View Full Version : House fire uncovers sophisticated pot-growing operation
Just a reminder of what can happen when you try to take shortcuts - this fire apparently started where they tried to tap into the electric power coming into the house. Looks like he had a lot of nice bud drying too.

sometimes I worry that this would be the ONLY way I would get caught, just because the house I live in is so hokey though not cause I'm trying to steal electricity.

Same here. The house I currently live in was built in 1957, cheapass military tract housing, I think they wired it with bread-bag twisties. Breakers trip on a daily basis, a good many of the outlets don't even work. I've had 3 system boards fried on my computers, and that's with good surge protectors. It's just a mess. I was terrified when I went out of town last week that the place would be a smoking heap when I got back. I'll be glad to move into my new house...built in 1913, but with all newly updated electrical.

Absolutely...fire extinguisher is a must!
But, unfortunately most fires would start when you are not there...therefore, you cannot do anything about it. Best reactive measure would be to set up a system that would alert your mobile if there was an increase in temperature above a certain degree.
Also, you can get a device to shut off your lights if your fan breaks and your temps go over a certain degree. That will prevent SOME fires.
BE SAFE, GUYS.

I would think the majority would just come from miswired ballasts and light setups. I have seen some really crappy wiring jobs in my day. Its amazing the things some people try to do

Yessir, deftdrummer...they have mostly been warned, but you can only lead them to the water...tinker with electricity at your own risk.

my place was built in 1880. some parts of the house have the original cloth wiring. don't ever be lazy and always use electrical tape. if u dont know what ur doing with electricity then u dont need to be growing.

Amen. I hate getting shocked, so I just don't monkey w/any of it. If an outlet doesn't work, I just move on to the next one that does.

Same thing happened to my neighbor. that shit was sad, he had some premo stuff growing. It was kinda funny though, cause our manager called him and told him that they found his crops.

It's not very expensive to change your breakers over to 30amp and that will be more than enough to run up to 2 1kw's on that particular line. I called in an electrician to change a couple of mine and used the excuse I'm putting in an electric kiln. This was years ago and haven't had a single prob or a tripped breaker since. It's not so easy for renters so check before doing it.

yes but in older houses u might need the whole box changed out and ur electrical re-wired which can cost thousands of dollars. adding new breakers is not the solution in every case, if ur allready pulling the max ampage from the breaker box and flipping breakers then its time for an upgrade.
