Little side story about raw fish

I went on a deep sea fishing expedition (48 hour) a couple miles off of baja california fishing for tuna. Anyway, this one guy that was with us caught a large yellowtail tuna. After he caught it, while it was still alive, he filet it right there and starting eating it. I am sure the heart was still beating.

I will most probably take a beating for that post. But hey, it was going to be eaten anyway. Plus, it was him, not me.

I've never eaten completely raw tuna, but it's really good seared a bit. you know, pink inside, and maybe an 1/8 of the outside seared.. ..good stuff!

I was watching a show the other night about survival, and this guy caught a trout, put it straight to his mout and took a BIG bite, lol! It killed the fish instantly, but GOD it was gross!

There is one fish that is a delicacy in japan,,,they say it is highly poisonous and if you don't eat the right part of the fish or someone that is not knowledgeable enough to make it right it becomes instant death... I saw it on the Food channel but the name escapes me now... it's beyond me why peeps would take a chance dying for sushi...

I tried Sushi and I hated it! It was like chewing on rubber, which I can see why the ladies like it so much. ;) Burn! Ha ha!

There is one kind I like sometimes though. All I know is that it is a crab salad of some kind, it's pinkish, wrapped in a thin layer of seaweed, wrapped in some tight rice. I like that, whatever it's called, but other than that, no thanks. :)

I like most types of sushi, but the one thing I don't care for is the texture of raw tuna. I can take the other, chewier, less soft fish, but somehow the texture of raw tuna turns my stomach. Other than that, I like most all of it. But it is awfully expensive. I get cravings for sushi pretty regularly.

You're exactly right. It's a really tough part of the fish to cut out and can only be done by an experienced pro with an insanely sharp knife. I catch blowfish all the time around the docks here and have heard of idiots trying to eat them and then dying. Supid bastard fish will bite anything in the water. Even had one get choked on my weight once.

Sushi, in all it's many forms, is possibly my most favorite dish on this planet and although the taste enhancing properties of marijuana does add to the experience in a positive way, I still enjoy it when I havenā??t smoked at all, just the same.

I'm thankful to my beautiful Asian significant other, for introducing me to these fine Asian delicacies. We hit the Sushi Bar at least 3 times a month on average.

I have fun showing off my unusually high tolerance to spice by taking large mouthfuls of Wasabi, itā??s always a crowd pleaser. Wasabaneros (wasabi on habanero peppers) much more so. :D

Has anyone else here ever tried Japanese raw beef? Like it's cooked minimally on the outside and is totally raw in the middle, and its cut into thin slices. I wouldn't recommend too much of it but it's worth trying.

Homer ate a blowfish once,remember??

"Directions to hospital on back of menu"

That one was classic. Probably my favorite Simpsons episode.

The thing about eating blowfish that is deadly isn't the fish meat itself. Apparently there is poison in it's liver (or spleen, appendix, whatever). If the guy cutting the fish up even nicks it slightly, even a tiny amount of the fluid can kill a person.

I love sushi though. There's got to be at least 50 sushi places within a 5 mile radius of me, that's not an exaggeration, so I go all the time. My wife likes to get the sashimi which is just raw fish, no rice or anything else, but I prefer the rolls. Spicy tuna and Spider Rolls (crispy fried soft shell crab) are probably my favorites but I pretty much like them all except for Uni and the big salmon egg ones.

The best thing when you're high is to go to one of the sushi boat places. That's where you sit at a long bar with a little river in front of you and little boats of various sushi float by one after another. You just grab whatever looks good. You just gotta watch out though as it's really easy to spend a shitload in those places.

LOL. Did anyone else notice that the sushi platter in post 1 are actually a bunch of USB storage keys?

In NYC Nobu is the place to go if you ever come to visit.
They are also in Malibu and Palm BEACH (?)

Chef Nobu Matsuhisa and Robert De Niro own the US ones.
I think they have another in Japan

When we go out for Yellow fin tuna off the shores of LI, we cut out cubes while the girls are still alive. Sometimes the Japanese will buy them right off the boat for $3K or more (depending on size) and ice them while they are still alive and ship them back to Japan.

Now I am hungry.

Wow, didn't realize so many mainland folk loved sushi as well! I live in Hawaii, which has close ties with Japan so sushi is pretty common here but i didn't expect it to be so huge anywhere else. My family is pretty big on sushi because we're Japanese, and man, authentic Japanese sushi is amazing! Now I haven't tried mainland sushi, but Hawaii is supposed to have the best non-japan sushi, but the most expensive sushi restaurants here don't even compare to the normal buffet style sushi bars in Japan, you can only begin to imagine how great the expensive sushi restaurants in Japan are if the bars are that great! The quality, taste, price, everything is just so heavenly. And referring to the Blowfish post, the fish is called Hugu, and I've tried it, I have to say I really really really liked it! And yes it can be deadly but in Japan all the sushi chefs are reliable so people don't even worry about it, if you get a chance try it.

There's a sushi place in town that I go to pretty regularly. Their house special rolls are to DIE for- there's one with broiled eel and avocado, with the reduced pan drippings from the eel as a sauce... HOLY FUCKING SHIT. Then there's a shrimp tempura and mango roll that is like cANDY.

As for the regular sort, Chirashi sushi ('scattered' sashimi over seasoned rice)is my favorite but NO RAW SHRIMP DAMMIT they taste like boogers.

And of course shredded seaweed salad with that sesame oil dressing... mmmm.... now I want sushi but the place doesn't open for another 3 hours, crap.

How ever the cali rolls are not the best, I dont even like em all that much. but I could easily spen like 80 buck just by my self at the sushi bar and the miso soup is da bomb.
