View Full Version : I can't find this answer..
Up for a pre-employment test. This job fell into my lap, and had I known about it, I would have stopped smoking for a while.
Anyway..I am about 5'11 195 lbs. I have a little bit of love handles, so I could stand to lose a few.
I probably smoked about 1/4 ounce in a month, and by the time I take the test, I hope to be about 2 weeks clean.
I took a couple of at home tests without diluting or anything, and I do see a very faint line indicating negative. My question is how accurately will this match what I face at the lab? Has anyone shown a faint line and failed in the lab?
I think I would prefer dilution at first, and if it comes back as diluted, then I will consider substitution. I'm far too nervous to consider substitution right now, so it's out of the question.
I wouldn't worry much except that this job is going to double my salary, and if I put in my two weeks where I am now and fail the test for the new job, I will be totally screwed and jobless.

The rapid test that you used is not as specific or sensitive as the Gas Chromotography or Mass Spectrophotometry systems that they will use in the lab.
These instruments can easily run $100Ks+ each and can detect drugs of abuse at levels as low as 1 part per billion.
Luckily, labs will give you a cut-off level to ensure that a "positive" is truly a positive with the benefit of the doubt on your side.
I would stay clean and dilute yourself just before going in anyways. You want your piss to look as clear as water.
If you have to go in a 2nd time then you will do so several days later.
Everyone's metabolism and retention levels are going to differ. I would guess that 80% of the folks that smoke 1/4 per month will be clean after 2 weeks of quitting.
However, you should always go in well prepared.

Bingo. Couldnt agree more. Also might not hurt to take some multivitamins the day of the test.

YOU DO NOT want your piss to be clear as water. I have had to retake a test because of this. They will say that you are too diluted and they can't get an accurate result. You will need to take b12 or some multivitamins to get color to your urine.
Thanks for the info, guys. I had planned on taking some vitamin B and doing dilution.
I took another one of the CVS tests yesterday afternoon, and it came out negative.
I also ordered about 20 or 25 strips from a place online that somebody posted here. I tested the first part of my stream just now (9 days after the last time I smoked) around 6:30PM, and the line that shows negative was so faint, that I can't tell if it would even count as negative. It was so faint, that unless I knew that it was supposed to be there and really looked for it, I wouldn't have seen it. I then used a strip in plain old water just to check it out, and both lines came in pretty bold. That tells me that the line CAN come in a lot less faint.
I'll try dilution on my own next, and I will report the outcome. If dilution doesn't work at home, then I'll just go for substitution and hope that I don't get caught or have to chang clothes or something.
