Hello all! Welcome to the shed-log! Going to take you through how we made our shed then continue this thread and use it as the Grow Log.

After just moving house needed somewhere new to grow. The only space available was a shed! Grr. I hate sheds. But its all we had so weâ??ve had to make the best of it. This is what we did!

As you can see in pic one it was full of stuff that took a good few days to remove. Once clean we decided to insulate the shed as best we could.

We fixed mdf on to the inside frame to make a 2inch gap going around the hole shed we then tightly filled the cavities with straw as shown below and sealed all joins with gaffer tape! We then fixed alloy sheeting to all of the walls and ceiling and sealed with gaffer tape. Then 1cm thick anti detection film was placed on the ceiling and stapled around the joints. Then we coated the ceiling with white reflective material and yet again gaffer taped around everything! We then placed a ground sheet on the floor and carpeted the hole shed. Grand designs eat your hart outâ?¦

Getting there.. :)

Now The gear we installed!

We decided to install a hydro garden grow tent with in the shed for many reasons these being a more manageable area to control and monitor and it also creates another layer of space between the tent and the roof of the shed making it less easy to detect.

We installed a parabolic reflector which for this environment is ideal. The reflector maybe broad and the lamp may be vertical but in a grow tent the light is so concentrated due to the size of the tent itâ??s the most efficient and effective reflector to use as it concentrates all light down! None escapes.

The ballast used is a 600w duel light combo meaning a metal halide bulb can be used in veg and a hps can be used in bloom in the same ballast!

We used a ruc fan as you can see. The main aim was to keep the air flowing as straight as possible so the fan pulls air efficiently. We did this by using a washing bowl on the out let so we didnâ??t have to bend the outlet pipe to a right angle and there for loose a lot of pressure!

We hooked up a environmental control unit that monitors temperature and independently controls the fan and heater! Meaning the tents always at the right temp 24/7.

We bought a cheep container from B&Q which is used for storing water. We installed a air pump with-in the container and attached a length of rubber pipe with small holes in to keep the water aerated! We then add nuts and ph up down ect.. This saves time and theres less chance of the solution being the wrong ph, ec etc..

Air intake is from a vent made from a large 2 peaces of mdf. One on the out side of the shed with the vent at the top, the other on the inside of the shed with the vent at the bottom. This stops light escaping and it stops people seeing in!

We also installed a in expensive dehumidifier to the room on a humidistat.

silly question i suppose because if it works theres know way of knowing lol

Tomthehippie
02-28-2007, 09:20 AM
arrr there is! well there’s a few ways.. ones very expensive and involves buying a thermo camera, which im not doing! however the others very easy.. its winter so there’s been loads of frosts, the room is a nice 25 inside. The forst doesn’t melt - or to be more precise it does but at the same rate as other sheds and houses around it. This proves it works.

Tomthehippie
02-28-2007, 09:23 AM
im sure the anti detection film does work but i think its the combination of the straw cavity, wooden walls, anti detection film and alloy sheeting that contribute to the hole effect.

greenman:D
02-28-2007, 02:35 PM
would a chopper with thermal imaging be able to pick up the heat coming from the extraction fan exit point being 25 inside and freezing out side?

Tomthehippie
02-28-2007, 02:49 PM
yeap! iv been tying to think of away to cool the heat down with out buying a air cooler.. i was thinking of some kind of water immersed pipe? any1 got any ideas? :)

Is the shed on a slab or have raised wooden floor? if wooden floor you might be able to run it under the shed.

its raised but then surely the heat would just bellow out the sides?

greenman:D
02-28-2007, 03:34 PM
Wouldnt be as affective as a air cooler but would disperse the heat a lot lot more evenly than shooting out the side i would think, but maybe there is some better solution i dunno man, maybe some water or gel filled pipe like you said on the market that will reduce the temps. i have same problem here but have a concrete slab floor, and havent come up with anything as yet, i get a lot of choppers around so kinda freaks me out a bit.

Amazing stuff Tom! Wow. I'm going to be watching this one!

Shovelhandle

what is your roofing material? Why I ask is that infrared imaging equipment reads the emitted temperature of surfaces. Some materials emit close to 100% of their IR radiation, other materials emit almost none! A shed with a aluminized roof would show cold even if it's actual temp was warm as it reflects the radiation of the sky (really cold, even in the summer, a clear sky reads below zero F.)

What about running an exhaust hose underground or on the ground somehow and running it away from the shed, to exhaust somewhere else. Hell, have a heat source coming out of a hole in the middle of the back yard, or whatever. Or maybe run it up to next to your outside A/C unit or something.

Just an idea. Obviously, you would have to increase the size of your fan (strength) to compensate for the added distance, but it would remove the heat away from the shed, and also allow for it to cool down while [underground].

I began to read the posts about the infrared detection and I jumped in with both feet in my mouth. (I was tokin' up, getting ready to go swimming in the pool)

I am a professional thermographer, so I can answer your questions and come up with reasonable solutions for you, If I use my fuckin' head. <G>

I'm headed out the door again so I don't have much time right now. But I'll get back to this discussion later. Meanwhile, keep in mind:

1) Thermographic cameras and detectors can be "fooled". As I said, emmisivity is the key. (a stainless or aluminaumstack and chinaman hat will show much cooler than actual temp.)
2) Hot air has no emissivity, it can not be detected with infrared sensors. Just the plastic damper/louver will appear hot.

lol Whisky! Robocop doesn't stand a chance with my door men on the scene.

The same treatment that was applied to the walls was applied to the sealing. so that straw, chipbord, alloy sheeting then a 1cm think anti detection film followed by white reflective material. Then.. not forgetting the layer of air and space between the shed and the grow tent within the shed. its the out let air thats the problem.. its like i need some kind of cooling element to go with in the outlet pipe.. :)

Tom, i'm giving you the straight shit, man. Just vent the warm air through stainless or aluminized duct with a "Chinese hat" (the a funnel shaped cap for a vent stack. The metalic duct (stack) will not show the heat as they are are not good emitters of IR radiation. The warm as is also invisible to the IR cameras as long as it isn't vented right against the side of your shed (like a dryer vent).

What's the gph on that pump Tom, and how many plants are you going to "hook up" to that, so to speak?

Tomthehippie
03-07-2007, 11:00 AM
Hey green jeans! :)

Here’s the link to the pump info. Hydroponics water pumps, timers, heaters & filters (http://www.progrow.co.uk/acatalog/air_pumps-compressors.html)

the lhr is 140 it that helps.

the tank holds about 54 liters - i just add everything the plants need nutrients etc.. as use a measuring jug to feed each plant.

Then il top up every so often making sure to check ph, ec etc.. regularly.

Every few weeks its wise to clean out the tub and not for getting to change over when ever your putting plants in to flower!

the water will always be well aerated and wont go stagnant due to the movement of the water! :)

you can use this with as many plants as you like but there more you have the more top-ups the tub will need. This method just saves time messing with small amounts of feed. theres less change of making a mistake and its easier to monitor and will be at the correct temp! :)

tom, that is indeed, the quirky blueberry trait. don't worry, the strain is a little slow to take off, but in a week or two, when feeding begins, they'll take off.

your best phenos should be the ones with a half and half leaf/flower ratio. the tight leafed pheno's are potent, but yeild nothing by comparison

just another bb tip for ya ;)

oh wait, i can use ballast heat. hey, great idea tom, i'm going to fix it up today. i'll just have to play with distance until i get the desired temp.

lol, i hear you on perfection; but with bb, perfection comes from asymetry :D

also keep in mind; blueberry is only a mediocre yeild strain. to acheive full potential, you must top at least once; i wait for ten nodes, top, wait a week, then flower.

i have loads and loads of pix, i just have to figure out what the dog did with my memory cards. topping is best for bb, though that's not the case with other strains. it's realy dependent on the plant, but greg green specifically mentions topping the blueberry. i topped many times, and compared to topped once, untopped, and scrogged. multitop yeiled almost three ounces under twenty flourecents, the rest lagged bad. averaging an ounce a plant.

i noticed they love nute in veg and halfway through veg. then they got very weird with deffs and toxicities/lockouts. everyone wanted something different. in this, the bb can be tricky in the last four weeks of flwer. so, not so much over feeding as picky for what they want, imo...

also, keep strong in mind the fact that bb's are EXTREMELY sucseptable to spider mites, more so than any plant i've ever seen. routine pest control is an absolute must.

let me try to find some pixies...

Right! my new toy! its a heat gun of sorts. Drastically cheaper then getting a thermal camera. It may not be as high teck but it does the job! It supplyâ??s the temp of any surface! just measured the out side of the shed its 1 degree higher (if that) than the ambient surface temp of a similar surface! this concludes that the insulation works :D

Excuse the muddy finger nails! been repotting all day! :)

Nice, Tom.

Two things to keep in mind.

1) the FOV (field of view). Generally, we have to get pretty close up to a target to measure it's temperature accurately. For example, if your FOV is 8:1 then You must be within 8" to measure a target "1 diameter. If you are further away, or the target is smaller than 1" they the measurement will be an average of the enlarged area.
2) Get an emisivity table so you can get an idea of what materials will emit radiation at a high enough percentage to be accurate for your purpose.

Here's a table of common materials. Note that anythin less than .60 is usually not a candidate for measuring temperature with IR. See shiney metals (polished Aluminum 0.05) This would act like a mirror and the IR thermometer would indicate the temperature of you (holding the thermometer) or some object(s) behind you.

Cheers shovel! good bit of info there that, should be made in to a faq! yea your right about the range the FOV or the D:S as they call it on this is 1:1.3 so uv gotta hold it pretty close! lol.

Not sure if u saw at the top of the thread but im using polished alloy panels on the inside of the shed! i took the measurement on the out side wall but things still have to be taken in to consideration like the sun heating the out side lol.. but all the same i think the shed is surprisingly well insulated. I did find a couple of gaps that could do with a bit of work! like around the door but im suppose that’s expected! :)

Were thinking bout hiring a thermo camera for the day just to see! Would be really interesting! :)

Hi tom, nice post and must say ya done a great job. I have been growing in my shed now for nearly 6 years and any pics i have posted have all been from the same unit. the great thing was the electricity was already connected and what we had when we moved in was a breezeblock shed of 12ft x 9ft with 1 door in the middle of the unit. basicaly what i have done is insulate it as u have done but using straw and 50mm insulation board all around then split the room into 3. 2 grow rooms and a walkway down the middle and which is used for variouse reasons. 1 is so each side can be kept air tighit as much as poss and the other is so that each side can be used alternately 12 on/off and exhaust the heat from 1 side to the other which keeps cost of heating down as even my outside temp has been -4 is then transfered to the other room to keep a reasonable temp during the winter months. on top of the walls and insulation i have then applied a ;layer of hardboard which is then layered with white black white with some anti detection foil on top of that and then mylar on the wall around that. A lot maybe but in an area where the chopper whoppers are around at least once a week i think its been worth it. a local was last week caught with 22 plants in the loft of his house as a helicopter was in search for a potential criminal spotted excessive heat coming from a house and asked for a fire engine to be sent to the property as it was on fire. as it was the police turned up as well and they checked the house any way and hey presto hes nicked. so every little precaution is nessecary no matter wat the cost.

shit fink iwas mashed when i wrote this lol il post some pics 2 moz to let u see what i av sone to mine and maybe we can help each other

cool bud - take it easy:pimp:

P.S dont know whether it has any influence but my roof which is flat is also lead lined and wonder whether this helps detction as well?

lol, sorry man! yea your not wrong. Im currently lying low for good reasons.

We kept the strongest plants and got rid of the rest. The few plants we have left are looking great! Although iv just found out the nuets iv been using have been removed from the market. So im switching to Canna Terra all the way.

On a funnier note - i opened the grow tent with-in the shed yesterday and found a red frog sitting on top of my fan heater. No idea how the hell it got in there! lol.

Il post a FEW more pics within the next week! :D

flat white has been scientifically proven to be MORE reflective than mylar.

Hey, divestoned, I think you posted that last comment in the wrong thread...but now that you mention it, you've made me very curious. Where did you find the information that you speak of (this scientific proof)? Because from everything that I've read, flat white is NOT more reflective than mylar. Got a link? Thanks, man.

I mean flat white would be the next best option down from mylar, but I've never heard that it is MORE reflective. Just want to clear it up so there is no misinformation by myself or anyone. ;) Thanks.

I think I've read that flat white paint tends to end up in the long run being more reflective because of crinkles/rips in the mylar and dirt/water that has collected on it. I saw that somewhere, divestoned and fog, But for the life of me I can't remember...maybe OG?

 Bree

So lesson learned, keep your mylar cleaned and fix it up with foil tape if it rips to keep it working top notch.

Plants seem to love that canna shit, the soil aswell, from what I've heard and seen. Are you referring to the Canna Bio Vegga, Canna Bio Flores, Canna Boost nutrients? Seems the Boost has more or less the same properties as BioBizzTopMax which is also organic bloom stimulator, supposedlly there job is the make the buds bigger and more juicy ;)

infrared can not "see through" anything. It can only read the surface temperature. If something underneath the roof or wall is making it warm then infrared will show a warm spot. Lead has nothing to do with it, sorry.

Yep only shows surface heat and this is no good to the copper chopper on hot days as usualy the extrnal temp of roofs are higher the the internal room on hot summer days but come winter time its more a problem.Last year i was the only house on the street with no snow on my roof due to temp in attic.

i know it don't see through things i know u know what i ment. that it could'nt pick up the heat past the lead. as lead don't retain heat. and is to dense to let the heat pass through it. so anyone with a brain will know what im talking about.

No problems, Palerider. The thing is, traditional home weatherization insulation methods are also the best methods for reducing heat detection by infrared, for example, fiberglass batting, foam board and vapor barriers. The other method of reducing IR detection is low emissivity materials or coatings on the exterior surfaces. Lead would not be the best material for either insulating or reducing emissivity.

However, lead is very effective at shielding RF (radio frequencies of the electro-magnetic spectrum).

i was just saying the stuff he was putting up could have it in it and im sure there are other things out there that will work as well. i myself would just build a grow room in a walk in freezer:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I worked in university in the mid 70s and the early evironmental chambers were exactly like walkin freezers with the addition of automatic watering, humidity, ventilation and light control etc.
