cloning question

when should one take cuttings for cloning? how can you tell if its female or not? any help is appreciated

you can take cuttings at any time in veg. i put the plant in flower and let it show. if it's female, i take four cuttings, and make one a mom. if the pheno works out well, i flower three and keep the one. if i don't like the pheno, to the burn pile they go.
