WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic U.S. presidential candidate John Edwards on Sunday said that he would raise taxes, chiefly on the wealthy, to pay for expanded healthcare coverage under a plan costing $90 billion to $120 billion a year to be unveiled on Monday.
"We'll have to raise taxes. The only way you can pay for a healthcare plan that cost anywhere from $90 to $120 billion is there has to be a revenue source," Edwards said on NBC's Meet the Press news program.

And so the taxing begins........:S2:

a huge chunk of the middle-class is always included in taxes like this and the very wealthy can find all of those built-in loopholes. so who always ends up paying for these do-nothing give-aways? the middle-class, of course. this is just another example of the rich grabbing more, the poor getting little and the middle being crushed into submission.
the destruction of the middle-class is the desired end result to all of these fake liberal schemes. a large middle-class takes too much power away from the rich and they don't like that, now do they. with a nice wide gap between the rich and the poor and no one in between, our subservience is assured. or so goes that particular conspiracy theory.
same old story, same old song and dance - my friend

How true! Edwards isn't going to get this passed by JUST taxing his buds in the house/senate. The middle class will take the blunt as usual and the upper class can enjoy the frills without the bills.

How's this for crazy:
My wife had to go to the ER, in a Brooklyn "city" hospital, three weeks ago and was given emergency surgery, which my healthcare pays for - including one followup visit with the surgeon. He wanted to see her again in two weeks, but the hospital does not accept my insurance (UHC), so we asked how much it would cost to pay cash. Guess what? They do not accept cash, and if you don't have a plan that they accept, you can't come back for more care even if you want to pay out of pocket.
Unbelievable, or what? I know one thing - there are probably people that will get care no matter what, but that's best left to the imagination.
The municipalities are so tied-up in getting taxes for everything, the middle-class gets screwed even if they WANT to pay for something themselves.

haha, maybe a war that costs $177 million a day makes more sense? I don't think so. At least our tax monies towards healthcare can do something positive for our country's citizens...rather than giving handouts to Iraqi's.

Before Romney left office here in MA he passed some mandatory health insurance for employees. Now if employeers don't offer health insurance they have to pay an extra tax that goes into a state fund to pay for the program.
Loopholes will always be there. Turn yourself into a charity and donate money to your organization. Unfortunately you need more money for it to work than most middle class family's make. One thing in P4B article said about repealing a tax cut for those who make 200k+ a year. IMO 200k+ is more then the average person would ever make in one year. I personally would like to see less tax on citizens and higher taxes for medium to large businesses.
LEGALIZE WEED AND TAX IT! I know you bastards in the government are reading this!

Hell, why pay for it at all? Let's have universal healthcare and pay for it with a tax cut. Just leave it to the next generation to pay for it all.

Brilliant, and very hateful. A tax on the rich would more than fund health care, that and stopping the insane wars. If we cared as much about peoples health as we cared about the bottom line, we might get some decent health care.

Smoke and mirrors. The supplemental is not included in the Bush budget, a mere 251 billion bucks. More disgusting dishonesty from Dubya!

you know, I use to work at a Gas station, and it would piss me the hell off to see some1 drive up in a Lexus or Mercedes and then go pay for their food with Food Stamp. I am not a supporter of a national medicare system. Just because some1 doesnt have any medical insurance, doesnt mean they cant afford it, it means they dont wana pay for it, cause they know Uncle Sam(the democrat sam) will pay for it.

you know, I use to work at a Gas station, Seems to me you'd be first in line for freebees, Gas station guys can't afford fancy health care. And if a guy in a lexus didn't want to pay, as the previous post said, he'd pay through his taxes. Now lets see how smart you are: Heres your choice; endless war @ 177 million+ a day or single payer health care. Whats your answer?

If you do chose health care you'll need it. When some of these freaks over there that we should have killed make their way here........you'll have a need for it for sure.

worst case scenario:
we get stuck paying for an endless war AND another do nothing give-away (that's what it will end up as if the bureaucrats are in control)
the middle-class pays and the insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, medical conglomerates etc. reap the rewards of the second rate care they will grudgingly lavish on a duped public.

I'm not quite sure, but I AM quite sure that invading Iraq was not the proper response? Osama Bin Laden..(if you'll remember, he's the guy who claimed responsibility..and he's from Afghanistan.) For some reason GWB found it more important to remove Sadaam Hussein from power..(most likely because his daddy didn't get to do it) rather than to HUNT DOWN AND KILL the stupid FUCKING BASTARD who called the shots for 9/11 attack. Bush is such an arrogant prick.

Oh, I'm sure that us over there killing them is keeping them from coming to the united states? Not in a fucking million years. We're just pissing them off by staying there...Automatic citizenship means that if they want to be in America, they're going to be here/already are here. Kinda like the DEA continues to fight 'war on marijuana' despite the fact that any individual in America who wishes to smoke marijuana is already doing so...meaning that the war on marijuana is a complete failure. And if the war is the way to keep them from immigrating, as you've indicated in this quoted post, there's no need for the war, because they can migrate freely to America if they wish? I'm finally very stoned and I wish you would please speculate for me...how you think that us killing them is keeping them from 'coming here and blowing us to kingdom come.':S5: :S5: :S4:

Bush picked the wrong country to invade, it should have been Iran in the first place and, based on my military intel experience, I swear I said this right after 9-11. (Jesus Christ, did anyone think of PLANTING WMD's over there for chrissake? How stupid is that if that was the basis....) Saddam would have been putty in our hands pooping in his drawers with us over there hopefully disemboweling Iran properly. The Sunnis and Shiites would still being murdered in Iraq and so, under control by Saddam. But, we would have to have him cut the Kurds loose. I still say he needed a mentor like the US and a little supervision and we would have a little buddy over there and cut rate oil.
2 biggest issues are healthcare and energy self-sufficiency. Tell me the answer isn't grabbing control of the oil spigot over there? Also, with freee healthcare, my wife and I could live on a farm, grow weed happily and gleefully and move away from a world of a88holes. I will let Donald Trump pay for it too - thanks Don.

My 2 cents:
1 penny: my father in-law has traveled a lot in other countries (china, pakistan, cambodia, vietnam, turkey etc.) and there is NO middle class in most of the worlld. He thinks our country is heading that way. With all the taxes paid by the middle class I think he may be right.
2nd penny: I work in orange CO NC where edwards is building a multi million dollar 6+K square foot house I doubt he is going to tax the "rich" ie himself a whole lot if you can afford a house that costs as much to heat as one to live in you can afford lawyers and accountants to get you out of taxes.
