Bent Skovmand, a plant scientist who helped to create the ??doomsday vault,? a massively fortified cavern to safeguard three million kinds of unique crop seeds against catastrophe, died Tuesday in Kavlinge, Sweden.
I was reading the article about him here:
(new york times article, I hope this link continues to work)
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/14/science/14skovmand.html?_r=1&ref=obituaries&oref=slogin
I was interested in the section of the article that mentions storage details, and particularly that seeds stored in the doomsday fault will be wrapped in aluminum foil, as well being in cold storage, etc. Any ideas why the aluminum foil? I'm guess its either light or radiation related.
