would the best way to fit mylar be to glue it directly to the wall [if so using what glue] or would it be better to tack it to a frame? i also had a bit of an idea and was wondering if its ok to do this: make a circular reflector out of card or thin mdf cut to extend over the tops of the plant pot by a few inches. cut a hole in the middle large enough for growth and for watering, then cut a line from the middle to the outer edge so that it can be removed. then cover with white paint or mylar. would this benefit the plant or do the leaves only take in light from their upper surfaces.

Good question. I can't answer it, but I'll be watching.

Hey, sleepless. Hope you're getting some sleep. Well, I think we had this discussion sometime a couple months ago. Not sure if it had it's own thread or not, but anyway. Here is some of the conclusions we reached, to the best of my knowledge.
I would not personally glue mylar directly to a wall as that would be a pain in the ass to remove and/or clean. I believe someone had the idea of creating a square/rectangle of cardboard and gluing the mylar to that and then tacking that to the wall. You really wanna try to preserve the wall as much as possible. It also makes for easier cleaning and replacing of the mylar when needed...and quicker breakdown if that should be a necessity.
I think there was something else, but I can't think of it right now. Oh, try some spray adhesive if you are going to go the cardboard frame route.
As far as the reflective tops for your pots, that is a good idea. They are actually sold like that with the hole and the slit in the side and everything, so before you go spending all that time making them, you may want to check by a hydro store to see if you can pick some up and save time...unless you have more time and less money. :)
Those are also good for preventing mold from growing in your pot/on your rockwool, depending what you are using. It will help with reflectivity on the bottom, but is overall just a good idea, IMO.
Welcome to the boards, sleepeless.
...and HI, Mrs. G.

I didn't say they did. I just said it would be good for reflectivity. All reflectivity is better than NO reflectivity. I also said that it is good for preventing mold and stuff. Thanks for that, though, Abbatoir. :)
P.S. I liked your old avatar better.

I've heard of people making frames out of pvc piping and then attaching the mylar to those frames so that they can be removed and cleaned occasionally, plus it creates an airspace between the wallboard and the mylar preventing molding of the wallboard.
I don't have any REAL mylar, I just used some leftover wrapping paper I had around, its ghetto but it works better than unpainted wallboard...
Next grow, real mylar on pvc will be the plan.

Okay, this is how I did it:
You need myalr, duct tape, and a staple gun.
The duct tape has to be the rubbery type, not the aluminum sort.
If you are using those blankets, you HAVE to do it this way.
Okay, so first cut your mylar to fit the wall.
Now take your duct tape and tape all around the edges of the piece of mylar you are going to hang. I like to do it so that it is like a taped hem (if you sew you know what I am talking about).
Now you can staple through the duct tape in just a few spots, and it will be reinforced and not rip, and you can yank it down fast, and flip it over and rehang it if it gets too dirty.

I USE 3M ADHESIVE SPRAY. YOU CAN CUT CARDBOARD TO WALL SIZE, AND GLUE TO IT OR ATTACH DIRECTLY TO THE WALL.
I FIND IT PEELS FROM WALLS AND CELINGS VERY WELL WHEN YOU WANNA REMOVE IT, WITH LITTLE LEFT OVER RESIDUE.

think im gonna stick the mylar up using stinkyattic's method, tacking it onto a wooden frame after giving the walls a good bleaching and anti mold tratment, in fact im going to bleach the area right now. thanks all.

what i did was cut cardboard to fit the wall, then cut the mylar to the card board and you can glue it or stretch tape it on, now you can remove the walls if needed and clean them and place them back in 10min flat.

Spray adhesive and a window squeege wrapped with a towel puts mylar on wrinkle free EVERYTIME:rasta: Only use the 2 mil mylar, the 1 mil is worthless.

i dont know i think next time if i spring for mylar im gunna apply it like window tint except use 3m spray adhesive on the wall. any one ever tint a window??? this is my plan in about 4mos ill post some pics
my idea was to spray an even layer down with the 3m, tape the piece im working with to the celing and spray the side i would be lookin at with an excess of soapy water then squeege and credit card the fuck outta it till it was smooth against the wall sould be easy enuff to wipe down to clean after the glue cured but i sure as hell dont know about removing it though maybe peal it off clean the wall and repaint sure as hell wouldnt be a quick process but patchen vent holes aint either
