As bad as we all feel for the kid and his family, this mother is unfit. The extraction would have cost $80.00, and she couldn't come up with that much without Medicaid? My parents paid for our health care, no matter what. That's what parents are supposed to do.

The system needs fixing, but the mother is the one that bears the major share of responsibility for this tragedy.

You didn't even read the article.
The mother was busy dealing with her OTHER son's tooth problems.
Something also tells me that you don't know what it is like to be one of the working poor.... now, where would I get that impression?
I absolutely REFUSE, though, to get into any discussion with you, because it always puts me in a bad mood. You're such a ray of sunshine, brightening my days....

Plain and simple: She's an unfit mother.

My "working poor" qualifications do not include having a tribe of children that I can't afford.

If you wanted your day to be "brightened", why did you post that story?

the other kids tooth decay....

6 cavitys? maybe if she gave them some milk to drink insted of SODA they would be ok.......

I neven had dental Insurance till I paid for it my self......

My MOM worked 3 jobs and paid cash for my dental, an set up a payment plan for my braces..

Im Sorry for this Young man and his Family..

But it is not the fault of the state.....

That is part of the liberalism Disorder,....."all the states fault"....no personal responsability.

She could have got one of those super cheap "discount dental" plans.... free check up and cleanings. Low cost every thing else.....

If I "didn't even read the article", then how did I know that she refused to have the kid's tooth extracted because it would have cost her $80.00?

That's exactly right! There are a LOT of options. First of all, when does a dentist ever ask for money up front? They all have payment options - they would have accepted ten bucks a week as payment. Not to mention all of the other dental health programs for poor kids today, paid for by good ol' Uncle Sam.

There have always been bad parents, and you can be sure that we haven't even heard the half of the story in this case.

Not as bad, IMHO, as a parent that let's their kids' health go down so badly that they die.

My sister had to have reconstructive heart surgury in the early 1960's, due to a life-threatening condition. Back then, open heart surgery was very new, dangerous, and extremely expensive. My father worked full time, part time and at the Post Office as an "extra" to pay for this, as well as the other expenses - and he didn't get a dime from the various heart charities, medicaid, welfare, etc. There were many other medical problems, my mother died before she was forty, leaving him a widower, and he always shouldered the burden for us. There's no choice for parents. I realized this when I was younger and decided that I couldn't do it - I had a hard enough time caring for myself. Eventually, in my 40's, I got married - but we didn't have kids.

This is completely fucked... but what's even worse is i'm not really suprised. Too much of this kind of thing is happening in world. I'd have to agree with the others as well, the mother really could've done something.... it's insane that their teeth got that bad in the first place.

Its sad that insurance is expensive but a simple $2 tube of tooth paste would have avoided all this together. This is more bad parenting then anything else seeing as his brother also had bad teeth. Schools teach oral health to kids, its the parents who need to enforce good habits. And stop loading your kids up with sugers.

Absolutely Breuk!! You hit the nail on the head. My wife and I intentionally only had one kid because we want to be able to provide her with a certain standard of living. I can't tell you how disgusted I get every time I'm at the grocery store and the mother in front of me, with 5 grimy little kids, is paying with food stamps.

Kids are expensive. Period! If you are poor you don't drive a ferrari, you don't have a big house, you don't own a yacht, etc. etc. Why? Because you can't afford them. Should I feel sorry for the welfare guy who wants a new plasma tv but can't afford it? Fuck no! So why should I feel sorry for someone who has kids they can't afford?

Like others have said, the fact that the mother let the kids teeth get that bad in the first place is the key factor. This says a lot about her as a mother and a person. It's not surprising she's in the situation she is.
