I am about to embark into the world of hydroponics with my new drip system. I have everything ready except for my pots. I want to use hydroton in 5" square pots. Will these be big enough to grow a whole plant in? should i get some larger pots or netpots?
I have my seedlings in 1.5" rockwool cubes, which they are about to out grow.
Now i'm off to study for my second exam of the day. Then...:bonghit:
Alrighty, congrats on the hydro setup. I would suggest netpots for any hydro setup, 4", 5" their both fine for what your doing, as well for most setups. I have my plants in 4" netpots and they grow to 6 feet somtimes without any trouble at all. I know it seems weird but it works just fine. Hope this helps.

it depends on your growing style. How big do you want to grow your plants and what yield are you looking for? That determins the size of the net pots you use in hydroponics.

well the size of the netpot really has no effect anything under 4" isnt good if u want big plants., when the roots over grow the pot they just dangle down and grow about what ever the housed it. Watch out tho the rockwool 1 inch cubes in there can be tricky this pretty much my set up. i use 5"

thanks for the help everybody
Zandor, i have a 250watt hps in a c25. I'm planning on scrogging nl x shiva, and i'll probably end up with 2 plants. I'm just wondering if I can use non-netted pots so I wouldn't have to get a cover for my tray.

the roots need room to grow what ever you can do, i use those solo cups and cut the bottoms of them, the 5" pots fit in them and they cover the roots until flower, the roots will grow out alot in flower you will need to cover them some how.

Listen to Zandor man. My drip system had 3 inch pots and would grow 4 feet plant but the root were really tight. Look up loc nar1958 red hair ladies and papya grows. But really go witth big net pots and hydrotron, just don't let the drip, drip right on the rockwool make it over to the side alittlle. Root balls don't like to be wet all the time.

Sorry but hydroponics does require good fast drainage. Roots can clog small drain holes and cause many problems. You can make a cover out of pond liner you know just to keep the lights out of the tray and away from the roots.
I assume you are growing from clones then?

Thanks Zandor, the pond liner will be my next acquisition. i'm actually growing from seeds i bought from nirvana, I'll post some pics when my lady comes back with the camera. I'm about a week and a half from popping my seeds, and my children are working on their second set of true leaves. i have 5 of the nl x shivas and 1 seed from my last grow of bagseed.

Right on...just keep in mind that you need to sex that plant so filling up a screen before you sex them. You could end up with holes in your plant when you find males or you just may miss one and have seeds in your buds too.
Just something to plant for and to think about. A 250 HID light is only good for a few plants in a small area. You may need to supplement that with CLF or something else.
Is your hood at least air cooled?

yeah i've got a cool tube and yes i am supplementing with cfls. I am planning on pre-training quite a bit before I put up the screen, so hopefully i'll start getting preflowers, but whatever, i might just train and not scrog ,we'll see

you could train until you sex them and then throw the screen on.

the size of the net pots doesnt matter at all, as long as the roots have a way out. my hydro big bud was set in a 2 inch net pot and grew over 6ft tall

I am not going to say anything more than I use 3.5 inch netpots to grow 4-5 bushes that yield from 5-6 oz to 3/4lb. The point is. It doesn't how big a netpot you get...If you grow a bigass plant and don't tie it to something. It is going to fall over. Now Zandor makes a point...If you grow a bunch of little plants from clones, then you could use 2" netpots, I have 2" 3" 3.5" 5" I use them all.
