Does anyone know anything about sarcoptic mange in dogs? Is there a treatment for it outside of the vet's office? I've been trying to find an over the counter treatment for my dog. Can anyone help?

It's scabies. It's a mite. You should be able to find a treatment at a pet store. The pet store that I used to work at carried a powder. Careful though, it is an insecticide. Pyrethrins. Same thing as in flea treatments. Go to a pet store though, not an all purpose store.

i've called the pet stores around here and they act like they don't have a clue. there is a feed store that i called that said they had something to treat it. i'm gonna check it out tonight. what sucks even worse than poor jakson getting it, is that he gave it to me and my fiance. we're currently using this permethrin ointment to get rid of it. but if we don't get rid of it on Jakson, it's probably not going to be of much use. he's a beautiful little pit puppy, but if we don't get this fixed soon, he's going to be a hairless puppy. btw, that's Jakson in my avatar picture.

there are 6 monthly treatments in a package and the vial size is an amount of one treatment for the size pet you have,,,small dog small vial big dog big vial... get the cheaper small dog one and use 2 vials... only one treatment per month... "FOLLOW THE INTRUCTIONS" don't let your dog lick it...

currently using this permethrin ointment .
Permethrin is a synthetic form of pyrethrum, just FYI... pyrethrin comes from chrysanthemums and is also an amazing pesticide for cannabis growers... so many uses! :D

i'm going to go out tonight and see if i can find that revolution... if it does kill the mites and their eggs. i know i just have to hurry before this stuff gets worse for jakson. he's got it the worst on his back legs and i've sponged him down with apple cider vinegar because i heard it helps keep the itching down. it's worked alright so far, but i need to get this cured before it becomes an even bigger problem.

Thats a horrible situation for your pup to be in, I hope the product revolution clears your dogs of eggs too, I'd say be on the look out for a second product just in case the problem comes up again from a few ill destroyed eggs hatching. Mite eggs are pretty hardy, Good luck, and let us know how it turns out, it might be helpful for future members.

Revolution should work for you if it is sarcoptic mange. HOWEVER, Mrs G mentioned that is it also scabies. That mean you can get it. And everyone in your house can get it. How sure are you that it is sarcoptic mange? The only way I know of to know for sure is to do a skin scraping and look under a microscope at the mite. Different skin problems need different meds.

i'm sure it's sarcoptic mange. and we've already caught it from the dog. well... sort of. my fiance and i have already been diagnosed with scabies. yeah, what fun. we bought a sofa and love seat from a friend of hers. the sofa and love seat had been sitting in a storage building for over a year. go figure. so the dog got it first, because he's the one that lays on the new sofa most often. we play with him all the time, so we got it from him. this whole situation is a nightmare. we started itching really really bad and getting these little red bumps all over us, then we noticed that Jakson had a bunch of them on his hind legs. now his hair is thinning back there. this has all happened in the past week. i can't afford to take Jakson to the vet, but i'm sure i know what the problem is. that's why i'm asking if there's any way to rid him of it without going to the vet. we got our medication for it, but i'm afraid it's not going to do us much good if we don't help Jakson get rid of it first. you guys are being really helpful. i appreciate it greatly. right now, i'm just helping keep the itch down so he doesn't scratch so much. hopefully i'll find a way to stop this for sure. thanks guys!

theres an old wives tale that says you can put gas on it, but its not true, so dont listen to anyone that may tell you to do this.
On tv I saw someone put gas on their dog for mange and then someone set the poor thing on fire (the dog came out all right in the end in case you're wondering).
Good luck for all 3 of you!

Wash all your linens and clothes in hot water and bleach if you can. Dry on high heat. The ointment they gave you and your girl? Slather yourself in it at bedtime, between your fingers and toes, backs of your knees and elbows, under your arms, in your groin. Scabies likes the soft skin in the joint areas. The itching is from them tunneling under your skin and laying eggs. Mmmm yummy!
Mrs. G has had her bout with scabies. I used to work in a pet store, and if someone brought a pet in with issues, sure as shootin' I would come home covered in something gross.
Oh yeah, get some spray for anything you can't launder or dryclean.

ok, so i went to a feed store earlier, because petco, petsmart, etc didn't have it and told me to look there. i found a bottle of mange treatment. the label reads as follows:
ACTIVE INGREDIENTS:
Sulfur......25.0%
Phenol.....0.3%
OTHER INGREDIENTS:
Fumed Silica, an inert suspension agent in addition to Lanolin, Petrolatum, Kerosene, Lard.
Do not use on cats, young puppies or bitches with suckling pups.
I asked the guy at the feed store just how young of a puppy they were talking about. He said the puppy should be at least 2 months old. The thing is that I don't know how old the dog is because it was found wandering the streets. I don't even know how to tell how old he is. Secondly, containing sulfur and kerosene... that just seems a bit rough on ANY dog. What do you guys think?
birdgirl73
02-16-2007, 02:47 AM
I wouldn't attempt it. That is rough medicine, and the doggie may have something other than mange. Can you take the dog to the vet or a low-cost or free clinic at your local SPCA or Humane Society? They'll know how to look at its teeth and make an educated guess about age, and they'll know whether or not he has mange and whether or not you should use that mange treatment on him or do something else. They get all sorts of skin diseases and conditions, and if you picked him up off the street, you need to make sure he/she is healthy in other ways, too.
If he looks, walks and acts like regular dog, he's past two months. Two-month old puppies of nearly all breeds are still in that sorta dopey, clumsy, pudgy, all-paws stage, very active, playful, eager to chew, and then suddenly just falling out asleep. It it's an adult female and you think she could be a nursing mother dog with pups someplace, check to see if she has very noticeable, protuberant nipples. That's how you tell if they have had a litter recently. Good luck!

i think it's pretty clear that the dog has mange. we got scabies at the same time he got all his itching and sores/hair thinning. it's a male also, so no worries there. he acts like a normal dog. walks just fine. in fact he chases me around the house and tackles my legs and tries to chew through my pants. he can run up and down the stairs and stuff like that. i guess he weighs about 10-15 lbs. ?? i just wasn't sure how the sulfur or kerosene would effect him. and as i said before, i can't currently afford the vet, so i'm looking for a way to possibly remedy this without waiting to save money for all that.
...just noticed that you mentioned free or low-cost clinics... i have ZERO dollars for a low cost clinic. i'm having to save every penny to move in a month. if there were a free one, i'd never thought of that. didn't know they existed. but even still, i don't ever have the free time to do something like that. i work ALL day most of the time. and when i'm not working, i don't have a ride.

I know the OTC stuff modeled after revolution from the pet stores doesn't have the same level of ingredients that the Rx stuff does from the vet and is less effective. But it's definitely cheaper. (Revolution is pricey as heck.)
As far as how much stock to put in a OTC product you get at the pet store, you could call the SPCA, a shelter, or even a vet's office and explain your moneyless state and ask them some questions about whether that stuff they sell in the pet stores is even worth buying. They have vet techs on staff at those places who know these answers and would also know how to tell you to treat the dog's skin condition with that medicine you already bought. If you're persuasive and persistent and ask in the right way, I expect those folks would be glad to help provide educated answers.

When my cat Swirly got out he came back scratching so I looked in to frontline... Wal * Mart at the time had Hartz... I called my sister in-law "CatPerson" and she said what ever you do DON'T use Hartz... I looked it up and sure enough there were dogs and catz with a host of problems from it seizures to death... I ended up using frontline and messed up,,,Buddy got his tongue in it and started foaming at the mouth,,,scared the crap outta me... I still got the rest of the frontline in the med cabinet,,,never used it again... all this stuff is like a systemic it gets into the skin and spreads through out... that is why you need to be extremely careful!!!

ok, so i just found a place to get revolution online. it says that it takes 4-10 business days to be delivered to the states. that seems like a long time to watch jakson go through this. and even then, i assume it will take a bit of time for it to start working. the worst part is his hind legs, and this stuff has to be applied between the shoulder blades. i want to just go ahead with the revolution, because it seems a little less harsh on the dog, but i need some way to calm him down and not scratch so much. he's getting to the point that he's whimpering all the time when he scratches now, and i've tried my best to keep him occupied so he won't do it so much. this is exhausting!

i'm not quite sure if this recipe will work mange, but it works wonders on my dog's seasonal dandruff:
1. shampoo your dog with coal tar shampoo, you can get this at any pet supply store. be sure to work into a good lather and SCRUB!
2. rinse completely, let your dog drip-dry for a few minutes
3. dilute 3 parts listerine/sea breeze/ anything antiseptic to 1 part water. work into your dogs fur, making sure it coats the skin. let stand for about a minute
4. rinse well
5. tar shampoo one more time if necessary
6. let your dog drip-dry. dont use a dryer, it will dry his skin out.

i think i'm going to need something a little stronger, bizzle. thank you for the input though.
i called the vet today and asked them about this stuff i bought. all they said was "you should really take him to a professional."
so i'm like, "well, as i told you already, i can't afford a vet... so what i'm asking you is if there will be any adverse side effects from using this stuff on my dog"
that bitch couldn't even give me a straight answer. she just said that if i didn't use it correctly, it could be very dangerous to the dog's health. NO SHIT! if i don't find something soon, i'm going to have to just cross my fingers and give it a try. i hate watching this little guy go through this shit. we plan on COMPLETELY vacuuming the ENTIRE house, furniture, stairs, carpet, tile, etc... washing ALL of our clothes in hot water, and i'm going to spray a borax/water/peroxide mixture onto the carpets tonight. i was going to treat the dog again while doing all this, as well as myself and my fiance. hopefully, that'll knock a huge dent in the mite population here. i sure fucking hope so.

I'm so thrilled you took him in! Gosh, I know that was expensive, but it was so good you did that for the animal! You're a good and caring pet-owner, On Second Thought. Hope Jackson'll be smelling back to normal tomorrow and feeling fine. At my vet's office, I always worry that my dogs'll freak, but they do fine. The vet techs are very friendly and attentive, and the dogs have other dogs and people to look at and bark at, which they really like. My impression is that animals tend to be well looked after at those places by people who like dogs and know how to interact with them. Let us know how Jackson's doing tomorrow when he gets to come home!

Time to bug-bomb your house too if you want to be REALLY thorough.
I found a good product that Raid makes that is a pyrethrin bomb. You can reoccupy the area in 4 hours. I use it on my grow actually, as well as the rest of the house since I live in a 2-family and I allow my tenants to have pets, so you can imagine the risk of fleas etc!
