my cousin found a PS2 in the trash completely dismantled, it look like someone tried to fix it and failed and left it as is and trashed it, ive been fixing video game systems for years as a hobby and he thought it would give me something to do.
i had to reconnect almost every single wire and some were mega hard to figure out where they went as they were so small, got it all back into place and powered it up and she got power but the CD tray was stuck.
so after 20min of fiddling with the CD drive i finally got it back on its track so it opens up and closes fully, so i screw it all back together and hook it up to a TV and everything so far is going good, Sony logo comes and with the browser tray, i put in a game and nothing.......hmmmm controller doesnt respond.
take it all apart again and the wires to the controller ports was not in far enough and clipped tightly so i did that and screwed it all back together and tried again....and PRESTO everything loaded fine, controller works, memory card slots works, popped in FFX as its the only game i had (giving to me today) and played it for 30min without a hickup.
so thanks to the person who couldnt connect wires properly as i have a new toy to play with.....yes im behind the times a bit :p
only thing is missing is the piece that covers the hard drive in the rear other than that she works wonderful.

honestly is you understand how a computer or motherboard works its freaking easy to fix these things, i cant believe some fat slob makes over 20bucks a hour to fix these simple machines......chances are with a punch the CD drive tray is crushed or warped, easy fix.

I have the launch model...have had to clean the lens twice due to Disc Read Errors...but it works like new after you do that. It's pretty easy to do, but if anyone needs the procedure I think I got it saved.

this is one of the small slim ones, it doesn't actually have a disk tray.

yes this is a big PS2, they are actually built better than the slims.
i have a gamecube here that needs work, my son ran with the controller, system fell, CD spinner broke right off. so what i have to do is buy someones with a broken lazer eye and put my lazer in that one.
but i need this dumb screw driver i dont have.....bummer

Get Conflict Global Storm or any of the Conflict series.. It's a co-op fps, you'll love it even if you don't like fps games :)

I'm with you. The only shooters I ever liked on the PS2 was Gun and Red Dead Revolver. Never cared for the others. Unfortunately you may be SOL for other really good RPGs. FFx puts most others to shame. Yoiu can allways give FFx2 a go, but it almost leaves a bad taste in my mouth playing that one. Another REALLY good game would be Dragon Quest 8! If you're a fan of rpgs, you simply have to check this one out. Not quite as good as the FF series, but it entertained me. Levelling is a snap. I killed the final boss in one round.

Get the game God of War for PS2. That is a freakin awesome game! It's an adventure game where you use a combination of moves to take out your enemies. He uses these wicked blades on the end of chains that he swings around. It's a bloody, all out war of a game. You take on monsters 10x your size.
It was a fun game when I owned a PS2.

so far FFX is pretty good, last one i played was 7 and that game will forever be in my memory as the best damn game ever, the story line itself should have been made into a movie.

yeah god of war is damn good...
if you like god of war.... get prince of persia series (sands of time was the first but it wasn't quite so good, but the other two are fucking awesome.... warrior within is the 2nd, and the two thrones is the 3rd..) warrior within combined the good of both the first and second....
alot of game play, but good graphics and abilites... the first one had alot of game play, but it didn't have the graphics or the fighting capabilites of the later ones... and vice versa for the third (short game play but just fuckin awsome abilities and graphics..)
however they all share a very strong, pull you in storyline....
i forgot about those til chowder mentioned god of war (god of war is a must have for anyone with a ps2, i think it's 20 bucks now... but i bought it back when it was 50.. i've been waiting since just a month or so after the release for the 2nd one, which is due in march.. and i can't fucking wait for it...)
you also might really like shadow of the collosus.. i never ended up finishing, i sold it before i could... it only has 16 enemies.. but these are huge ass fucking enemies.. and a fight can take a good half hour.... and that's if you do everything right... you have to figure out how to take them down, then you have to do it... they are collosal creatures.. and the story line is almost tear jerking.. while the graphics are something you'd only expect to see on ps3/360... i put in hours of game play on that game and only got to enemy 9... i won't ruin the story for you, it's only 20 bucks (this one i know for a fact) and if you're not a FPS type of gamer, then this is the perfect game for you, just trust me on it and get it.

dont feel like your a little behind the times,,, ps2's rock,, by the way a have a broken one, bought a new one from my friend for 40bucks, happy about that, but i still have the old one, when i turn it on, nothing come on the screen, and disks wont read, but im guessing it need a new laser block.
Did this guy attempt to mod it? Take it apart and check the mobo. There's prolly just a bridged connection somewhere that can be cleaned up with a desoldering braid. Unless they burnt up one of the bios connections, you may be fine.
DREs are common with the ps2 and can be fixed by calibrating the laser.

Hey could you post it up? I been getting DREs with my original PS2 for awhile now, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't
