US generals ‘will quit’ if Bush orders Iran attack-News-World-Iraq-TimesOnline (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/iraq/article1434540.ece)
SOME of America??s most senior military commanders are prepared to resign if the White House orders a military strike against Iran, according to highly placed defence and intelligence sources.

Tension in the Gulf region has raised fears that an attack on Iran is becoming increasingly likely before President George Bush leaves office. The Sunday Times has learnt that up to five generals and admirals are willing to resign rather than approve what they consider would be a reckless attack.

??There are four or five generals and admirals we know of who would resign if Bush ordered an attack on Iran,? a source with close ties to British intelligence said. ??There is simply no stomach for it in the Pentagon, and a lot of people question whether such an attack would be effective or even possible.?

A British defence source confirmed that there were deep misgivings inside the Pentagon about a military strike. ??All the generals are perfectly clear that they don??t have the military capacity to take Iran on in any meaningful fashion. Nobody wants to do it and it would be a matter of conscience for them.

??There are enough people who feel this would be an error of judgment too far for there to be resignations.?

A generals?? revolt on such a scale would be unprecedented. ??American generals usually stay and fight until they get fired,? said a Pentagon source. Robert Gates, the defence secretary, has repeatedly warned against striking Iran and is believed to represent the view of his senior commanders.

The threat of a wave of resignations coincided with a warning by Vice-President Dick Cheney that all options, including military action, remained on the table. He was responding to a comment by Tony Blair that it would not ??be right to take military action against Iran?.

Iran ignored a United Nations deadline to suspend its uranium enrichment programme last week. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad insisted that his country ??will not withdraw from its nuclear stances even one single step?.

The International Atomic Energy Agency reported that Iran could soon produce enough enriched uranium for two nuclear bombs a year, although Tehran claims its programme is purely for civilian energy purposes.

Actually, I believe Iran has the right to nuclear energy and as far as a nuclear Bomb, The world would be much better off if everyone gave them up!

I could support airstrikes against iran (a ground invasion is lunacy) if they would actually prevent them from getting nucleur weapons. But it would only delay it, once someone knows how there's really no putting the genie back in the bottle. And when they did they would likely feel it self-defense to use it. And not without some justification.

yeah and the world would also be a better place if it rained gumdrops and food stamps. nuclear power plants are nothing more than barely controlled nuclear bombs and the waste they produce is more than just a nuisance. any responsible government would seek the alternatives of wind and solar before opening up the pandora's box of nuclear energy. the only reason for going to nuclear is for iran to position itself as a super power with nuclear weapons technology.

as for invasion:

without complete international backing, the only way that the us could invade iran is to at least entertain the nuclear option. with wars on two fronts, the us and its dwindling coalition are stretched too thin for another conventional war. air strikes can only harass and soften up a target, it takes boots on the ground to subdue an enemy and the us just doesn't have the bodies to spare.

no wonder the generals are up in arms over the possible invasion of iran. they know better than most what kind of devastation w and his buddies are willing to unleash to further their holy corporate war. instead of resigning, maybe they should consider a military coup. arresting bush and company for treason would not be totally uncalled for. ;)

Insurection, not a bad Idea. A coup in America, who would suspect that. The only way we can overthrow the government is to have the military on our side! I see some active duty soldiers are speaking out against the war, Kudos. That would have been a treasonous offense a few years ago, but congress passed a law allowing soldiers freedom of speech as long as they didn't speak against their commanders, or commander in chief, wow that must be tough, not speaking against Bush!

Iran is floating on Oil..... yeah they need power...LOL

People (states) that can have Nukes are the one that believe in Mutual assured destruction.......

If you are a dumb state that believes in Suicide bombing is the answer....you dont get nukes......

If you are calling for the genocide (jews) by your state......you dont get nukes.

if you are doing it all out of sight of the international community..... you dont get nukes.

If you want to Nuke Israel....you dont get nukes......

Oil is more valuable as gasoline in the west than as electricity in iran. I see your understanding of economics is as poor as it is of history. Put on your burkha, go hide in your panic room, and leave foreign policy to the grown-ups.

Just out of curiosity, are you Jewish? I'll go on record saying if you want to nuke anyone, you should not have nukes. Nukes are a last resort weapon. Will they be used again? (In case you forgot, the USA was the first to use them) Well, Man has a propensity to use any weapon at his disposal, so to answer my own question, Yes they will, it's only a matter of time and circumstance. The question really is when and where. When you have crazy people running governments (Dick Cheney, Ahmajinadad, the Talaban in pakistan, Oh yeah, it's only a matter of time before they take over, etc) it's pretty inevitable. I'd like to think cooler heads will prevail, but Religious fanatics see this as the armegeddon scenario and are just hoping for an excuse. Bush and Cheney are religious fanatics as are the Taliban, and Ahmajinadad. Who blinks first, my money is on Cheney, he's almost dead anyway so why not be the big player in the end game, hoooraaahhh! Lets see, we'll just use a small tactical nuke to do in Irans nuclear arsenal, that will get pakistan and India excited, Israel will double down, China will see this as a dominational threat, the French and the Brits will ramp up, and poof, all our dreams are like cheech and chongs, Up in smoke! Anyone for moving to Australia?

I too feel we should mind our own fucking businaess, when it comes to Iraq nuclear. We preach free and tell the rest of the world when they can play with their toys. Perhaps if we spent our resources helping out the sick and uneducated in this country we would be better off.

What would the good ole US of A done if other major countries had stifled our efforts to make cleaner power. Are we the only country with freedom? All muslims don't blow up people. also; My understanding of history...If we had left the Muslim nation alone back in the Crusades...We wouldn't be so hated now.

And as far as oil...some are dis-illusioned if they feel we need to burn yet more fossil fuel. Peace
