"You can say she's having heart rhythm and heart valve problems and is in the hospital and, we hope, will be released next week."

Thanks for the thread, P4B, and the good wishes from others. Birdie can use the positive vibes. She's had her share of heart stuff to deal with, but this inflammation of her valves is not a good thing. I read her your replies by phone just a few moments ago and she laughed in response. Thanks for that. I'll provide anohther update tomorrow when I get a chance. Don't worry about the earlier post, Slipknot. I appreciate that P4B checked with us on that first, and she's fine with the basic info here.
Y'all take care. Thanks again.

Dave and Birdgirl,
Sorry to hear about this. We had a very serious problem recently also.
My wife had to go the ER by ambulance two weeks and a half weeks ago. I called 911 - she was sick, but wouldnâ??t have decided to call on her own. We were told that she needed emergency surgery immediately for complete bowel obstruction. We were lucky -the surgeon that performed the operation, which took three hours, is very well regarded (listed on Castle & Connolly several years) and there was no gangrene. We'll know more when we get the operative and pathology reports and bring them to an gastroenterologist. It was due to adhesions from previous (unrelated) surgery and/or a fibroid strangling the intestine.
She's home now, recovering - with only a setback due to pain from a intestinal/groin (we think) strain that occurred after the hospital release.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery and future health.

Thank you.
It came as a total shock - I was in the ER with her from 8 AM to 11PM, while they were running CAT scans and other tests, and went home because I was wiped out and did not suspect that the condition was that serious. I then got a call and had to go back - after midnight. This was a close call - five more hours and it would have been too late - there was no time for a second opinion or doctor-hunting.
After we get the reports, we have to find out what to do about maintenance and prevention - but there really isn't much you can do to actually prevent the adhesions. We're hoping that the fibroid was the main culprit - and not adhesions that will come back. In the past she's had surgeries for myomectomies, a hysterectomy, a non-malignant ovarian tumor (one ovary removed), and an appendix removal during the ovarian surgery because it was extremely inflamed. We think that a fibroid, or endometrial tissue, attached itself to the small intestine and caused the blockage. I took her to the ER 3 months ago for vomiting, but they blamed her symptoms on an anti-inflammatory med she got from a podiatrist - I now think that she had partial blockage at the time, which became complete when she started throwing up bile. This was her worst surgery yet - and the others were not picnics.

i feel like shit... i thought this thread was for some one to ask birdgirl for something, like maybe about one of her pets... but i didnt relise she was in the hospital...since im a nice guy... im not going to make you fill out a application for my (i forget the word)gratitude(ithink thats the word i was trying to think of, i hope it is to) i know its very scary going to the hospital... scary thing is... i have not been in the hospital for something that was directly related to me... except for one time when i was born... everyother time was for some one else...(exsamples... grandma, grandpa, my younger brother... and a ex gf) and even for those ex-samples its scary...
anyways... i hope you get better... and i hope to see you back on here soon... your one of the nicest peoples on here...

Hey, guys. Bird sends her love to you all. I took a print-out of this thread up to her at the hospital this morning. She laughed and was thrilled to see it. She's feeling better and is being upgraded to a different room sometime today when one becomes free. May get to come home on Monday. We're feeling relieved that she's looking and breathign a lot better. She's even starting to be interested in food again, too, which is good. Not green jello, though, or blue. She always says that any sort of food product that comes in the same colors as Windex or other cleaning products can't be a good thing.
Thanks for your messages. I'll update this again after I see her later today.

Birdie sends her love to you all. She's been moved up to a regular room now, which is good news, and is breathing better and has better color and cardiac output. Her mom made her her favorite meal, which we took to her tonight in hopes that she'll eat better and gain some weight. She'll probably be dismissed on Monday afternoon or evening if all continues to go well. We can't manage to get her connected from the hospital using her school laptop or I swear she'd be online here this very minute. Trying to get her to rest and take it easy is not an easy thing to do. I tried to give her a re-cap of the goings-on here but probably didn't do a very good job. Thanks for all the good wishes, guys. Goodnight for now.
Phew, good to hear shes doing better. I've been worrying all yesterday!
But the most important thing is she works on getting better!
We're all thinking of her and cant wait untill shes fighting fit!
Thankyou VERY much for the updates Dave.

It's true I'm not very good with technology like PCs and laptops. I'm better with medical matters.
The food her mom made her was meat loaf with tomato gravy and rice, something that's been one of Birdie's favorite comfort foods since she was a kid. My mother-in-law is a great cook, a talent my wife inherited. Today her mom's making another of her favorites, fried chicken. Also with gravy and rice. We'll take that up to her tonight. The hospital food is not very good.
Bird's been up and walking a good bit today and working hard at talking her doctor into releasing her to go home, but he wasn't buying that. No earlier than Monday afternoon, he said. She says hello to everyone here.

We're working hard at intentionally fattening her up with those foods. Bird's far too thin right now and has naturally very low, safe cholesterol levels. In her case, her heart function's at far more risk from her being too thin than it is from eating those foods. They're a key part of the plan to get some more meat on those bones of hers.

Your hunch was excellent. I tell 99% of heart patients to stay away from stuff like that. The ones with coronary artery disease, that is. In Bird's case, she has the clearest coronary arteries in the country but has electrical/rhythm-related problems that are aggravated by the fact that her weight's too low.

There's so much that's been happening here. New forums, even. I feel like I've been gone a year instead of the better part of a week.
I may be on for shorter periods of time for the next week or two. I got some inflammation/infection in two of my heart valves, which didn't help my arrhythmia I already had. They let me go home to try and keep me from getting an antibiotic-resistant bug of some kind in the hospital. But I'm tired, tired and will be taking medicine to fight the infection for two months. Much love to you guys. More later after I've slept a while.

I was just heading that way now to put in my vote on the feminine hygiene products and to see what everyone has to say about makeup. I love the idea of that new forum! Thanks for the warm welcome.

Can't stand to get back in bed. I've just spent five days in one. Besides, from the looks of my bed, it's taken. There are two cats and two dogs asleep behind me on the bed. One dog is under the comforter and the other animals are on top. I'm up for a while. I'll go to bed when Dave does in another hour and a half or so. I may go lie on the couch for a while, though. At least it's animal-free.

OK, daddy Slip, I'm going to go lie on the couch for a while and watch the news and eat strawberry popsicles. As soon as I do that, the animals will follow me in there, and then I can go get in the animal-free real bed. Talk to you tomorrow. Tell Snookums hello and that I love her!

Yeah, it's a strange dynamic, to be sure. A little too distortedly Oedipal for me, but I think everyone's "fathering" me right now, including you and my son I gave birth to, my husband, P4B, and my real dad. It's y'all's way of showing your love, and I appreciate it. OK, I'm going to sign off now before anyone else tells me to rest or eat something. If I preted to be asleep, no one can try to persuade me to eat anything else.

I'm home, y'all. Never been so glad to be out of anyplace in my life and to see my dogs. Thank you for all your kind words and good wishes. I loved this thread when Dave brought me prints of it.
I'm so glad you are home Em!
That's some scary stuff going on. :( Please rest and eat eat eat!
I know when my weight gets too low bad stuff starts to happen.
I'd fatten you up right fast with loads of brownies and all things homemade!
FEEL BETTER SOON!!!!

Thanks, Lip, my sweet and wonderful friend. I missed you. Sorry you were worried. I think I'm on the mend now. Just one night at home and I already feel worlds better. Amazing how nice it is to sleep through the night without IV alarms going off, EKG leads coming unstuck, or nurses coming in to take my blood pressure or listen to my pulse/heartbeat. Don't get me wrong. Hospitals serve an important purpose, and nurses are the most important people working inside. But the routine in a hospital isn't exactly restful for patients. It's much better to be home and sleeping in my own bed with my husband nearby and my doggies and kitties up against me.

Thanks for all the sweet, wonderful messages, guys. I love you, too. Orangeman, you are my sweet baby, and I just adore you. You know that, right? Thanks for the prayers.
Today I surfed online for a while earlier. Then I rested. Then my dad took me to a doctor's appointment. Then I studied for a while. I've stayed pretty caught up with school, fortunately, and can go back on Thursday. Then I sat out back with my dad in the sunshine and watched the dogs play in the yard (it was 70 degrees here today). Then I rested some more. And at every step along the way, I was eating. Breakfast. Supplement milkshake. Lunch. Snack. Ice cream. Reese's peanut butter cups. And now I'm back online and am waiting for Dave to get home from work so he can ask me what I've eaten so far today and listen to my breathing and see if he agrees that it's clearer. At this rate, I should weigh 300 pounds by, oh, Valentine's Day.

Enjoy it while it lasts! Stuff yourself, then renew your commitments to get back in shape! When you look at now, it sucks to lose all you worked hard for, but you'll get it back in optimal shape, trust me :)
I'm glad you are feeling much better!

OK, Skink, now you're just trying to freak me out by fattening up my avatar!! My worst fears imagined. Birdgirl turns into a wide-load fowl.
You'll be glad to know, THCBongman, that my doctor said if I weren't in such good cardio and fitness shape before I picked up this bug that things would have been much worse and that I would have a much more difficult time shaking off pneumonia, which I'm apparently at high risk for right now. My five-times-a-week workouts have set me in good stead, even if I'm having to stay away from the gym for a time and just let my metabolic rate slow down a bit. I'll be back to my taut self in good time. He told me today I can start to do walking (not race-walking or running and not any cardio machines) in the neighborhood and lift very light weights to try and maintain my strength and regain the ground I've lost in the last two or three weeks.
