Hi, I currently only smoke rarely, I quit some time ago because of random drug tests from my job, but recently I had a bad reaction to some medication so I really want to look into legally getting marijuana for medical use. I live in California where it is legal, but I doubt my doctor is going to write me a prescription, and even if he did I would have no clue where to get it filled out.

I just heard on the radio that the DEA shut down many of these shops that filled the prescriptions, so I might be asking this question about 6 months too late, but I'm sure some will still be open. I'm not asking for a specific location, just a tip on how to find out more about these places and how to get the prescription.

I'm going to ask my doctor again and see what happens, but I doubt he will. Can anybody point me in the right place to look to get more information on this? If I have to I could always get it through my friends, but I would prefer going the legal way, (at least legal to the state that is).

Sorry if I sound like a straight edge douche, I use to smoke all the time throughout high school, but like I said, I quit because of my job. I don't think passing the randoms will be too difficult, and in my opinion it is well worth the risk!

Get AIDS. or cancer. Doctors prescribe weed to increase appetite. or something like that.

Hmm, I'll try, any side effects to aids or cancer? :P

I've heard on the radio, 97.1 specifically, that it is relatively easy to get a license for medical marijuana, Leykis had a topic on it the other day, and a while back one of the fill-ins for Conway and Whitman talked a lot about her friends experiences with medical marijuana. It sounds like anybody with any sort of "condition" can get it pretty easily. I figure if a guy with back pain can get it, why not me? I'm in no way trying to cheat the legal system with some minor condition, although I wouldn't compare it at all with cancer or aids, it would help me greatly and I'd prefer to go the legal route if possible.

But I might be a little late if the DEA is cracking down on these shops, which really sucks for people with AIDS or cancer that need it more than anyone else. From what I've heard, most people are abusing the system, and that isn't something I'd intend to do. I'd just like to live a little more comfortably and avoid ridiculous side effects to prescription medication.

Doctors.. That's your first step.

Talk to your Doctor.

Where are you from in cali exactly? The first step it to talk to your doctor for sure. Most doctors wont have a problem writing a perscription for you. They will also give you a list of locations to pick some up. I think norml has a list of locations too.

If your doctor wont do it, ask him to refer you to a "specialist". There are certain doctors who specialize in medicinal marijuana, and will write a script a little more freely as long as you have a referal from your normal doctor.

First off, it is a recomendation- NOT a prescription! You will want go to your own doctor and ask- likely s/he will refuse for fear of the feds. Next, ask politely for a copy of your records. After getting your records go to NORML and check out their on line list of cannabis specialists. Pick one. Get together $100 to $250. Make your appointment and bring your medical records. Pay the nice doctor. You are now legal for the next year. My doctor will not do recommendations for minors unless both parents (or sole custodial parent) sign a waiver stating they agree with this treatment.

If you can't find a source of clones or seeds, buy seeds on line. Best time to order seeds from a reputable seed company is around a "high level of mail" time (Xmas, Valentines, Mother's Day, etc)- less chance of being detected. I usually order around Xmas.- Granny:stoned:

I figure my doctor won't do it, which is why I'm asking here. Can the doctors themselves get in trouble with the feds for writing those recommendations? I thought they mostly just go after the shops that sell to MM users.

After I am legal, do I have to grow it myself or can I buy it already grown? I'd rather not grow, I really don't have anywhere in my place to do that and I don't think the landlord would care if I'm a legal user. One last question, any chance my health insurance will cover any of this? I am expecting to get a big fat "NO" for that, but hey it's worth asking lol

Move to Canada. That outta be your first step! I just got my medical clearance after 5 months of waiting for insurance and legal stuff to clear. I'm 23 and use is for pain control for chronic kidney stones. My doctor was happy to sign the papers when I suggested marijuana over narcotics. Don't get it straight from the gov't though, go through a designated grower or supplier. Flin Flon weed is shwaggy

Na way too cold up there lol

I did do some research though and found a doctor that will be about $150 if my current doctor doesn't give me the recommendation, and I also found a list of dispensaries in my area. One even sells hats and stuff online lol

The way it works in California is that you don't get it from the government, you don't even deal with the government. You just get a letter from your doctor, then you can either grow it yourself or buy from a dispensary. I also found out that the California Highway Patrol approved a new policy to not arrest medical marijuana users for possession, which is definitely a good move in the right direction!

I'm still trying to find out if I could get in trouble with my landlord for growing myself though, I know how much I am allowed to grow, but just haven't found out if a landlord has the right to evict me even if I am legally growing it under California law.

I get from a dispensery as well. Gov't pot is garbage. However, all our pot is tested through labs before it's passed on to members. All the grows are inspected and professionally contracted and maintained.

Nailhead, I too was wondering about the legality with the landlords if shit really hit the fan. I am getting my script in the next month. Basically what I think it comes down to is your lease. You signed a lease to live in your residence and that is a legally binding contract. If you were to be caught growing and it were reported to your landlord I am pretty sure they would have the RIGHT to evict you, REGARDLESS of what the state law says. Simply because of this: the state recognizes it as decriminalized yet the federal government does not. Given these circumstances, I am willing to bet most landlords would not be willing to take the gamble with your personal health problems etc. In other words, most leases state something to the effect of: "the use, sale of or production of illicit drugs violates the terms of this lease". They are usually very broad descriptions of drugs in order to cover their own asses. Just something to think about. On the other hand if your landlord was a personal friend or just a down right cool person then I would think you would have nothing to worry about. Either way, if you grow dont come out and tell them...obviously.
