I just can't make up my mind on what I should do... I need some advice...
Basically, I'm enrolled in a course called Biology of Cancer and it's a great course, I love it. My professor its such a cool and funny guy and seems very laid back and nice...
Part of the requirements to pass the course is to give a 10 minute presentation to the class about some cutting-edge journal article pertaining to cancer. It has to be recent (within the last 3 years) and has to be very specific subject-wise.
I did a bunch of research and found great information stating that THC actually has anti-carcinogenic properties! It has so many medicinal uses that could help so many people that I am amazed that I never made the effort to find this information before now!
1. THC actually binds and stimulates apoptosis of cells that are replicating the Human Papillomavirus and cancerous cells of the prostate via cannabinoid receptors.
2. THC can act as an agonist and activate cell death of human glioblastoma multiforme (GBM)... these are tumors of the brain!
3. THC has been proven to actually inhibit angiogenesis of most types of human gliomas.
I want so bad to present this as my topic but I'm afraid people will pass judgement.
I'm even more afraid of what this professor may think since I plan to do post-bacc work and may want to work in his lab in the future. This is a small class of around 25 so I'm scared that I will stick out as the guy that smokes pot.
On the other hand, I know that i could make one fuckin hell of a presentation if i knew that people would take it seriously...
So I'm contemplating emailing my professor and sending him these links to some journal articles and asking him to read and assess them... then he can tell me if he thinks its a good choice or not. But I'm not sure if i should email him or just forget about the whole thing and choose another topic...

I'm stuck... and i wanna present this topic more than any other..
What do you guys think i should do?

I would either e-mail or ask the professer in person if it would be OK. If he says no, ask why.

Dude, you dont have to think about shit like this.
just put together a nice presentation...very nice research done btw...and tell the whole class and your professor about cannabis.
Even more, they might understand it and become marijuana advocates themselves.
but the worst that can happen is they put you down for being a pot-head and who the FUCk cares what they think anyway...thats just my:twocents:
Good luck with your presentation:D hope it goes well

Since I have cancer, my bias will show but I say present the damn thing.
But if you are more worried about your reputation, I wouldn't present it. If you want to make a difference, albeit a very slim one, do it!

Do it! If there's research on something you love, chances are you'll feel much more at ease talking about it. I did mine for speech class, and people loved it. Risks like these are worth taking, and chances are at least SOMEONE else in the class smokes.
Hell, give the presentation in a suit and tie, with a rasta wig :D That'd be neat.

I'm sorry to hear that. If I had cancer I would smoke weed 24/7.

Be you. If you want and feel strongly about giving a presentation about cannibus, do it. Don't be embarassed of it. Your limiting your freedom.

I think you should do it because if these people are smart they will listen and learn. It sounds like a very valid topic for you to present, and one that would be very interesting to listen to you present. Ask first though. If you're worried about losing respect in the eyes of your teacher think of it this way, if hes willing to discount valid information that could help people just because the topic is unpopular than he isnt as great as you think.

Dude i gave a presentation (high school, not even college) about why weed should be legalized, not even for medical purposes. I mean, it was part of it, but not the main reason.

Go for it, you did reserch, and it's not like your lying about it. THC is just a chemical, and if they can't see that then give them the finger.:S4:

Once I gave a presentation of the benefits of using Ketamine (Special K) for neonates with respiratory ailments and it went over pretty good, minus the hand gestures my friends were giving me from the back row during the presentation..
If you feel comfortable presenting it, go for it. If not, a suggestion would be to google "Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors" which is cutting edge treatment for cancer. New therepeutics for cancer. It has relevance and is new technology. Just hope no one else chose this topic. Good luck.

GO FOR IT!!! Have tons of research to back your claims- there is bound to be at least one kid who still buys the DARE propaganda. You will need to convince that kid with hard science. Here's a site for you, be sure to go toward the right to find the past issues-Lots of good stuff! Marijuana Research: Benefits, Cancer, Effects, Uses, Addiction (http://marijuana.researchtoday.net/) One thing that REALLY gripes me is that the government has known that cannabis fights cancer since 1987The piece was called "Cannabinoids Induce Incomplete Maturation of Cultured Human Leukemia Cells" 1987, how many people have died of leukemia since then???? Good luck in your presentation! - Granny

So im sitting in class today thinking about how im going to ask this guy about such an unsure subject... then all of a sudden..
he starts talkin about marijuana! saying if it were just legal, people could make a free enterprise out of it....people could grow it and sell it and the government could tax it.
Problem solved... im gonna ask him about my paper this week

Duuuude, I'm a bio major. I don't see a problem with that. I did a 15 minute presentation on a certain gene that appears to control alcoholism in people/mice. The studies also dealt with nicotine and THC. No one passed judgment. I actually recieved the only laughs any of the presentations got. Mostly because of the drunken mice. The professor told me it was interesting and of more interest and importance to college students and young people in general. Goooood times.

i think you should go for it. i think the professors really gonna look at how well researched the topic is and how much effort was put into the presentation. if you have a very well researched and great presentation what judgment can people pass? it would just shatter all the negative perceptions of marijuana that these people have

If i felt like people were genuinely laughing at my topic or at me i would prob go ape shit...
Thats why im nervous about presenting this.
I dont think im going to even include the word "marijuana" in my presentation.... just keep it scientific and talk about the actual cannabinoids.
I wanna make sure i stay on the topic of cancer... and not veer off into a topic of marijuana legalization.:S5:

So i finally went to ask him and he actually found it to be a pretty interesting topic.
He said he has never read anything like this before and it seems like a valid journal article. He told me to go for it and even that he's looking forward to listening to my presentation.
GOD I love open-minded people.
