Hello All,
I was diagnosed with IBD/Crohns when I was 14 years old and have had it since. I have tried every legal drug prescribed to me and have also had two surgeries to resection my colon. There seems to be a new medicine known as Remicade that is now out but Im really not trying to have someone inject me with mouse antibodies. To make a long story short I smoked bud back in grammar school but had stopped until I was in my twenties when me and a buddy went out and I smoked a joint with him and BAM! my pain and bloating had ceased. I have been smoking ever since. My fiancee refuses to believe what I tell her and insists that I just want to get high. Hell to be perfectly honest I dont think I get high anymore as its not the focus of my smoking. If anyone out there has Crohns then you know this disease is a real bitch to deal with. The pain, diahrrea, blolating, etc. all ceases when I get the THC in my bloodstream, so to answer any questions as to its medicinal value, yes it does calm the intestines and inner GI system by stopping the spasms of the colon and such. I also notice that nicotine does help as well but the bud is what really calms it and I can lead a somewhat normal life. I dont know the medical long term effects of the bud but I will tell you this, as long as it provides me some relief to Crohns I will be smoking it...LOL. People just dont know what its like to have a 24 hour stomach ache you cant get rid of.

If anyone else has Crohns I would love to hear from you, I only know one person who has Crohns and she is an older lady (about 65) but does not smoke, shes actually taking the same meds I was taking 20 years ago, some medical advancement huh? 20 years later and still no cure, what the hell is really going on? Crohns patients reach out to me, lets talk.

No...I don't. I wish you the best man. I have another gastrointestinal 'disorder'. I supposedly have a mystery allergy is the crap they've settle on. I've been to the alergy specialist and doctors and I've tracked my foods etc. Anyway, they think it's an alergy. Basically, after hours of stomach cramping and pain, I do the bowel movement thing, like my body is ridding of evil (always diahrea) and immediatly start hiving all over, then I go into
anaphylactic shock...and that sucks and sends me to the hospital sometimes. I've learned to deal with it in ways, but I find that if I keep cannabis in me, I don't have the problem. Sorry for the details...

Have you been checked for Celiac Disease? I have it, and many of the classic symptoms are similar to yours. Over 95% of people sick with Celiac, which is two to three million in the U.S. (1 in a hundred people), don't know that they have it. It's one of the most undiagnosed and misdiagnosed diseases in medicine.
Aso, are you really serious that if you have marijuana in you, there are no symptoms at all? If so, that's pretty amazing.

Hey man I've got Crohns disease too, and in fact I just logged on to find out about medical marijuana. I actually just had to take a day off work because I had a bad reaction to some medicine I started about a week ago, that is Prednisone. It felt like my heart beat was very weak, I couldn't sleep at all, my eyes were bloodshot and because it lowers your immune system I got a cold. After reading up on WebMD about some side effects, such as heart failure, I'm sure as hell never going to go back on that stuff! I still feel a little weird right now, I had to go to urgent care last night but I should be fine in a few days.
Anyway, I rarely smoke because I have a commercial drivers license so as part of federal law my work performs random drug tests. However, I'm thinking about learning a little bit more about how to pass those and taking the chance because after taking some medicine that could very well have killed me I think its worth it. I use to smoke all the time when I was younger, so I'm well aware of the side effects, but they are certainly nothing like what I've had to deal with this past week!
I smoked about a month ago and couldn't believe how great I felt, I always have a hard time keeping an appetite, but just a little smoke and I eat easily twice as much as I normally will with no stomach pains. I have been curious as to how it can help long term with Crohns, and I think I'm going to go ahead and try it out.
I live in California, where medical marijuana is sort of legal, (only by state), but when I asked my doctor he kind of laughed it off like I wasn't serious. I might bring it up again with a little bit more of a serious tone and see what he says, but I have a feeling most doctors want to stay away from that contraversory.
About how long have you been smoking? Have you asked your doctor about medical marijuana or is that not legal in your state?

just so you know, Crohns D is a medical cannabis Disease in Canada.
So you can tell that to your g/f
Also,
you said you dont really get "high"
the same effect occurs with opiates. You only get high if you are not in pain. If you are in pain morphine or w/e acts only on the pain and you dont get high, you just dont feel the pain. (unless you take more than you need)

Man its good to hear from everybody.
Breuk no I have never been check for Celiac, I will defintely do some research tonight, and yes when I do smoke one I can actually feel my insides relax and the symptoms slow tremendously. With me what happens is the intestines become inflamed and when the food passes by the inflamed part it creates the pain. I have had two surgeries so far, one to resection my colon and when they went inside they said it was so inflamed they ende up giving me a temporary colostomy bag. I was only suppose to keep it for 6 months but I ended up keeping it for a year and a half. That was the best thing that happened to me. Hell after surgery I gained 30 pounds in one month, although the 3 hots and a cot all day long had a lot to do with it.
Nail, man I know that prednisone will do that to you. My face blew up like a balloon and I had the munchies constantly. I was also taking Librax, Asacol, Flagyl(Metronidazole) at one point, Xanax at night to counter the prednisone so I could sleep, and Azulfidine. I have to get some prednisone now cause mine has been bothering me since last week and the smoke I get here aint been that great lately. Gotta better blend coming soon though. I have been back to smoking for about 5 years now. My first smoke was at 8. Found a roach of my brothers and lit that puppy up. Man that shit had me so zooted I sat in the corner of the room scared shitless to come out cause I thought my grandma would know. I started really at about 15. I did notice that my symptoms slowed but shit I was scared to tell the doctor I smoked weed..LOL. I stopped at about 17 and didnt start back until 5 years ago. Far as I know it's illegal here in IL.
Harris I think mine flared up this time cause the stuff I had lately was crap, and yes you are right, the THC seems to go where its needed. Think I'm going to try my hand at a grow box somewhere at somebody's house with some quality fem seeds, but I need to do a little research to see if there is any particular strain that is good for this. I need to be halfway uncooked cause I run a business from home, but I also need a nice amount of THC as well.
Damn 420iz, you go into shock? Man you have it bad. Watch your diet too. Stay away from milk and dairy, they'll have you locke up tighter than a bass drum. Try to stick to baked or broiled stuff and definitely no cabbage, nuts, or seeds.
If anyone has heard of any particular strain that is good for this let me know.

Khoa, Michele Rainey is also posting frequently at treatingyourself.com , a medical marijuana site. It's a very good site for mmj users. 420iz, I have a similar problem. I vomit, cramp, hot and cold sweats and so on. And I know what causes mine! SODIUM BENZOATE! The doctors decided it was my gall bladder, even though I was only 26. Fortunately, I read Prevention magazine. There was a gal with the same mess, but she had already had her gall bladder removed since HER doctors decided it was her gall bladder causing the trouble. Well, she still was getting sick the same way! So she began an elimination diet- removing one chemical at a time from her diet. When she eliminated the Sodium Benzoate---BINGO! no more trouble. I tried it and no more trouble. Unfortunately, it can be in wine, for an example, without being on the label. It is found in some sodas, salad dressings, candy, all sorts of prepared foods. You guys might want to try eliminating some of the chemicals in your diets- give it a week or two, might help, won't hurt!
For the studies on Crohns/ IBS and cannabis, there are a LOT of them- just google it! I put in a 10 hour day at work (2 part-time jobs at a school, with only one 20 minute break to gobble down lunch- not a "as usual" day) and I'm just a bit too tired to do it for you all today. - Granny:stoned:

Storm you are right. After being in the hospital I could only eat bland foods for a while and I didnt have as much problems. Diet does have a great deal to do with it. I know I love ice cream but cant eat it or any dairy products. Its a trial and error thing for me, if I find it doesnt bother me to eat it I usually stick with it. Sometimes you just need to not eat solid foods for a day or two and eat a lot of ice to cool your intestines, and give them a break.
Khoa, I did see something with her name in a google search I did last night but havent delved off in to it yet. I definely will.

Wanted to post on this thread and say that my sister has crohns too. She does have a medical marijuana card here in California. It does help relax her insides alot. The pain medications that they prescibe are strong, I think she is on percoset and sometimes oxycontin. But when she smokes, she can take alot less of those drugs.

420izzle, Breukelen is saying some very true stuff about the celiac disease. Scientists are even finding that excessive gluten (mainly wheat) intake is bad for anybody's digestiive tract. I went till the age of 20 not knowing I had it. When I started consuming a lot less gluten my brain didn't feel so fogged and confused, I didn't feel exhausted when I woke up in the morning, the dark circles under my eyes went away, and my digestion stopped being a bitch. Though weed also definately helped all that oddly enough, it seemed to sort of help organize my thought processes in a more efficient way.

Sorry harris, but I have my doubts about that. I'm in shit loads of pain every day, all the time, and I can honestly say Tramadol still gets me high. I never use it for the purpose of getting high because I don't want to fall into opiate abuse, but I sure want it for the best pain relief I can get thus far. Anywhoo, tomorrow I'll be trying morphine in a low-medium dose with *cough* a doctors prescription I just got today, so I'll let you know if it still affects me mentally. I get the feeling it will though.

Hey man, just so you know the strain is Very important.
This is something the government hasn't realized yet.
I dont know anything about your specific problem but i know that some of the active chemicals work very well for certain things and others do nothing.
For someone on Chemo you want a nice strong indica, because it's the CBD that makes you hungry and sleepy which is what there looking for.
I'd totally check out michelle rainey, she knows whats up. She's got her medical card and i'm sure she's got her hands on a very very good selection of bud over the years, so she probably knows whats up.
If you shot her off an email i'm sure she'd get back to you.
check on Cannabis Cultures website.

I haven't been check for this and I will look into it as it's plagued me siince I was 16. Thanks. And, yes, I'm serious about if I have MJ in me I at least alleviate the symptoms most times. Say for example I start getting that feeling - hives coming on, itching in ears like an allergic reaction - I smoke (vape) and take a tums and claritan rapid-tabs and I don't go into anaphylactic shock.
Interesting on the gluten and sodium benzoate....I will certainly start watching for these chemical in what I eat. Thanks mrdevious, storm crow and Breukelen advocaat!

Hy 420..All is good here..workin on a grow box over here..gonna be 24"deep x 48"high x 48"long. Im gonna finish the blueprints for it tonight and hopefully can scan the drawings and post them. This may take a few cause I dont use my scanner too often and it gets me all fucked up. Its just an image scanner for pics, etc. Yeah 420 very good info here, and also got some news that Strawberry cough is suppose to be good for CD. Think Im gonna try that and some others. Anything with more THC has got to be better than the crap I have been getting. I get lucky here and there since I have a buddy that goes to L.A occassionally and somehow brings goods back with him and he'll give me some. Im still in the creation stage here cause I want mine built to order for my living situation as smell and heat would definitely be a problem in a 3 flat building and im on the second floor with no venting.I'll figure it out though. If I can figure out whats wrong with GM cars when GM can't Im sure I can handle this. I will put the drawings together and post hopefully tonight. Im building everything from scratch myself. I refuse to pay for something I can build myself as I do construction work on the side. Hell my favorite store is Homie Depot, with them I can make anything from anything. Hmm..I see botany in my future..LOL. By the way, anybody here a botanist or got a degree in botany?

If you have been diagnosed you really want to have regular visits with a Gastrointestinal doctor (GI doctor). This is not something you want to ignore or pretend it isn't a big issue! (trust me, I try to ignore it but it never goes away lol).
If you are having blood in your stool you should see a GI doctor as soon as you can, if you wait too long you could end up with a colostomy bag. How much you need would probably differ from person to person, but I find I feel best if I smoke twice a day, but if you are not having a flare up you might not need any at all. You should search this forum for help on passing drug tests, there is a lot of very informative threads that can help you with that. Generally indicas are best for Crohn's, but as for the specific strain, well, I know Michelle Rainy loves her Afghani bud, but I've read a lot of good things about Grand Daddy Purple...which I have yet to try, hopefully will get some soon so I can test it myself :D

Hey Tryna I have Crohn's Disease too. I am unfortuneally doing the remicade. I'm actually allergic to those mouse proteins in it. I've been smoking for about 2 years and it is the only thing that helps with the pain. I told my Doctor what I was doing and he said to keep doing the remmicade also even though your allergic to it. So it sucks.
