O.k. if you are going to be sarcastic or make a joke in your post, I suggest using a smilie to show that it is a joke and you aren't being serious.
Ex.
Yeah, your a smart one. :D
It helps to understand in what context what you wrote should be taken in.
Ex 2
You all should be warned the world will end in 7 days. ;)
With out the wink we are left wondering, at least in the back of our minds, if you are just some crazy who really believes he knows when the world will end.

Im sorry if this is about my last post on your thread. My sarcasm is always good sarcasm....so I feel no need for a smiley...because everyone knows I cant be taken seriously.

I was just complaining to my friend about how nobody can tell when someone is being sarcastic over the internet, lol. Well, sometimes they can, but... hmm, whatever. =)

No, it wasn't in reply to your post. It is more for the newer members who's persona's we havn't figured out yet. I can usually figure out in what to take what a regular member has said, but the newer members I have no idea.

half the fun of using sarcasm on the boards is finding out who can figure it out. it's all just shits and giggles anyway, so a few misunderstandings ain't gonna kill nobody.

It is confusing though when I'm not sure if the person is a religous fanatic or a down to earth guy because I'm not sure in which way it was meant.

I think sarcasm is best when unannounced. There will always be people who fail to understand it, and are forced to wonder whether someone is being serious, or just sarcastic. Perhaps they'll simply have to reread a post. Such a shame.
Smilies would take all the guess work out of it. And I, personally, enjoy making the reader struggle for comprehension sometimes.
*note the utter absence of smilies in this post*

But then the national divide comes into play. A lot of people have noticed that Brits tend to use harsher sarcasm, therefore hate us with a passion, because they just don't get it. Useless twats!

Nobody really hates the brits because of their sarcasm. I think everyone just finds them to be kinda lame, and they really tend to cling to their stereotypes.
Its not that we don't get. It's just that its kinda stupid.
Oh well. I'm being sarcastic by the way.
Not really.
