View Full Version : Mold on peat Pots
I have mold on the bottom of my peat pots I have seperated the because i had them very close together I figure it is a good idea to sepertate them to allow for more air flow and to dry the mold out on the pot I dont have any on the plants yet is there a way to eliminate the mold on the pots I though about useing a very mild alcohol solution or possible a poroxide solution and spray the pots Please if any one has a solution for this get back to me as soon as possible.
Thanks a million Lozt ..

i had a similar situation, mold growing on the top of my soil. i removed the top mold layer, then sprayed some water with a little h202. now my plants are looking great and i have not seen the mold come back. goodluck

1 cup bleach to 1 gallon water.
spray or dip peat pot then set infront of fan to dry.
then let soak on plain water for 1 hour then air dry.
you should be good to go then.

if they are "Jiffy" pots or pots you plant in the ground, they might be makeing mold to naturally breakdown the walls.

SC organic has the best insight so far.
If you go to a nursery that sells tomatoes in peat pots, you can pick up the pot and see how there is mold growing on it, but the plant is healthy.
If you fear mold of any sort... dirt is not for you... go play in the water... :D
I personally ADD mold to my soil... mycorrhizal fungi...
Oh and I HATE HATE HATE peat pots, pellets, peat-based soil, etc. Peat is a serious pain in the ass to deal with. pH, water retention issues, yuck.
And gatekeeper, I don't want to be a gadfly towards you personally, but I've seen some of your advice (adding what was it, kool-aid mix or something, to your water to make the buds taste like kool -aid) seriously unless you are SURE you should be VERY careful what you post.
Bleach is a solution of 6% sodium hypochlorite... Peroxide is simply a fairly unstable molecule that quickly breaks up into nothing but water and oxygen gas (2 H2O2 -> 2H2O + O2) and leaves no residue.
Guess which one I personally would rather use on my plants?
While bleach has a place in your grow room, like sterilizing pots and cloners and the floor, and even a quick rinse (no more than 10% v/v) for suspect seeds, I keep it away from my plants.

So, did Gatekeeper777 ever provide that link about the koolaid bizz??
I'm not to concerned either way, but you really have to look beyond the screen with all methods provided on internet and in print.. you have to learn the basics to see through the methodology and mythology.
Ok, some important things to ponder about Hydrogen Peroxide.
It helps eliminate many pathogens, bacteria, mould.
Some have called it a cancer cure for deep lung cancer.
It can burn a hole in your flesh when at concentrated levels.
ALWAYS USE FOOD GRADE PEROXIDE IN ANY APPLICATION... THE
DRUG MART VERSIONS HAVE HEAVY METALS IN IT..POSSIBLY MERCURY
DEFINITE LEAD.
WHEN USING IT, DILUTE TO 3% PEROXIDE

and really, there is nothing wrong with peat pots, or peat in a mix, especially for starting seeds. When hit with the right water ratio, not sticky, and aerated properly, the germinated seed just taps root very quicky and spreads its fine root hairs so excellent. It really depends on the application, it's just the nicest method so far i have experienced for developing the root system, then the transplant to the big pot is just one step, as you know if your plant is vigorous at this point, it will be plain as you can check the edges of the peat pot with a chop stick or what have you to see if the root system is edging out , or coming to the end of soil where it meets the actual pot. you don't have to rely on that of course..the obvious indicator will be the seed pot popping out of the soil and first leaves emerging! :D One joy is seeing the process JUST before the Root goes south.. is the loop you can see with some seeds when the root tendril first rises up towards the sun, and then curves 180degrees diving back into the soil to make the anchor that will lend the kundilini energy to break the seed case out of the earth. JOYOUS. It's like of like Dune in a way!
