I get $2500 back from my federal, but somehow I owe California $136. WTF?

Dude, I wouldn't comlain. You must have a kid or two. I owe about $600. :(
I've found when doing taxes that uncle sam really likes to rip on you if you don't have kids and actually make enough money to get by. If you've have youngens, or barely get by, then you're golden.

Married with no kids = 2 exeptions + standard deduction = screwed.
Married with a kid = 3 exemtions + bigger standard deduction + automatic 3k for each kid = Awesome.

I actually filed single, no kids, and made about $85,000.

That's not bad.
Last year I got a $1500 federal return, and owed Virginia $1600, and made half your amount.

Dauym. I haven't looked at that tax breacket in a while, but thats a sweat deal. I'll update my statement. Uncle sam rips you off if you don't make $80k a year.
Did you have someone do your taxes? Are you filing an itemized deduction or self employment or something?

i can't beleive you're complaining.. you got paid 2500.. then had to pay less than 150...
most people get bent over and fucked up the ass for hundreds or even thousands.... most people end up having to pay money at tax time....

I am getting $3500 from federal and $85 from California. What can you do? Only a few more days, I got so much to buy.

I may just be waiting until Oct 15th to file myself. Techinically we haven't got the W2 or 1099 from a guy my wife worked for Jan-Feb. She was helping open a day care center and he got in over his head and skipped town. Considering that may be self employment income that we dont have papers for, we can file a 4 month extension then another 2 month if needed.
If anythings not too crappy it's that FL has no personal tax so I'm square with the state.
