It looks just like that, only ceramic, and is pretty old.

I remember a thread where a guy posted a DIY on how to wire them up, a bunch of them, and then wire the group to the power cord of just any old house appliance.

Can anyone point me in that direction? Thanks, in advance.

Looks like a std. 2-wire socket. There should be screws on the back for the terminals. Just connect a two-pronged extension cord/wire to the terminals. (Use a three pronged cord/wire if there is a green screw terminal, as the green is the ground) As long as the ground is right (if there is one) it won't matter which wire you put to which terminal, it'll light the lamp

Hmmm, so how would I connect one lampholder to each other, so that I can use one cord to power maybe two or three of them?

I've seen that done, but I don't know where I get the wire to connect them. Thanks.

How to Wire a Circuit "In Parallel" (http://www.berkeleypoint.com/learning/parallel_circuit.html)

There are diagrams of wiring in series and parallel - You would use parallel wiring, since if you wire in series, if one light goes out the rest of them go out.

STD 16 or 14 AWG lamp cord from any home depot, old extension cords, etc etc will be sufficient to wire them if you are only doing 3 or 4 - if more then maybe a slightly higher gauge

Proper wiring is a safety factor.
On the "shell" of the lampholder is the "grounded" wire or Neutral. On 115 volt circuits this would be the white wire. On a polarized plug this would be the broader (fatter) prong of the two (look closely, usually one prong is slightly broader). Lamp cord is also polarized, the "grounded" wire is the "identified" wire. It will have ridges on the outside of the insulation.
The "hot" wire on the cord will be smooth. It wires to the center contact in the lampholder. On the plug it wires to the thinned prong.

Any questions?

Uhhhm..

http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/7255/1003205ka9.jpg

K I got that.

Now, I don't know where the ground would be on that, but each of the screws are accompanied by a letter, "N" and "L".

Now, one wire of the power cord, does seem to have three groves put into the insulation, while the other looks to be smooth.

And the underside of the smooth wire has a bunch of what looks like factory imprinting/writing.

What can I do to keep those wires from coming into contact with skin or housing material, tape?

Tokudai

(N)eutral and (L)ive/(L)ine most likely is what the letters designate. The (L) goes to the center of the light socket?

The lettering on the wire helps you to keep the two strands identified for the whole length of cord

You should mount it to a piece of wood or something to "hide" the screws so you can't touch them. Tape could work, but wouldn't be as safe - I'd prefer to have it mounted

Hmmmmmmmmm.

Ok, I think I might have made a series circuit but I'm not sure.

I tried to replicate the parallel circuit as best as I could.

I figured the batter would've been the power cord coming from the wall, and that Neutral could pass for the positive.

I connected the cord from the wall to the N on the fixture, and then using another type of cord, this time silver, instead of copper, connected that connection on the fixture to the same type of connection on the next fixture.

I did the same for the "L" or negative cord, and then plugged up in a they lit up.

So I guess I'm happy, but tell me if I did anything wrong. Also, could you recommend a method for hanging them? I currently just put two twist hooks into the plank of wood, and then hung that from a clothes bar in the closet using an old length of wire, pretty ghetto but it works for now.

ImageShack - Hosting :: 1003212wh3.jpg (http://img101.imageshack.us/my.php?image=1003212wh3.jpg)

I want to put another fixture on that plank to get a total of three CFL's to it, and then maybe build another one when I have the materials, also, are the fixtures pretty cheap? I heard somewhere between 50 cents and 2 dollars.

Thanks.

Just an update:

http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/3460/1003216ur5.jpg

I've moved both CFL's directly to this plant as the other one seems to be dying.

Does it look like a healthy improvement? More water? When should I start fertilizing? Thanks.

^^^If this is what you did then it sounds like a parallel circuit - try unscrewing the bulb closest to the plug/wall socket and see if the other one lights. If not, then its series

^^ Looks a little ghetto, but it works! As you find a better way to mount them, maybe inside a box and build a reflector, then adjust it, but as long as theres no bare wires visible and its sturdy/strong enough on the hooks then your good to go

^^Yeah somewhere around there - I got a 4-socket replacement fixture for a ceiling fan at Walmart and it was 3.95 or so

Thanks.

Your plant looks healthy - a little stretched but no problems. Put a little more dirt up around the stem another 1/2 inch or so. Keep the light as close as you can without burning it. Don't even think about fertilizing it until those 2 little round leaves have yellowed and started to die

Good Luck and post up if ya have any other q's!

Yes, it lights, so parallel, thank you. :]

Looks a little ghetto, but it works!

Yea, I think it will be like that forever :O, I want to order some mylar online and kind of drape it over the clothes bar on top of the closet, and then down the walls, and then extend it out over the door opening a bit, and then close that end off with another sheet at 90 degrees to make a small enclosure.

It will take a while to work out how to vent properly, but for now, I'm just going to get the plant grown, no matter the results, I need experience if I want to continue in the future, under better circumstances.

^^Yeah somewhere around there - I got a 4-socket replacement fixture for a ceiling fan at Walmart and it was 3.95 or so

Hmm, that sounds great, I could definitely switch it up a bit and use different pieces of scrap wood from the garage to make something more definite.

What kind of design would you suggest, for what I'm trying to do? That corner of the closet is pretty much my area, I think it's about 5 feet up, almost 2 feet wide and about 4 feet lengthwise in the closet.

If worst comes to worst, and I end up in the troubled situation of not being able to vent properly, I will just cover the light leaks on the door itself, and use the remaining space in the entire closet to grow.

Thanks, again.

I used cardboard from an old beer case, 1/2 a mylar emergency blanket and some tape to make this "reflector". Most expensive part was the 6500K/daylight bulbs, and they were $9 for 4

See if maybe you can find a refrigerator box or washer/dryer box or something, they make great cheap little veg rooms for cfls and you can even rig up two "rooms" in the closet. Be creative too - I once grew a decent plant simply leaning a 4 foot light fixture into a corner.

I'm glad this thread could help more than just my-self, I've been looking for help on this subject for so long, knowing I would end up making some kind of homemade CFL circuit, just not knowing how. I'm definitely going to head out to the store sometime soon, probably tomorrow and pick up a bunch of the "lampholders", and a load of CFL's, and then get to work making some many CFL holding piece of work.

What kind of bulbs should I pick up?

Sorry, these are pretty much the noobest questions I could ask, but..

Should I get warm bulbs for veg? 23w CFLs, or 42? I think the 42 watt CFL's equal 100 watts of incandescent light, that's in lumen output and not efficiency right?

Anyway.

Here's an update.

There's a little brown/dead spot that formed on the end of the first set of real leaves about two days ago, I think it was from the heat, so I put plant under the fluoros, it seems to have regained a lot of dark green color, instead of being yellow, and the brown seemed to have stopped. Was that what it was and did I fix it? :? Thanks.

I just put the lights like this, I still haven't gotten around to getting bulbs for the other Fluoroscent fixture, or the other CFL's and lampholders yet, I'm wondering whether it would be a better decision getting those longer style grow CFL's, than the regular spirals, though.

Bring those suckers closer, in a few days.... You can be 1-2 inchs, away from your plant, as long as its not too hot, just put your hand inbetween your plant and your bulb, if you cant stand it for a min, its too close.

Ok, so I made it out to the store with minimal funds :/, I'm still waiting on a few people to pay me back from a few sales I made.

So I picked up two more bulbs for the fluoros, randomly just grabbed some which are different spectrums from the first ones I have, accidently.

Can anyone point out any mistakes? Distance from light, position, spectrum, watt (i think i have 34 and 40), soil, bucket?

Now.

Would this work?

For when it starts to get big, instead of having it spread out and become thin and stringy, but to turn the fluoros vertical, to side light it, and then to just get around and build that monstrous CFL holding device?

Would that be worth it?

Light look fine, on distance, as long as you can put your hand at the height of your plant and hold it there, for a while, and not burn yourself you are good. Couple days ago someone posted what spectrums were for what, search the forum, it does return a good result!

I was planning on turning the top shelf of my closet into a Vegging compartment for the plant like this, when in the future I will be doing a full "real" grow with more than one plant, and all the supplies.

And then just use the rest, the whole bottom, for flowering.

That might be interesting, :], I wonder how much I could yield in a space like that with enough ..CFL's?

A little bit bigger. I can't believe the smell I'm getting, sheesh.

I'm going to start thinking about planting some more seeds, and then getting the supplies ready for CFL vegging and flowering, once it gets too big for the Fluoros.

Question:

Will it become a she/he from the stress of the LSTing I'm doing? I wouldn't really mind, I mean I wouldn't toss it, but every seed I would get would also be a she/he too, right? That's just what I heard.

Also. When I end up getting enough CFL's and supplies etc,(sheehs, when it stops snowing/icing) for something like what KDspecial or any of the other CFL growers around have, what should I do with the two fluoro fixtures I have? Side light, bottom?

Does this look like normal growth speed? I have gotten the miracle grow soil, and then later, for moving to bigger pottage, I got some regular crappy soil and they both said they have fert in them. Should I wait for about a month until fertilizing? Or just maybe 2-4 more weeks?

Thanks, all that have replied so far.

Edit: And the one pic is from right before I just tightened the one tie down.

Yeah, you'll find if you don't pretend to be a female, or call someone out in a thread title, then you hardly get any input or responses from people :(

Wal-mart has the fan light attachment, near the fans. I think me and the other guy are using the exact same piece. My Wal Mart doesnt carry any fan stuff in the winter, so they won't be stocked here for a couple of months. Since its cold by you, you may find problems locating a fan too. But I love teh snow!#%$!

Your plant looks nice and healthy. Kind of a big container for its size, but it'll be ok, just tough to regulate watering. Keep the temps where you are at and don't overwater/overfeed it and she (hopefully!) will treat ya good

Ok, thanks for the help.

I've got some good news and some bad news if you may have been following my situation.

I may not need anything other than what I have now for lighting because a friend came over and looked at the grow and decided he could give me his (presumably old) 125watt HPS.

I might still pick up a few CFL's to add around the bud sites or just for helping even out the light, but with that I would have a problem.

The heat from the HPS is pretty intense for a small room like this, I've grown with them before and they were harsh on the plants in even remotely small places.

So fan will be needed, I'm not running one yet, and not really treating this grow as anything special, I'm actually hoping to buy some seeds online to really grow some stuff worth the trouble. Yet, if I get this light, and even without, I will need a fan. With the light, I'm likely to need a good fan for exhaust or intake, a good fan aimed directly at the planets, maybe rotating, and a good way to get the hot air out of the closet.

I can't imagine what to do other than to drill through the closet door. I have reflective sheeting to put up, but I'm not sure whether I should pretty much tape and seal off the whole closet where the walls go in, not even touching the door, but closing that and everything off entirely, as in, a wall of plastic/sheet material, with tape.

I would make a way to get in and out easily.

But I'm running a stealth grow and I need it to be relatively quiet. It can be relatively noisy in my room, because this computer is old and loud, but I definitely do not want to hear the wall vibrating walking up and down the hallway, that is directly outside or the same wall as, the back of the closet.

Someone suggested either cardboard layering, or finding (somehow) a bunch of old school plastic lunch trays, to mimic what they do when trying to build a homemade recording studio.

I would think to use rubber protectors and methods for grounding firmly, and dampening or insulating the noise at the connections to the wall. Would vibrations sound through just hanging on some wires?

Thanks for the reply.

Well, I might have to return those big beautiful 12'' pots I bought the other day, well, not return, but replace with some 5 gallon pots like I have taken pictures of. They fit up top for veg, but I don't know how I would seal that off, because their top edges stick out over the edge of the shelf, and I would have to black/white poly the bottom of the shelf to the ceiling of the closet, to make it light proof so that I could veg 24/7 there, and flower below.

I'll do an update soon. But all I can say is that I have a 125w, and a 400w HPS on the way.

I've fed for 1 watering so far.

The one plant's grown a bunch, but has had many leaves cut up from rough handling and moving around so much, lst is untied for now, don't know when to flower, will get pics up tomorrow or the next day after some things arrive in the mail. Thanks to all who have helped, I need to start looking for a fan and a way to suck air out of the closet if I'm going to look to set up those HPS's though.

Feel free to critique anything, not much attention so far, so maybe as things start to improve (i need a fan! got the light! :]) people will take notice.

First, the seedlings and veg area up top the closet, which will be closed off, vented, and only used for 24/7 COOL fluoro lighting for the seedlings or clones, have one clone in there right now, and many seedlings, I will take pictures of the insides of the pots later.

Here's how I have the cord going in between the carpet and the wall, coming out of the closet so that with proper light proofing(which I will do when the black+white poly gets here) there will be no reason for suspicion or even upon close inspection, signs of activity, but let's hope there's never any need for that.

Here's the whole thing: http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t100/highmai/Plant/100_3350.jpg

Sheesh:

http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t100/highmai/Plant/100_3368.jpg

I need that plastic sheeting soon! So I can sleep at night!

Thanks for the help so far, it's been wonderful, now for the future.

My plans are to take a zig zaw and cut a square or circle out of the wall to the left of the doors, going into the closet.

And then to hook up some vent tubing (robot arms) to hang right next to the bulb, and attach an inline fan to the end of the tube, that will be outside of the closet, through the wall. Then attach a scrubber to that if necessary.

But use this to primarily suck the heat right out of the closet from the light. I currently have the ballast sitting outside of the doors, with the cables going underneath. IF I have trouble working with this, as I'm sheeting up the whole opening with plastic, then I may have to put it inside and maybe even split that tubing so that I can also suck the heat off of the box, which acts like a heater, a literal room heater, or if I can, I'd just leave it out to maintain heat better. Those cables are perfect.

For the plants. I may have to sound proof the wall later, and take that mylar down and put new kind up. But I may buy some actual roll mylar online, so that it is smooth and neat, because I think they may be best for the plants and reflectivity, correct me if I'm wrong. But if the sound isn't too much, I wanted to get a regular oscillating desk fan, to sit right in there constantly blowing in the closet. Which would be a nice NICE treat for the plants, since they've been getting heated all grow (well, the one that's been there).

Thanks for all the help, just ask or point anything out if you know something I don't.

No plants are ugly - its you :P - I told you, you didn't pretend to be a female. Funny, we registered within a week of each other - I guess we gotta stick together!

You want the lights as close as you can without burning them. CFL cooltube is kind of overkill, no need for that kind of cooling with cfls. My cfls are within 2 inches of my plants. Now if shes under that 400W HPS, its a whole different game. 400W in that cab s going to be tough without some serious cooling...

Only trim the leaves that are damaged/dead - I wouldn't trim any of those just yet. I dunno if thats heat stress per se, but definitely something made those top leaves unhappy. Looks like something is eating them kind of.

Shes gaining in size nicely, so whatevers going on can't be TOO too bad ya know?

Have you fed them yet? Any bug problems in the house? get a no-pest strip and throw it in the cabinet when you can, help eliminate the bugs (if there are any).

Dunno what to say man, its so hard without seeing 'em sometimes. What kind of ambient temperatures are you getting inside the cabinet - there are 2 temps you should be concerned about. With the thermometer in the direct light, it can get as high as 100+ and be ok, but in the shade in the cab, it should be below 80. Check your temps and lets see if we can get this baby on track

Thanks for replying.

I think the damage to those leaves was from me not knowing how to LST correctly.

It's doubled over mind you, so it's at about half the height that it would be at if it were directly up.

The temps are in the 90's all over the cab. Tomorrow me and my buddy will be drilling through the wall, as soon as we make sure there are no wires in the way.

Hopefully that will help with the heat, although I can't seem to do a damn thing about the light!

EVERYONE tells me, mylar and/or black/white poly works wonders!

Oh yea? My closet still glows with two sheets of black and white polyester in the way!

I don't know what to do, I'm trying to get some sleep at night!

Well first things first put your lights on 18/6 and get at least 6 hours sleep :P

OK so its in a closet right - not another cabinet inside the closet?

If you are using the whole closet, do you store other stuff in there? Or is it 100% a "grow area". Light leaks you have to fix - they may compromise the darkness you need to flower and let light in as well. That heavy duty black polyvinyl weatherstripping should work to block the light from the door, but you need to vent.

Lemme know the closet situation, if it is a 100% grow area, and what the dimensions are. If not, then you will have to build/install a cabinet inside the closet - what dimensions do you have to grow in?

ate
03-16-2007, 04:39 AM
Yea, it's just a plain old closet that I cleaned out so I really put to use.

Annnnnd, I'm setting the timer so that it rests for 6 hours during the night. Thanks :D .

100% Grow area, but there are some ferts and bottles in there that I could move around if I wanted to.

I think it's about 72 inches long, and 23 inches deep, with about 64 inches until you get to the vegging shelf and about 32 inches up after that.

So.. 6 foot length, almost 2 foot depth, 5 feet of flowering room after the pots, and a little more than 2 feet of vegging room.

I got you on the vent, yesterday me and my bud drilled through the dry wall, on the *right* side of the closet, in that short little piece of wall that meets the corner. I have 11 small computer fans coming, I'll see how that works, I feel I will need one of those inline fans, though.

The scent was pretty bad when we were working through all day though, you could smell the little guy coming through the front door of the house.

But I have an ionic breeze in there now and it's much more closed up, so it's nothing.

Sadly.

Me and my friend were idiots when we mixed the soil for the seedlings in those giant potters, we used handfuls of blood meal and now they're all turning yellow and falling over.

I've already diluted one pot full of soil with some leftover soil in the garage, I guess I will just have to buy another bag though, and start all over again with those seedlings.

But...those are all bagseeds...mid grade bagseeds, I'm not really into that kind of bud if you know what I mean..I get the seeds from my friends, and I've really been wanting to order some online...so what I think I will do is wait until all the plants up top die naturally, seeing as the soil is just too rich for them, except for that one I just dropped in the soil today, which might just be a small loss, and then start flowering the one below with the 400w hps.

I'm not leaving that thing on for any extended amounts of time though, until I get the fans, because the thing gets so hot heat leaks out into my room and I can feel it.

So yea.

What I wanted to ask you though, how would I order seeds?

Can I use my credit card? Or ..is that a big no no?

I heard about some seed vendor leaving all his buyers records in his house, and then getting busted (READ: government funded terrorists descended upon his house with guns to take his stuff and ruin his life...:[), so I definitely don't want to risk that, but it makes me think that people just buy with credit cards.

I've ordered MOM before, and so I know how to be stealthy and go through money orders or debit cards and what not, but I just wanted to make sure by running it by you or anyone who answers this.

So, that's what I'm working with, and thanks for your help.

Hmm.. Do you rent or own? How long are you planning to stay there? Punching holes in drywall is cake, and can be easily and cheaply fixed.

The accordian door is a pain.. Personally, I'd remove them and get a standard pre-hung (w/jambs) door for that size opening fairly cheap. This makes it easy to seal and will eliminate your light leaks - plus you can put a lock on it if you want. If you rent, I bet the owner would hardly notice if you left it there when leaving, and if he did, put the old doors back on...

OK so then - 72 x 23 x 86 - are you trying to set it up so there is a veg room and a bloom room in the same closet? (ie do you want to veg your next crop while the current one is flowering to eliminate down time between harvests) Or just one crop at a time, all the way through the process? Is that door "in the middle" of a 72" wall, with equal spaces to the right and left of it?

I can almost guarantee you will need an inline fan, those computer fans are going to piss you off, you'll try and try and try with them, but wind up changing everything around for the inline fan. <----Ask me how I know :)Since smell is an issue then you will definitely need the inline fan or something similar, to work with a scrubber and maximize your ventilation/cooling...

I wouldn't use my personal credit card to order seeds, but you can goto a check cashing or money order place and buy a "prepaid" visa or mastercard with cash, and not need to give any ID. Postal money orders are almost always accepted by vendors as well. I'd recommend shipping them to a friends house, or other location where you are not growing, and put a company name or other name for the shipping address ( ABC designs. attn: Steve, c/o 123 main street etc etc) the post office/courier will still deliver due to the C/O in the address, but it "distances" the receiver somewhat. Make sure delivery does NOT require a signature - NO EXCEPTIONS

Keep in mind that to you CANNOT (repeat CANNOT) get in trouble for something illegal being mailed to you. You have no control over what people send to you, in your name or not. They would need to prove you ordered it (which is impossible since you didn't use a traceable payment method). This is not to say that the address you use wouldn't get "flagged" or something (say they recognized the sender or something, lying in wait til you sprout/grow), to check up on you in say, 60 days or so.. Which is why you use a friends address who is not growing.

Anyways lemme know your goals as for growing schedule - perpetual veg/bloom or one at a time - and I'll whip something up for ya!

I own, but I just put those doors in. D: I don't know if I want to go through the hassle to change those. And yes, those doors are in the middle of the wall, with relatively the same amount of space on each end.

I'm working on the 6 inch inline fan, would a 250cfm work with a small scrubber?

I definitely wanted to do a cycle grow with a constant veg and bloom. I don't know about it now though, I'm thinking I'll have to get the exact measurements of that interior and then head out to lowes or somewhere to get a piece of ply wood cut, to use as a lightproof shelf, but even then, I'm going to have to seal that area between the interior shelf and those doors. Hmm, I'd need some weatherstripping for the edge of that shelf, methinks.

Thanks a bunch on all that help, and especially for giving me the idea of sending the seeds to a friends house, I couldn't imagine what I could've been thinking it planning on sending them here.

Thanks again!

Edit: I've checked out most of your grows, you seem to know what you're doing! :D

Hey no problem man - nothing worse than getting things setup how you think they'll work, and having to redo the entire plan. And thanks for the compliments on my grows! Too bad your not local, (or are you?) I could save ya that seed hassle!

To block the light, you can goto a fabric store and get whats called a black-out shade. Its got plastic on one side, used for blocking light behind draperies Get a piece big enough to cover the entire door opening, then hang it inside the closet covering the door - you'll need to "part a curtain" of sorts to get into the room, but as long as the shade is larger than the door frame you should be able to get rid of the light leaks on that accordian door.

Having the veg and bloomroom in the same closet, I forsee problems. First of all, the larger area should be the bloom room, since plants stretch and grow so much during the bloom stage. Therefore you'd have to contain the grow area inside the closet, to one side. This could work, with 2 correct size pieces of plywood, and some creative hinging, but you will not be able to work in the veg room when the bloom lights are out, and it will be tough to ventilate. Plus the veg room will have lights on when the bloom room doesnt - and any light leaks can screw up the flower cycle. But if the veg box is sealed well I bet you could pull it off.

You'll have the same type of problem with an over/under system as well - problems to vent and the possibility of the veg light leaking - plus not being able to work on the veggers except during the bloom light cycle. You'd need to open the accordian door, and basically, have 2 more doors right behind it - one high one low. This still leaves a venting problem for the bottom chamber, and how do you utilize the entire top area?I'm short, I could never reach..

The only way I would feel comfortable doing it like that is to try the first method, with a veg box inside the closet, and the rest of the space the bloomroom.

Hmmmm, interesting.

I'm in US.

I realize all those problems with the vegging and blooming at once...

I was planning on cutting the top and bottom in half, by carefully measuring where that top shelf is at, and then installing (by means of dropping right in) a perfectly cut piece of ply wood. To create the light seal.

And then drop black and white poly both down from the ceiling onto the shelf, to block out the veg box.

And then down from the shelf to the floor, to block out the bloom room.

I've got that one plant on flowering as of tonight, hopefully it will be a she, if not, I'll wait for good seeds, AND work on the grow room BEFORE I start growing! XD

Ahh the power of our evolved ability to anticipate scenarios, what a gift!

I figure I will save a lot of heartache or headache by slowing my whole operation down right now, and working on what I need to get sleep at night, and make things a little easier in the long run!

The lights turn on/off at 8 and in a few days I'll get that inline fan, and keep the HPS on to veg, along with all those smaller computer fans blowing directly on the plant, which should make it(her!!!) happy(ier).

I'm thinking about your idea with the veg box inside, although I don't know how much that would fit, unless I built it, pulled the shelf out, and then had someone hold the thing up there while I angled and slid the shelf back in and set it the box down on top of it, sitting in the upper portion of the closet.

It might work, if I could only get smaller pots for vegging.

Silly old me likes to be stubborn though, and resist change. :microwave:

If I decide not to build an interior veg box, to house the fluoro, and the plants, on top of the closet.

Then I will probably think about that black out curtain.

I looked at that and turned away when I saw the prices, and figured I'd just end up buying something that doesn't work, I already have one paypal dispute going for that polyester as the seller guaranteed me that it would not let any light through.

So I might think about that curtain, right now it's not too big of a deal, I can sleep only a little glow comes through with the CFL's, mind you that's soft, a hot bright orange, and yet tiny, glow comes through the cracks with the polyester in place, with the HPS on.

If I could get that curtain, and literally hang it just like a curtain, and open and close it just like one, I feel that it would make entering the closet to move things around and tend, so much easier and less of a hassle than pull a big stubborn plastic curtain above my head each time.

The light cycle for bloom is currently in the day, so I'm pretty much fine with working on that then, as long as no irregularities arise and need immediate care during a dark cycle.

The polyester blocks light coming into the closet during the dark cycle so I may be good with that.

I may just end up doing a single cycle grow at a time, and waiting to move to a room, that I can cut in half with dry wall or plywood, to work on a more extensive grow.

Thanks for all the help, I'm stuck now in deciding where I will go from here, basically, it's all up to the little plant in there now, if it's a she, I will continue, if not, me thinks I will have some rethinking to do until I order those seeds, in order to make up for, and realize the value of all the blocks I've run into as of now. I believe I will fix all those before I continue growing. In the end though, if nothing works for the light leaks and separation problem, then I will just do a single grow at a time.

Thanks!

Where in the US? I'm in Washington..

For a veg room in there - with plywood, wall off , say, the right side, right at the door to 36" high - then all you need is a piece of plywood for the ceiling and then like 4 36" 2x4s or some wall toggles/brackets for the corners. You'll need to cut an access door, or hinge the side farthest against the wall, so it swings open to get in there. Easy to seal and light proof with some caulking from the inside, since you are using 3 existing walls, and there'll be thick 2x4s at the corners/edges

Use some cfls in the veg box, and either vent it to the bedroom by knocking through the drywall (did you already do this?), or, since the cfls wont generate much heat, if you zig zag/light proof the vents, you can vent the veg box into the whole bloom area. You can make the "box" to the right as tall as you want - say 36 or 40 inches or so.. the roof can be a shelf for your nutes and ballast and such, and you have the whole left side (2/3s) of the closet to bloom in.... This still only allows you to access the veg chamber during bloom cycle on though, and that veg box MUST be light tight when its on and the bloomroom is dark..

Ideally you could use a whole 'nother closet or space, or a small cabinet inside the bedroom, outside the closet. Just watch out because it can take over.. OK now just a little clone room/box.. Wait, I need a place to store my mothers...and another for the fathers....? What if I want to breed, now I need a breeding room... :)

Ok, ignore the stupid post.

I'm in the east coast.

Yes, I knocked through the drywall already.

I like your plan. It's making me think. But ...the added working is making me sweat just reading. I was using one 4 foot cool fluoro for veg before, and that's how I got my plant all bushy at the beginning, and it seemed to work fine. I wish this wasn't so hard! Arrg.

I would have to get permanent smaller pots for the veg box. And grow about 4 plants in there at once. With ..hmm..maybe just a bunch of ...:] "lampholders" drilled into the ceiling, and dual bulb fixtures and then a bunch of CFL's.

One or two fans with a good vent coming out, maybe with a couple elbow PVC pipes facing the wall and painted black on the inside.

Hahahahahahah. Yea I Could see how I could continue expanding. But I don't think the people I'm living with would want that. Eventually I'm just going to take out a room, for the whole thing, seal it off from the rest of the house and just put it to work. Nothing too big, but nothing too small either.

Funny what you said about finding another space for blooming or vegging.

I have this dresser. It's pretty big, I could probably fit 4, 5 gallon pots in there, and do a small SOG.

But the hell with that, in anything I"ll veg the tiny bastards in there, and then load all the clothes that are in it, into the top of my closet, and then bloom them as huge as the closet will allow, while rotating another few babies into the dresser for vegging.

That sounds nice, and it would be almost the same amount of work as building a box for the closet. I'll have to think about this.

Just to re-cap.

Right now there's four huge 12'' potters from home depot sitting on that top shelf, with a 4 foot fluoro hanging over them, and turned OFF.

On the bottom there's the single 5 gallon adolescent currently in bloom, waiting to show sex. Right now, because of the heat, I only have a couple CFL's on the plant, in a few when I get the inline, I'll probably start flowering with the HPS, and hopefully this one will be female, just so I can get a little taste, even if it's mid-grade.

The light is partially blocked out. And for that I'm thinking either leave it alone, and just live with the tiny light leaks that are coming out (i keep all the light OUT, I just can't keep it IN) or buy a black out curtain, but I'm not sure that's going to work.

Will it work better than the black and white poly? Because that was supposed to be light proof, but it failed.

Aside from the light, I may build a box inside of the cabinet. A small one for about 4 small pots, and vegging plants, with a ceiling made of CFL's, sides coated in mylar, and a few small fans inside, with one small fan and a few elbow pipes exhausting and working to keep the light contained.

That might be nice, but I've never built anything in my life, aside from a few skate boxes/grinds from about 5-6 years ago.

On the other hand. I have this. http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/21/1003413am8.jpg

Which is about 33 inches across and about 35 inches tall, so tell me...do you think that would make a good veg container once vented and lights installed?

I could cut the insides out, all the drawers, but leave that whole face on, and just turn that into a door, or simply take out the back or one of the other sides or anything like that.

Too much work for something simple?

Once again, thanks for the advice/help, it's been excellent so far. :hippy:

Hard to tell - looking female, but you should know any time now, it'll spit two hairs out

heres what I meant with the box inside the cab - it'd be super easy with 4 36 inch 2x4s, 2 hinges, and two pieces of plywood (one of them 36x23 ish) - less than 10$ I bet, plus a couple of bucks for a latch and weatherstripping to seal it, couple of black elbows, etc etc. That veg space would be 3 ft tall, 23 inches deep, and whatever the distance is to that right wall - roughly 2 feet? And would leave plenty of room to bloom in to the right. You could veg 4-6 plants in there pretty easily, although you are right, the 4-footer would not fit. You'd need to get some cfls and fixtures.

That dresser would work too - check its size though, it might be easier to build the enclosure

Anyways, happy to help ya out whenever I can - Hope shes a femme for ya and I'll keep checking in!

03-19-2007, 05:40 AM
Ok god, dude you're helping me out so much, I can't believe this....you know I'm not a girl right? XD XD XD XD

Anyway. I have a feeling I'll be building that box. Although, I think I need to think about it a little bit more.

So, it would be two plants vegging at once? And two plants in bloom?

Would there be anyway to have 4 in and 4 out?

Hmm. I know I could get small pots for the veg room...maybe...1 gallon buckets? 2-3 gallons?

And then 4, 5 gallon buckets all pushed together to fit, directly under the HPS, for the bloom?

That should work right?

I can't go in the closet right now because it's dark cycle (*crosses fingers*), but I will see tomorrow if I could fit 4, 5 gallon buckets right in the left side corner, all pushed together into a square.

Maybe they will need a bit more room to even out and grow a little though.

Hmm. Well. The space is the issue. I will check tomorrow, wake up early and do some measurements, and find out the max size for the box, even if I have to add a third wall, or build a total box in order to make it extend out passed the wall, and maybe even just build a longer one, and place it up top like I was going to do, and maybe put the fixture in there to save money during the whole process.

Hmm...I think it's going to be a box though, that sounds about right, as long as I can build the thing and then make the easy access door, easily accessible.

If I can fit 3-4 pots down below, with a small box on the left side, and then have the whole top shelf for anything I need to store, that might be the key.

Although.

With an HPS, and that tall of a closet, and at least half of the closet left over after building a box, and maybe the whole thing if I can store or even build the box up onto the shelf, how much can I yield with 2 plants?

Thanks a bunch, I wish there was a way to pay you back...but I see that you have that covered on your own ! :D

Wait - ate? You're not a female? Forget it then, this whole thing is off! - and then you talk about having to get wood!

Depending on your exact dimensions - I figured 6-8 in the veg room and 4-6 in the bloomroom at any one time. You won't be able to veg them HUGE but that space should get you some decent size plants. Once they are ready to flower, you repot them and then give them a couple of days in the bloomroom at 18/6 to get used to the big show and the new pots - then flip the switch.

400W HPS, if you use the space efficiently and grow, say 4-6 plants, I would think you could yield 1-1.5 oz per plant pretty easily. Even more once you learn the strain and maximize light exposure, or start SCRoG/SOG grows. Of course it depends on the strain, nutes, temps, and everything working together.

Don't go cooking her now, make sure your temps are good. Shes not that small, considering all things it should take off in the next couple of weeks. Under a 400 if things go well an oz easy

If your clone doesn't take, you can always try to re-veg the plant to get clones - some plants respond well to this, some do not like it at all. But you can try. Lemme know if you need info on this.

Venting into the walls - you CAN do that but as notorious said, you'll get the occasional whiff. Is anyone going to go looking for the dead skunk under the house? ;P

Right afterwards I tied down the main cola slightly, just to even the height of the bud sites out, I may not gain a large main cola, but I hope to maximize the yield now because the lower sites were getting next to zero light because of the huge fan leaves that were sitting off the main cola up top.

Here's a couple bud sites from just now:

Here's the whole setup, I cleaned up a bit, minimized everything.

http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t100/highmai/Plant/100_3490.jpg

In the last shot you can see the dryer tubing, that I attached to a metal vent piece and then drilled into the hood of my light, it now sucks air off the bulb via a fan on the outside of the closet, into the room. It keeps temps normal, except for that hot point of after about 11 hours with the light on. Other than that it's low, and acceptable, and there's no smell.

I'm thinking once the smell starts to come, I will buy the pieces to create a carbon scrubber and then buy an inline fan of a 6 or 4 inch kind and then just replace the now computer fan, with that. I'm sure that will take care of any problems. The sounds not too bad either, but the heat WILL build up in my room if I don't take care to crack a window or door to let it out, and that can get crazy. But I'm happy for the way things have gone.

I've got a clone in progress. :] Looks like she took.

Yay!..

Awww :(, mother plant has yellow drooping lower leaves.

Is this yellowing trying to move upwards as calcium or iron is being sucked from the plant because of lock-out/PH imbalance?

I think I splashed fert down there a few times...

Before, the whole closet:

After:

http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t100/highmai/Plant/100_3490.jpg

Much nicer to me. :pimp:

Thanks for all the help. I don't really know what to do much from here. I have a small but workable veg/clone chamber going. I really only want females from here on out, so I might get a nice little pot, weak soil, and then veg that rooted clone from here on out.

Although!!!

DUN DUN DUNNNNN, I found a friend of a friend that has NYC diesel growing, apparently he clones always. So I suppose finding a clone from him shouldn't be too difficult. Very head high stuff, I liked it, but my friend who smokes middies too much didn't, said he couldn't detect it. I could! :stoned:

And then another friend of a friend has some kind of strain, all I know is it's covered in crystals, and smells like fruit. Hopefully I can get a few clones of both and ...breed? Lol, I think I'm getting ahead of myself here.

So I guess that's it for an update, I need an inline fan still, and to make that carbon scrubber, and to put it all together and make sure it's not loud, and then build some type of air proofer for the closet, I think I'll just section off each side of the door way, and air-tight each side with black and white poly, and then just kind of shimmy/squeeze, stretch the fabric through in the middle to get through, it's pretty tough material.

Ask if you have any questions about the setup, ANYTHING that I could do to make it better, or any picture requests, I'd be happy to continue loading this thread up, and learning. :D

Edit: The bud site shots must've been from the 31 and that's a piece of a bandaid on my hand. XD

Is it possible to cause a hermie by ripping off female flowers, letting male flowers grow back?

Or would it just be a hermie no matter what?

I may be having some trouble with this.

I'm getting those growths that look like the normal ones I've seen, only much larger and without a pistil.

But they're sort of like the ones that I normally see for the female flower, only right before the pistil pops out, and they are forming on the parts of the plant that are just now forming flowers, so it may just be a female that I'm confusing for hermie.

But they're only forming on the spots of the branch where I previously picked off the flowers. I'm thinking they were female flowers in the first place, and my picking them off, caused the plant to become hermie, but I'm too confused...

Looks like its going nicely! Your clone rooted great, thats your first time? Nice work! Glad you got the temps wrangled under control too. Sounds like the plan is working. Now, hook me up with some of those NYCD clones! ;)

In my experience I have found once a hermie, always a hermie. and if it is a hermie, just get rid of it (kinda like if you found out the girl you met last night at a bar has a dick). Not worth a shitload of hermied seeds in my next batch ya know, plus the headache/hassle of trying to remove em all. Thats why I pulled my AK48 a few weeks early :(. But if its only the one plant then you should be ok letting it finish.

And yes, I believe you can induce "hermification" by removing female flowers - anything that causes stress to the plant. Hermaphroditism seems to be a survival mechanism. Can you take some good pics of one before you rip it off next time?

Yellowing in the older growth is (somewhat) normal, and it doesn't look too extensive in your case. Looks like its a little light atrophied as well, which happens to the lower shaded branches. Just make sure you N her up next time you feed, or foiliar feed some N (if not flowering) and she'll be fine. Splashing concentrated fertilizer on her is not a good idea :) I like to swap my mothers out every 6-8 months or so, with the healthiest clone of the then current batch. Then you can either flower the 6 month old mommy in the chamber, or (as I'm gonna try this year) just put the old mommy outside and let her rip.

Looks like you are doing good - next time you take pics, take some out of the closet with normal lighting and show off them buds!

Yea, I suppose I will finish, and hurry up and start putting more ready to flower plants in there, I just need to get a potent strain to start cloning.

My god do I want to try an outdoor grow, I can't imagine what I would gain.

Yea, hopefully I will get a good strain, and then get good at the cloning vegging cloning flowering process.

Guess it's a Herm.

Buuuummmeerr..

I wonder if I caused the turn...probably..well..good lesson learned...don't bully the plant or force it to live in an unnatural environment.

I will redo this post later, photof*cket is not working.

Yep thems nads :( bummer. .. maybe temps a bit high.. Although the herm gene is inbred, it might've hermie'd on you regardless of if the conditions were perfect.

Other than that, the leaves are nice and vibrant, healthy, no burn, great shade of green. Looks like good bud structure. I know that calyx LOOKS like a bannana, but look at both closely next to each other, you'll see a world of difference. Just keep on plucking them bannanas when you see them to stick it out for this one. I hope your mom/clone is not from this plant, because it might have the same reaction to flowering. :( get your friend to get you some clones asap!

I hear ya, I hope that one turned from the stress and extremely unstable growing conditions, rather than having genes that are totally unable to flower as a female in the general conditions I have them in.

I have one premo seed, which I think I'll plant now, if that turns male, would allowing cross-breeding really help me out? Would it make good weed.

Or would it just turn the bag-seed/middie plants I have into crappy bag-seed middie plants, that are only slightly different?

Yep. My friend (lucky he) is in Thailand right now, doing god knows what :rasta: , hopefully he'll be back and I won't forget to call him.

That diesel was mighty nice, very strange almost chemically but still funky smelling long buds that lookd almost bluish from the crystals.

Here are some pics of the plant under the HPS and under natural light, in one of the HPS pics you can see some of the crystals building up, not much, but it looks pretty good to me for a seed that came out of a mid-grade bag. I'm thinking I'm going to be buying seeds though, because my friend wants to either chip in or pay for them.

How many days have you been flowering now?

Nice to see you again, have I wished you good luck? :)

All in all, I'd say it was a good grow, I learned everything I know about it all, and I had some fun going in and out of methods.

I finally got a first grow down, noob style, so I can move on to some REAL quality.

Screw ever buying again, I smoked a small joint of this stuff, and actually got a nice lil buzz to the head. I'm glad it's something! Better than what I thought!

I can't wait to start again though, the only plans I have now are buying a professionally crafted cool tube and fan(size as well).

Seeing as all this half-way stuff (to make the house livable) simple doesn't cut it.

I want to simply get one of those cooling set-ups to lower the heat, and that's the last environmental (strictly external) factor that I need to change. Other than adding more light. :)

Then I will work to calculate and better meet my plants needs with feeding and proper timing for waterings and growing room shifts etc etc, all the details and peripherals.

Thanks to all who witnessed (silently), and to those who helped, you guys are great.

Look for me in the future, in a month or two I'll start up round two, and it will be better by far! :rastasmoke: Happy living.
