ST. PAUL - A couple from Washington state faces charges after auto workers found more than 150 pounds of marijuana in their pickup's jerry-rigged gas tank and alerted police.
The 48-year-old man and 62-year-old woman were being held in the Ramsey County jail on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance. They told investigators they were driving from Yakima, Wash., to Chicago, according to Kent Bailey, acting agent in charge of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's Twin Cities office.
"Their bad luck is their vehicle had some fuel problems and they ended up taking it into a Midas Shop," Bailey said.
He said the fuel problems might have been caused by some marijuana getting loose in the tank. Also, the tank couldn't hold much gas, so the pair might have had to fuel up every 100 miles or so.
At the auto shop on the East Side, where the couple stopped Monday, mechanic Daniel Ries noticed the truck had a modified gas tank with fresh weld marks. When the two were told the tank needed to be replaced, they were "adamant" that the repair wasn't needed, Bailey said. Eventually, they relented but insisted that the pickup's old tank be saved.
Workers, who became suspicious and called police, found that the gas tank had been converted into two compartments; one contained fuel while the other had 157 pounds of marijuana worth about $157,000, Bailey said.
Bailey credited Ries for recognizing something was suspicious. "That's exactly what we need, because we don't have enough law enforcement to cover every corner," he said. "It was absolutely sharp thinking."
Using the phone number the duo left with Midas, investigators tracked them to the Hastings Inn and arrested them. They found 700,000 Mexican pesos, equivalent to about $64,000.
The moral of the story is dont hide your weed in a gas tank and then take it to the garage.

I have my internet service thought People PC and on my homepage there is a place for strange news. I just got done reading one where this guy went to sleep in a dumpster. He woke up when the trash man came and dumped him into the trash truck and it started to compact him in there.

If I found all that weed I wouldn't grass on them (pun). However if it was a hard drug I'd have to think twice, although I'm sure I wouldn't really wanna' be fucking with Coke dealers.

If I found that weed, I'd say give me 2lbs and I won't say anything. :D
Stupid mistake though. Their truck craps out so they take it to a shop? Surely they would have known they would have found it. Oh well, stupid people make us look better. :p
Also, 157 LBS at $157,000, that's only $1,000 per LB, and police always like to break down the costs into 1/8's to make the bust seem bigger, so I'm guessing the weed is probably not the best, but still, that's a shitty loss.

I was thinking the same thing after I read the $157,000 dollars for 157 lbs. $1000 a pound, must of not been the best...That is probably why such amatuers are driving it across country.

BEST PART OF THE STORY FOLKS.... THEY LET THEM GO WITHOUT BEING CHARGED...

Couple with 150 pounds of marijuana won't face federal charges
No federal charges will be filed against a Washington state couple who were found in St. Paul with more than 150 pounds of marijuana in the gas tank of their pickup.
The man and woman were arrested but have since been released. The case has been turned over to the St. Paul Police Department, which will present its findings to Ramsey County prosecutors.
On Saturday, the couple stopped at a Midas shop when their pickup wouldn't run. A mechanic discovered the pickup had a recently modified fuel tank. A state trooper was called and found the tank held 157 pounds of marijuana -- with an estimated street value of about $157,000.
But federal authorities declined to prosecute the couple. The reason is that the federal Drug Enforcement Administration does not bring marijuana cases to the U.S. Attorney's office unless the confiscated amount is more than 500 pounds.
"I think it is unusual," Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom said, regarding a the lack of prosecution. "This is a significant quantity of marijuana that these people were caught with."
Fred Bruno, a defense attorney with experience defending drug cases in federal court, said he wasn't surprised by decision not to prosecute in federal court. He was not involved in the gas tank case.
"It's a big case by state standards but a small case by federal standards," Bruno said. "That amount would raise just about every eyebrow in the state judicial system, but maybe not many in the federal system."

That's just sad. I still find it hard to believe people get arrested for a plant they enjoy lol. But yeah that was pretty stupid to hide it in a gas tank.

They are lucky as hell to get released, but stupid as hell for bringing their truck with 157 lbs on cannabis to Midas.

oh they're still going to be charged...
it's just not going to be the feds doing it...
there is no damn way anybody's gonna get caught with over a 100 pounds of weed, then after it's spread nationally they're just going to be set free..
either that or they rolled over on whoever they were shipping it for... and the feds are now working with them to set up a huge ass bust..
keep your eyes peeled for a very large bust.
