View Full Version : Bastard Van!
Damnit, got up this morning at 4:30, and i out the door by 5:30 [am]
Got in the van, key in, turn, nothing. Apart from a tick tick tick tick tick.
I knew what it was straight away, the bloody battery didnt have enough charge, it was the relays ticking. So i had to wait an hour to charge it a little before i could start it, then i left it running for 30 mins and then took it out for a spin for about 15 mins. Came home, checked the batt and it's not holding it's charge. So now i've gotta shell out £60 on a new battery... now that may not seem too bad... but i only had the flaming thing changed 18 months ago.
This van, SUCKS. But, at least i got a day off out of it.
If i wasnt an engineer i would have had to call someone out... and that would have been more of an expence cos im not with the AA or RAC.
Anyway, moan over, my vans pissing me right off today, and i need a new exhaust, but fuck it, im just going to replace part of it myself.

Same here mate, i think it was -6. It's by far the thickest frost we've had this year, easily. Well, it's only the second this year lol! It's still all over my hedge lol.
Although, it's a fairly nice day. No clouds or anything so it's nice and sunny.
But damn, it's too cold lol, bloody anti cyclone!
I've got a pesky pork chopper above my house hovering... been there for 5 mins.
Im starting to get worried lol. It'll probably be gone in a few secs. It's low though, i cant see it out of the window but it's bloody loud.
Lol. It's meant to be snowing tonight and tomorrow, but we never get alot of snow in UK. We used to, but those days are gone. Tbh, i dont even think it will snow.
anyway, i dont particually like snow, it's alright for the first day, and then it turns into ice and it's a complete wanker trying to drive lol.

You would have had to call someone to replace a battery if you werent an engineer? Im no engineer (Well, being a systems engineer doesnt count, does it?), but I can replace my own damn battery.

You said the batt was changed recently? then i think it might be your altinator, or a faulty wire. The battery should hold a charge longer then that. I have had so many problems with cars, i can sniff out the problem from a mile away.

The lights were working fine, so most people wouldnt have thought it was the batt. Most people dont even know what relays are. If someone didnt know what relays were, and the engine wasnt starting, yet the lights were working, they would have called someone out because they wouldnt have realised the battery was just a little too weak to start.

Im an Engineer mate, theres nothing wrong with anything on the van, it was just a dodgy battery. Anyway, it's been changed now. Some batterys are funny like that, the same thing happens with the boats, some batteries are just dodgy and dont hold their charge. The last battery lasted 5 years.

dude, the batt should be under warranty.
Ahhh, it doesnt bother me. I've got money to throw away. £60 aint that much, just a hassel cos i was meant to be working.

im no mechanic matey but shurly that means the thing in the van that re-charges the battery when the van is moving is not working eh? anyways yeah i knowits like one day my work asks me in an hour earlier for a poxy staff meeting.......then when i get there i find out its cancelled.
I checked the batt myself, trust me... im an engineer, i know what im doing guys... i get paid to do it. The battery wasnt holding a charge, it's nothing new, it's happened plenty of times before on the boats i work on, nothing major, just a dodgy battery. The Engine is in perfect condition, i mean, the van is 10 years + old but the engine is as good as new... thanks to my handywork.

hey lip, have you considered it could be the alternator? i mean if you're sure the alternator works then it's the battery, but otherwise, you left it on for 30 mins, the altenator should have put a charge in that battery by then...
nevermind just read the rest of the posts... if you're sure, then ok... just wouldn't want to have you shellin out more money then you have to..
The van itself is 10+ years old, but i've changed so many parts on the engine it's as good as new.
Like i said, once i got the charge up enough to pass the relays and turn the engine it started... and carried on going, but as soon as the engines off the battery looses the charge. Simply put, it's a dodgy battery.
Anyway, i ended up getting it for free from the guy i bought the last one off, i offered him £20 as he walked away but said it was alright.
At first i was planning on just getting another for £60, but in the end i just went back to the same guy.
Works fine now.
One thing that i will replace within the next month is the fuel pump.

sort of reminds me of a story of my own..it snowed... got down to about 15 or 20 degrees ferinhight(for those of you who dont know... 32 degrees is freazing...) and our pipes froze up in the house... so i went to warm up the car for a ride... and the battery was dead... so i got out and pushed it out to the road... to push start it... i got up to the lowest speed you can use to push start something... and it just slid across the ice... about 10 minutes later... a guy came and jumped it... for me... got it going, windows were frosted over... so i couldnt go in reverse to get the car back in the drive way... so i drove around the block... and slid threw 3 stop signs... i only have 4 stop signs around me..
i get home, leave the car running for an hour.... and shut it off... and restarted it... and it sounded like the battery was low... but it started....
