Marigolds! Growing up our gardens were always ravaged by deer, goats, or rabbits. We learnt from another farmer to plant a border of Marigolds around them and never again were our veggies stolen. Deer hate them because of the smell and at the end of the season dry the flowers break apart and scatter to seed the next year.

Hey Crissy,
Don't usually have much deer probs here but just curious -
Would Marigolgs stand out like a sore thumb?
Would they have to be all around the beds to offer protection or would just a couple mixed in be a deterent?

You can also buy coyote urine. Deers will avoid any area that has predators marking their territory.
This can be bought at several Internet sites and local organic gardening stores. It is safe for your plants and will not harm the deer. It is in many commercial deer repellents.
Note put it all around the immediate area. I personally would not put it directly on your plants. But whatever turns you on.

I read that a bar of soap (not fragrance free, the stronger smell the better) sliced up and spread around the grow area will repel deer very well.

My biggest problems are rabbits and gophers- a mix of purulent egg whites with red pepper spray is said to work well, but it hasn't done much for me.

old cd's hanging from fishing line works great. during the day the sun reflex off it and at nite the moon does the same, scares the critters. That and while your at your spot take a piss by your area and leave some human hair laying around. All or just one of these will solve your problems.

Not the best idea to use YOUR own hair, it can be used as incriminating evidence if the cops ever bust ya!
What about the deer in suburbanish areas? I don't think they'll be afraid of a few CDs laying around if they don't even lift their heads when a 16 wheeler comes rushing past...
