
Talk soon!

Temps running a bit high w/ the new light, 80 +/- 3. Humidity 35-40. Am giving plants 250w MH from the side as well as 400 from the top. Noticing impressive lateral growth, as well as some interesting stem undulations. Could directional side lighting be a form of LSTing?
Want to water today. Am debating whether or not to fert w/ same solution I did a few days ago, or to give them a break. Also am really considering a transplant. My old plants started dropping leaves when I didn't give them enough root room!! WWYD?

Hey Rev...looks like I am going to have to transplant today. Looking at mine, they just really need to be. What are you thinking?
I'm thinking the exact same thing. Just gotta find some more buckets! Lemme know how it goes. I'll drop by soon.
Ok. Haven't transplanted yet. Got some pics tho, sbeen a while since I posted some.
Am noticing more rusting on lower leaves of 3 taller plants...I think they're WW, but not sure. Their leaves are much skinnier and ridged like ruffles. Looks like begining of nute burn or some sort of nutrient lockout. Could have to do with rootboundedness [??!!] Either way, its just not digging the nutes, environ, etc, as much as the big bud...White widow is harder to grow, right?
Lateral growth is taking off, the side lighting literally producing inches per day. [not on the WW, practically none.] Over all growth loooks good. Had to take the side lighting out on account of temps. Had some major temp fluxes ajusting my 400 MH, can see evidence of it in the slight reddening of upper portions of stem.
Really want to clone...for sexing and just b/c i wanna try it.
Check the pix, 1st two from 3/7, 2nd two from 3/10

Hey Rev..your plants look good. I have the same. A bit of rust on the lower protruding stems. I also tend to get them heat stressed as I don't have such good ventilation. By the 14th of the 18th hour or so, they tend to droop and appear tired of the light and the ventilation.
I transplanted today. I will let you know tomorrow or Tuesday how they look. As we both know, this is not an easy process and I can't see having one plant that does not have some burnt leaves, yellow leaves, minor damage etc. I am still in the game and will post a pic soon.
By the way, my roots were wrapped really, really tight. They definitely needed that tranplant. Best of luck to you!

Hey rev thats looking really nice. Have you tried looking for an cheap air cooled reflector. If you can get one of those in there you'll really start to have some fun. Cool tubes are nice no doubt but just like the footprint of a larger reflector and they cool nicely, easy to set up, take up a little space though. Those plants look really healthy, don't think scrogs out of the question for the grow. Transplantings a snap if you take your time with it, can be very low stress. Plants look nice, search for justaseeds ,,, lovely ladies ,,,, if you wanna look at a nice scrog grow, its a 400, nice.
Transplanting to 5 gal buckets went great I think, now 24hrs later and no evidence of shock. I think in the past I've over watered...with cold water. This time I made sure water & soil were @ 70F. I also got more involved in the soil recipe:
To cheap soil I added vermiculite, peat, compost tea, homeade worm castings, and worms. I've had about 25 gal. worth of vermiculture going on for about 4 months now. All my veggie scrap goes in there. I was very plesantly surprised when I opened a few un and there was about 3 in. of solid casting @ the bottom. I shined a brite light on it to force worms to very bottom. I couldn't resist grabbing a handful, it felt amazing. See pic. I also pasteurized the soil.
My 3 taller, ridgier plants are experiencing some sort of toxicity I'm afraid. :weedpoke: Lower leaves are turning crispy from tips inward. When I touch'em they crumble...kinda wanna smoke em, as I've no smoke...:( Could be Mag or Zinc? I'm disappointed: they smell the most potent. I still don't know what they are for sure, but they are harder to grow! I have them separated from the others on account of the possibility of it not being a nute toxicity, but a fungal/pest thing. I've never had luck w/ flushing, it always shocked the shit outta 'em...course, water was cold & unfiltered & contained chlorine...
yea mullet- I think cool tube or otherwise air cooled lights are quickly becoming an eventuality for me, as watts & temps grows in direct proportion to plants.
Fred- Haven't checked your log for pics of transplant yet, hope it went well. Hope I find some!
Am seriously considering LSTing, cuttings, & sexing, all in preparation for>>>>:yippee:<<<<<<<< Scrog! So, both directly following and contrary to GFog's advice.
Thanks for cruising by my grow all.
...1st 2 pics are healthier, BB plants. 2nd 2 are all a different, unknown but simular strain judging from smell, appearence, and disease. [all have same condition.]
...then theres my handful of LIFE!!

Sounds great Rev! I dig the worms too.
I did my transplant and all went well, however I just don't have the space and had to put them in pots that were much smaller then I had wanted. I just didn't want to risk it any longer and could not wait till I found the sex, so hopefully they will not hate me after 7 more weeks or so.
Either case, looks like we are both on our way. Sounds odd, but I have a bit of a feel for them now. From the 6, I think 4 of them are females. This is my first grow, but it is just a hunch.
Best to you and keep up the good work!
Peace from Praha!
Been Lsting my plants. The leggier ones under the 250w mh seem to be taking well to it. Also their rusting problem cleared up after a dose of epsom salts. Their lateral growth went crazy, the canopy filled in nicely and I'm thinking of putting a screen in soom.
The bushier ones under the 400 w mh are even more bushy now, to the point that I think it might be a problem. Was thinking of switching them to an HPS, 24/7 to leg them out a bit. There are just so many branches I can barely reach in there to make any tiedowns. was also thinkin about taking off all the tiedowns and lettin them shoot up. Also might just scrog em.
The bushier ones were becoming a milky green, loosing their color between the veins on all new growth, incl. lateral...-sulphur def??-. after epsom salts now all but one are fine. The one thats still f*&(ed also has this funny drooping thing going on. want to flower soon I think.
see pics.
peace
