hi all,
Anyone else annoyed by musicians who turn to acting? I have found that most, if not all musicians who do this are horrible actors. Method Man, horrible, Snopp Dog, horrible, Jessica Simpson AWFUL, Roger Daultry (sp?) so corney and crappy! Even KISS did a movie.
I also find it unfair to the actors who struggled and went to school to become an actor.
Anyways, I just had to rant. :p

Yeah I agree with you. Most if not all are really shite, I don't mind Method Man n' Ice Cube though. But only in How High? and the Friday series.

Ice Cube isn't that bad actually. I don't mind him, expect when he did that XXX movie, now that is a great example of bad acting.

I totally agree it's unfair. It's all about the marketing, that's probably one of the biggest reason's this occurs. But...sometimes true talent does show. I actually think Method isn't too bad (I'm not talking about How High). Eminem definitely showed acting talent in 8 Mile, I don't care what anyone says...he even was praised by all the big time movie reviewers, and he's recently had a shitload of scripts to read, he's trying to pick the best one for him...but he's just a rapper with no talent, right Chowda lol. Then there's Ice Cube, but I consider him an actor rather a than musician anyway...same thing with Ice T. DMX has been in a good amount of movies, so obviously some talent there. And Tupac was a very well received actor at his time. And come on, Snoop's just the man, he can do whatever he wants.
Then, you can also say Will Smith and Mark Walhberg...and that definitely turned out for the better...two of the best actors ever right there. And after last night, you gotta add Jennifer Hudson.
So I guess....yeah it's unfair, but if the talent is there, it's there. And if not...you'll only get one shot for marketing purposes, and you can stick to your million dollar day job anyway lol.

Thanks. I wasn't trying to go against him though, I just pointed out that it can work out for the better, and gave a few examples (I forgot to put Ludacris for some reason, he's got acting talent). But, there are even more examples of it not working out.
And Chowda knows the Eminem thing was a wise-crack at a post he made before lol....I don't know how else to prove his talent as a musician overall, rapper, producer, and a little acting. Sometimes people forget all the hard work some people go threw to 'make it', (especially coming from a poverty stricken 'black' neighborhood) and just look at one piece of work they do that they don't like and say 'oh that guy sucks'. It's an opinion..yes, but should be left unsaid, as there's absolutely nothing to justify it, and plenty to oversee it. I just think people who deserve respect should get it. He's not worth $100 million because he has no talent. That's no fluke.

I think Ludacris is a pretty good actor.

Ludacris IS a good actor. That guy is going to go far with that if he wants to. And I agree that Will Smith and Marky Mark have made far better actors than they did musicians. Mos Def is also a musician-turned-actor who had done some good acting work, and I think Queen Latifah will probably win an acting Oscar one of these days if she keeps up on her current acting trajectory and doesn't overdo the comic roles. I think it's interesting when they turn out to be multi-faceted and can do both things well. Wish Jessica Simpson would stay behind a microphone, though, until she gets a lot better at acting. She's too nervous an actress and has that irritating, self-conscious head-shake she does when she's speaking her lines. I think good actors have to be fairly smart and emotionally perceptive, and I'm not sure Jessica meets those qualifications.

True, Billy. Performing is performing, isn't it? At least for some of them it certainly seems to translate over.

on the other hand you have a guy like Jared Leto (sp) the dude from requiem for a dream, whos a damn fine actor, but his band sucks soo hard. (30 seconds to mars)

Yes, Mark Waulberg (sp?) is a great actor. I caught some of his bro's work too Donny from New Kids. He's a good actor too.
I didn't care much for Eminem's work, not because of his music, but 8mile I didn't care for.
Ludacris is a fine example of bad acting in my opinion. 2 Fast 2 Furious was awful acting.
DMX, hmmm...not bad, but not great either.
Ice-T is a good actor though.
So I guess not all musicians are bad actors, but I do find it unfair that they get an acting role just because of some record sales. That's just me though.
And Eminem sucks! ;) Ha ha! Just kidding, but seriously, I don't like his music. :)

Ugh, Jennifer Lopez sucks at BOTH. Thank pot she hasn't come out with a new album lately. My ears are still hurting from Jenny On The Block.
I can't believe after Gigli people still offered her scripts.

Frank Sinatra acted in a lot of good movies including The Manchurian Candidate, and From Here To Eternity.

Francis Albert even won an acting Oscar for that role in From Here to Eternity, unless I'm mistaken. But I don't think I am.

If Eminem or 50 cent could act a part other than gangster then I'd give them some sort of credit for acting half decent. But if you act like a gangster within you music and you're sense of style and then act the exact same way in a movie, I don't think thats talent. I think talent is someone who has versatility wihtin their acting ablibites like Johnny Depp for example, then i'd say he or she is a good actor/actress

What's worse is actors turned musicians. Truly excrutiating in most cases.
Cher has done well and I think Madonna has good potential with the right script.
Jon Bon Jovi seems to do pretty well the few times that I've seen him and Ludacris did a pretty good job in "Crash".

What about...Russell Crowe, Sting, Olivia Neutron Bomb...David Bowie. Jagger...What's the guys name from Player, "song, "baby come back.
Willie Nelson, and Compant...Kris Kristofferson, and Streisand. George Strait. Wahlburg Kicks ass. wrote all the songs and did the vocals for Rockstar. That proved something to me...When he got away from hiphop...He showed his range.
Peace
I will think of some more, but these were right off the top of my head.
OH yeah...No It doesn't bother me...A lot of my friends in NYC had to act on soap operas in order to make a living while playing at night in bars.

Im not a big fan of singers turned actors or vice versa. I like it when they stick to their own genre personally. It's almost as bad as when they decide they have a political opinion. It doesn't get much worse than that.
