apparently anything over 18 hrs is more than the plant processes,so anything more is waste of electricity.and for your second question...there's really no such thing as too much light.

No one wants to answer you because you obiously haven't done any basic reading on your own.

But

You can leave your lights on 24 hr for the vegitative cycle of the planst life. Or up till its time to flower the plant. (Some do and some recomend giving the plants a break. If your using a Cab I would give it an 18/6 light cycle cuz its probs gonna get hot in there.

Add your hps If you like, more light bigger plants, but make sure that the temps are in the right area for that you'll have to read on your own. I would recomend using the CFls for Vegitative Growth and the HPs with the Cfls for flowering.

good luck

the more light the better but what are you using already???

if your using something like 400watts than a 70watt hps would be just dumb, but if its adding against CFL than its 100% worth it.

i stay on 24/7 through veg and then go 12-12. but i do this to regulate temps more than for the light...

yah see kp when i have the lights off in my box the temps will fall to 60 degreez farenheight, possibly lower. so i need to have my lights on 24/7. im using all cfls, gor now i got two 26 watt cfls and a 13 watt cfl. imma go to wal mart and get four 43 watt daylight cfls then im gonna get a 75 watt hps.

" Light Cycles

The dark cycle is very inportant to palnts. Respiration(this is when plants are making energy from sugar to oxygen) Continues in dark but at a much slower pace, almost independent of available oxygen because the leaves are not making oxygen in the dark.

In the dark there is a shift from leaf production to root production as the leaves transfer excess energy down to the branches and roots. Therefore, some dark time allows for better root structures. The "Experimental Root Growth 10 Days After Cutting" graph on page 33 shows that giving plants a 24-hour light cycle is not the way to supercharge growth"

This is from "How to supercharge your garden" With the graph on page 33 this follows...

"Light period for cuttings

PLants have a free running internal bio-rhythm of 21-27 hours. In this rhythm, they need dark time. Cuttings have a built in daily rhythm that they inherit from their parent. Cuttings will root better with a 6 hours to 8 hourdark period because this is the main time when leaves and the stems transfer energy down to the root zone for storage and growth."

The chart has hours of light per day on the bottom, and length of roots in millimeters.
-@ 4hours of light the roots after ten days were only 22mm long
-@ 8 hours of light after 10 days the roots were 25 mm long
-@12 hours of light we shoot up to 40mm long
-@16 hours it peaks at 50mm
-@20 hours it drops down to 37mm
-@ 24 hours it drops down to 29mm

There is also a shitload of info regauring root to yeild ratio vs veg to yeild ratio, and draws the conclusion that at the end of the experiements the root to yeild ratio was higher

I figured this could be useful to you.

depends on who you ask, I know this and still use 18/6

and i know the same, still on 24/7 with excellent results. kinda have to ballance the two evils...

if your temps get low like mine, i recomend you leave them on 24/7

yah like i said the temp where the box is can get to 50 degreez this time of year possibly lower so i think imma obligated to leave them on 24/7. then what do i do about the heat situatiobn when i flower?

I just have a cheap 15$ heater with 2 settings on a timer, it takes a bit of figuring but once you find the balance everythings pretty stable.

I kinda compromise and start 24, then switch to 18/6 for a week or so before going 12/12.

than k you guys so much for helping me, i really appreciate it. i think since my temp situation im gonna go 24/7 during veg and then while im veggin ill figure out someway to build a mini heating core to put on a timer for floweing. idk tho its been 2 days and my germinated seeds havent broke dirt, so i thre in a few more non-germinated bagseeds into the sdoil sorry im a little drubnk and rambling on..... anyh advice is really needed... this is my first grow people!!!! haha im gonna go watch my family guy dvd and drink some more gold schlager....

A little bigger than a telephone book. It doesn't have to go inside, even if you aim it at the box it will heat it.

yah see kp when i have the lights off in my box the temps will fall to 60 degreez farenheight, possibly lower. You will get argument on this, because technically growth does slow down, but I see no probleme with dark temps falling into the 60's, or even high 50's during dark. Mine regularly drop to mid 60's. Most strains being used commercially are indica doms, which come from a mountainous region where it often snows during the plant's life cycle.

thanks volker i didint know that. i thought plants would die if it got that cold. i dont know what imma do yet lol. i checked em this morning and one of em broke the dirt so its time for the lights to go on. part of the reason i wanna do 24/0 is cuz i dont have a timer yet lol.
