Has anyone noticed the increasing amount of dumb things kids/teenagers are saying and doing, not just on the boards, but in real life? Everyday i see more and more teens and kids that are raised by their parents through a cell phone and tv. They ask stupid questions that common sense could answer, never do any work to find an easily accesible answer, or just blantantly do not care at all. Ignorance is the most annoying thing in the world to me when people do nothing about it. If youre ignorant about something for the simple fact you have no heard/learned/saw whatever about it, thats fine, you now have the opportunity to do so. But if youre ignorant and just ignore/dont try to learn, wtf?
i dunno, maybe im just annoyed with a few certain people in my life and feel like making a statement, but it really feels like people now-a-days around 16 and younger just dont give a shit about the world anymore, and pretty soon when that generation is running the world, i think we're royally fucked in about 20 years

Just go to your local city high school. Some kid today ask what a term in office was. And no one in the school cares about getting an education either. They think they are gonna be the next big rapper or sports player. We need a generation revamp.

Me too, except without the junior part. Its just such ignorance in kid's minds these days.

kids have always been dumb. TV and myspace have just made it a hundred times worse.
but i have a feeling that the kids who spend their lives watching mtv are gonna grow up to be the opposite people of who they are now. or at least i hope so.

i presented this argument to a friend of mine earlier, and he tried to give me the bullshit"well maybe they havent learned it yet" argument. It's complete horseshit. If kids spent some time watching the news, reading a few books, read the newspaper, or shit JUST GET OUTSIDE AND DO STUFF, they would learn everything they need to know...and its just as much the parents fault as it is theirs....The parent generation in their 20's early 30's is where i see big fuck ups. Parents that are in their mid to upper 40's right now(baby boomer generation) seem to have raised a decent generation, but the ones below us just dont gve a fuck...anyone wanna go live on an island with me?

according to your profile your 19.. so your part of this young generation
and nah, i wouldnt say people are getting dumber.. but smarter.. alot of youth are dumb, but then again they are some really smart young people out there.. infact i probaly know more dumb people who are old then young..

im talking more along the lines of kids around 13 and 14, but yes i am only 19, so i do fall in to that category of hte younger generations. But that doesnt mean i cant notice these problems.

i agree wtih you on the part that yes, there are really reallly realllly smart kids out there, but its not the same..
Perfect example, after my first semester of my senior year in highschool, the freshman class had a total of 76%(around 300 kids) fail 1 or more classes. I talked about this with my principle one day during lunch cuase ive known her since i was like 3, and she too said the numbers prove it. Every year they have had a decline in average grades and test scores. Occasionally a year will come along with a smart group of kids that bump up the class stats, but overall, the school was getting dumber. Now this may be an isolated incident(i hope so) at just my highschool, but its very possible that its happening in a lot more places that we think

Aye, I think this generation (of which I am a member) is definately getting 'thicker' as time goes on.
I mean, it's such a consumerist society, with so much focus on a very vacuous, insipid celebrity culture, which really pisses me off.
Heh, just my two cents.
yea i cannot stand at all the world of celebrities. Who gives a fuck who wins what grammy, they are going to get millions for it, all you get is to pay the cable bill to watch it.

No, its definetely happening in CT too. Its not only the grades too. Its people thinking they are the shit and straight out bothering you for no apparent reason. Not to be racist, but I think the cause of it for most Puerto Ricans is that they are too lazy to even bother to learn English, and they still won't give a shit about schoolwork. Its also alot of people trying to rep their "gangsta" image while listening to 50 Cent and all of the other pop stars.

The worst part is the laws are being changed in favour of the retarded generation.
My bro who is a year older then me goes to art college and struggles to support his rent and course fees while still working hard. Meanwhile new laws mean the younger wasters in his class who don't give a shit and refuse to turn up get paid £30 for doing just that. Then take into account the sheer seriousness of the Jade Goody racism row as depicted in the media and you'll find this has started to spread to the older generation too.

Your two cents are worth a lot! I agree with you about the cultural decline- nearly everyone want to be famous, even if they are famous as fools!
I believe when people stop reading, they lose the power of the imagination- everything is spelled out, so thinking isn't necessary.
If everyone read one book a week, what a great world it would be :)

Another thing I think is the downfall of this generation is the people who smoke weed and drink to be cool and get fucked up. They put alcohol before schoolwork, studying, and family. Its sickening.

i dont think the younger generation is getting dumber, just more manipulative. the younger generation realizes that they can pass off just about all of their problems onto something else. laziness on technology and video games. attitude on mtv and popular culture. their ignorance on the public school system. weight issues on fast food. and the total lack of respect on californias proposed 'spanking' ban and things like that. my sister helps kids in grade school with behavioral problems, she tells me that even grade schoolers get away with murder because the teachers are basically to afraid to discipline the little bastards.
so yeah i don't think kids are getting dumber, they just know how to work the system.

I see what you guys mean.
I am a substitute teacher; I do anything from 9-12th grade. I, myself, am 19. I sub for kids who I used to go to school with.
I can honestly say, that although there are a large population of "dumb" kids, many of them will grow out of it. I have had 9th grade classes that make me want to tear my fucking brains out from sheer immaturity and stupidity. I sub for that same class of students, now seniors. BIG difference. Sure, there are a few immature kids still in the class, but when they get out of high school, it will hit them.
I do see faults in my generation. But I see more good than bad, and that is a heartening sign. Just give them time. God know I was immature as hell before high school, and I've turned out better than anyone could have imagined.
Fatkid- I can definately see your point about those who do that kind of stuff in order to get fucked up. I deal with them all the time. And even though I somewhat risk losing my job, I tell them if they use, they need to RESPECT it. And many have listened.
Those who do it instead of schoolwork? Their choice, nothing you can say to change it. The only thing that will change their minds is when they realize they're living in their parents's basement at 20 with no job, no money, and loser friends.
All things take time! Help our generation become better than what we think we can do.

In my opinion, kids are becoming worthless. Society is teaching kids to become worthless. My dad taught me how to hunt, fish, rebuild an engine, drive a truck, pull a trailer, operate a welder and a torch, all while he managed a multi-million dollar company.
Nowadays, people are more apt to buy an XBOX360 for their kid than a dirt bike or a project of some kind. Kids don't play sports anymore, because they can watch it all day long instead on the tv.
Though I am still but a young guy, I am way more sufficient than most people. If i ever have a boy of my own, I'll get him a really nice project car...somethat that he could be proud to roll around in. I would teach him how to work with his hands *cough*like a man should*cough* which would give him confidence. Then, when his hard work has paid off, only then could he appreciate that like a person should, like my dad did with me.

Kids can do and say some dumb stuff, but adults do, too. And frankly, I tend to think adults have them beat on most days. Kids, at least, have more growing and maturing and getting-educated to do so they'll turn out smarter in the end. What's the excuse for a 35-year-old who climbs up a broken ladder and then falls off and breaks his leg? (Working as a paramedic gives you some amazing examples of adult dumbness.)
As far as "society is teaching kids to be worthless," that's just one of those things people like to say about society. Society doesn't really make kids into anything. Parents do. Kids who've had good, attentive parents are still turning out just fine.

Society:
Xbox360
MTV Cribs
Paris Hilton
Britney Spears
Meaningless War
No, its not so much that society itself teaches kids to be worthless, its usually because their parents are neck deep in it too, with their 3 mortgages, 3 cars, 6 digit income, in debt, barely plugging along in their cookie cutter suburban sprawl house.
When society raises your child, you get what you see on MTV. A bunch of whiney kids who have never worked a day in their life. Hand them a shovel and they'll look at you like you've got green skin.

This is a really simple subject. When you were younger, you we not aware of your ignorance. Now that you're older, you see ignorant youth and think that their generation is getting dumber and more useless, when infact they are no less intelligent or useful than your generation.

It really depends on the area. The school I go to has some of the smartest people I have ever known, and they are only 16 years old. One kid visited Princeton as a part of a science team to contribute on a plasma reactor. He was a genious, and there are many like him. I actually think the technology illiterate older people are the ones who lack knowledge.

well im 16, sophmore, get high 80s and low 90s for the most part, but dont really care about my grades, or put much effort. why? because formal education isnt something that i value in any way shape or form. i read a hell of a lot on wikipedia and stuff, about stuff that actually interests me. money isnt somethign that i particularly value, therefore i see no need to waste my time learning a lot of bullshit that i'm never going to use just to get a piece of paper that says i can get a high paying job.
as for the more superficial side of my generation, who tend not to do too good in school, gonna suck for them.
my dad works with his hands, and hes really good at what he does. however, ive barely picked up anything from him (as far as manual labor skills etc.) because i never had an interest in it. as a little kid my parents could never get me to be interested in a sport.
i fail to see how manual labor build "character", as many people in the older generation put it. i think more people are realizing that manual labor fucking sucks, and there are easier alternatives.
i dont think "soceity" ruins kids, its parents that ruin kids. however, i think if everyone stopped giving a shit about what britney spears does and bullshit like that, the world would be a somewhat better place
and yea i ranted lol

Its not only kids man there are a lot of stupid adults too. They drink their beer and smoke their cigarettes and watch nascar. I'm 16 so I'd say im apart of this younger generation and I can see how superficial people are. If the only topic you can think about to have a conversation is American Idol, you need to re-think your life.

But I see no reason why this younger generation cant do better than the current generation of older people. Come on look at our current generation of Mickey Mouse leaders.

But, what your saying is that there werent dumb shit people in 9th grade 40 years ago. i dont think humanity as de-evolved since then producing more dumb people, i think every1 can be just as smart as everyone else. I personally think its the work ethic that has declined with time and people think they can just do nothing pass high school slither through college and still get a good job. They will probably be able to pull it off because they'd be satisfied with an average life.

Work ethic has not declined if intelligent has not risen. Equillibrium must occur, or you have to acknowledge that intelligence has gone up as work ethic has gone down. We are building better computers and machines to do the work that our past generations had to manually do. That's a loss of ethic, but a gain in intelligence.
BTW: If anyone thinks kids are more dumb now than before, look at the average SAT scores of applicants in college. A 1300 in the year 2006 is like a 1000 in the year 1980.

fuck this generation...although im only 17 i recognize what is happening...and its not ny accident...somebody with a lot control and a lot of money is "farming" idiotic, controllable americans.
ive never just been handed something. ive had to earn it, any way i can.
i never had a dad to teach me things like you did valkyrie because he blew his brains out when i was young as hell. ive struggled through my whole fucking life while rich kids just a few miles from me get spoon fed flan into their asshole on a golden spoon. fuckit, i rob the rich muthafuckas. when i get back in school im taking theyre wallets or theyre lives....although id much rather have the wallet becaue theyre lives aint worth shit.
you gotta find some way to survive, you gotta be smart, you gotta keep your grades up.
i wasnt smart, thats why im on probation. doesnt mean im still stupid, i know when to keep my mouth shut and who to keep it shut around.

you are an idiot
ya know i have to agree with this thread (at least the first post) it has been true that the majority of kids i've met are plain stupid, and the fact that if you ask 9/10 teenagers what they think about politics or the war, they won't know what to say, for whatever reason my unfortunate generation lacks passion for continuing the notions that made this country great, but you do not see us protesting, rioting and changing the government institution as our parents did, and i always ask myself why, why do you not care that the government now has the legal right to listen to your conversations on the phone and cell phone? the fact that the bill was passed in the first place makes me sick, as each month goes by i feel my allegiance to the united states slowly crumble away, or perhaps it is simply gaining strength as i realize that those in government now cannot be allowed to destroy this beautiful nation, although Bush can denounce me as a "liberal coward" I know this is not true, i am a pariot and i am proud, but i still ask waht is there to be proud of now? it is clear that our government has loopholes and tweaks which help people like Bush get into office and run our society like a tyrany, so what can we do now but hope for a great president, one who will reform the system so that each and every person's personal liberties are never infringed upon, maybe the government will stop acting like herb is an evil and quit brainwashing my generation and those to come, it is evident that we were brainwashed to me, i ask members of my class their opinion on it and of course they tell me its bad, but for whatever reason they never seem to know why it is bad, they claim it is bad for you health and to that i reply, besides lung cancer how else it bad for you? the government/school system brainwashed us early on starting in 3rd grade for me, still young and trusting of those in power, it was easy for them to instill negative emotions attached to the use of marijuana, these emotions were buried, but when ever that oppurtunity to smoke a joint comes up, they feel like they are somehow harming the world and society, deep in their stomach they can feel that somehow the herb is legal, most of us have already forgotten the lies told to us in DARE, but the emotions they made us feel as elementary school students have never changed for most of us.... sorry for the rant i didn't realize that was going to happen.. -kwef

You remind me of this kid that was at a party I was at. He got out of jail that night, and he didn't even bother to put back on his shoelaces. He kept going around the party, acting like he was the shit for going to jail. I wanted to knock some sense into him, but we all gotta grow in our own ways.
One day, when you get off probation and grow a little older, you'll realize how stupid this mentality is. People suffer in different ways. Life is hard for everyone, and to think you are any different is bullshit.
im just anti-political for the most part, i prefer to not get involved in debates over religion, politics, or various other things. cause people always act surprised when you dont see eye-to-eye with them. well, thats the freedom of choice.
there are a lot of ignorant people, but there are also some freaking little geniuses walking around. there's a kid going into the NFL draft now who's only 19 years old.
i think one of the biggest problems is the parents. you let a little kid raise themselves, it's not going to turn out pretty. they'll do whatever's easiest. they must be taught things like work ethic, how to do things you can't be shown in school, and so on. you take your little bundle of joy to mcdonalds all the time and they don't plays sports, they will become one porky motherfucker. i'm not as active as i used to be as a little kid, but i'd still love to play soccer again. when the weather's warmer i'll skate a little more too.

I work in education, and have been troubled by what I see. 5th graders who count on their fingers to add, who can't do long division and their spelling and grammar are simply awful! By 8th grade nothing has improved! My 8th graders, as a group, have trouble adding fraction and they are expected to be doing algebra! Much as I hated it myself, I am beginning to think we should go back to rote learning with the kids chanting their times tables. America used to be tops when it comes to education- we are falling rapidly.
Schools are cutting art, sports and music programs. My school is filthy- the janitors mop the floors once a year. Floors are supposed to be swept nightly, but are not. Swings that were tangled by vandals three weeks ago, are still tangled. The blacktop is cracked in spots with cracks an inch wide. Cameras are everywhere, watching. School nurse and the librarian are part-time jobs. (I keep praying that if a kid does manage to hurt themselves seriously, the nurse will be at school that day.) Aides are a part-time job, so the district doesn't have to give benefits to them. Teachers are asked to deal with an ever growing number of undereducated students.
America the dumb is becoming a reality (why, just look who's the prez!). That is our future- a nation of fools concerned with the a Academy Awards, not the Nobel Prize; more into the Xbox than global warming; unable to do the simplest math without a calculator and unable to write without spell-check.

I think kids are doing just as dumb things as they are today. I can't tell you the stupid things and questions my peers had to do and say.
People can say common sense all they want, but in the end, everything we have know in life, we learned. We learned not to put our hand on a hot stove, what is right and wrong, and what IS common sense. We all learned what common sense is.
A lot of kids these days don't have direction from their parents. Rasing kids these days is very expensive, and the parents seem to take up most of their time working just to provide, so kids these days, aren't taught and have direction from their parents. You can't blame them, hell, if they don't know something, they don't know something, and they only way to learn, is to ask or watch and figure it out.
They do need to think for themselves though. It seems the media and music these days do the thinking for them. I know when I was young, I did a lot of thinking for myself.
So don't be so hard on the youngens. I mean, we were young once and asked stupid questions.
