My father was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis about six years ago. He is not yet at a point where he has trouble eating or sleeping, that I know of (since I am away at college). The trouble is, he is very conservative and so far as I can tell does not feel that marijuana has any medicinal value. I, however, firmly beleive that it does. Why else would the human body have cannabinoid receptors in it? My question to you, fellow message board reader is:
What type of arguments can I make to him in the future that will show him that cannabis does indeed hold great medical value?
Here is an article that says there is now proof that cannabis does help the symptoms of ms.
BBC News | HEALTH | Cannabis 'helps MS sufferers' (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/662254.stm)
Here is the google search:
cannabis for ms - Google Search (http://www.google.ca/search?q=cannabis+for+ms&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a)
Lots of good info there. The main thing is there does seem to be medical proof that it does alleviate symptoms. And other synthetic types of thc are being developed so people don't have to smoke the weed.
Also check out Sativex:
Sativex approved: In April 2005, Health Canada, the drug regulatory agency for Canada , approved the use of the cannabis-derived drug Sativex® (GW Pharmaceuticals) to treat MS-related pain. The approval was based on a small, four-week clinical trial conducted in the United Kingdom in 66 people with MS, the results of which were published in 2005 (Rog DJ et al. Neurology 2005;65:812-819). Sativex contains extracts from the marijuana plant and is administered as a spray into the mouth. This drug is not approved in the United States. In response to a request by the Committee on Safety of Medicines, an advisory body to the Canadian regulatory authority, GW Pharmaceuticals is now conducting a clinical trial to evaluate Sativex as a treatment for spasticity.

thanks perp. now that my parents and I are talking more, I will continue to work on opening my fathers mind to the idea so that when the time comes that he can benefit from cannabis, I will know enough about it to prove to him that maybe he was wrong to judge it so much....gotta take baby steps.
