It's nothing particularily new. Many people have "proven" the bible by it's "astonishingly accurate" prophecies. Unfortunately, many of the prophecies are things that are a) vague b) inevitable to happen at some point, and c)open to interpretation as one sees fit. Here's some listed:

I'm certainly no expert on the Bible, but from what I have read it is basically saying that we are all imperfect sinners, including many of the "leaders" in the Bible. They didn't talk with a condescending tone to others, so I don't understand why church people do that to others.

Christians should spend less time worshiping a stupid book and more time being nice to others. I stopped going to church because I simply don't see the purpose of going to a building where everyone pretends they are a good person, then once you get in the parking lot everyone is ready to run you over with their car to get out. It also seems completely hypocritical to claim being a Christian, but support wars. I'm not saying I'm against the war on terror, Iraq, or any of that, I'm just saying true christianity is letting evil people kill you. I really can't stand the "typical" Christian that calls other people sinners, it says somewhere in the bible to not do stuff like that yet people do. I've asked myself that at times too, and sometimes swear off all this discussion.... Then I see people perpetuating horribly infantile logic to make it acceptable in the masses minds. It bothers me that most people are kept in ignorance, not regarding religious beliefs, but by the fact that billions of people are indoctrinated with the belief that the most rediculous logic is reasonable, or you can throw logic entirely out the window with this nice euphamism called "faith", which essentially means "if I believe in it hard enough, convincingly enough, that will make it true".

It bothers me, to the core, because we continuously keep humanity in a state of ignorance where true critical reasoning skills are never taught or understood by most. And because most people don't develope solid critical thinking skills, we continue to have massive injustice on this planet with things ranging from schoolyard bullying, to unjust wars, to a public that's easily manipulated by deceptive politicians who can twist their minds in the direction of their bullshit, to unjust policies like the war on drugs, to suppression of minority beliefs, to every subject that people have been bullshitted on and convinced to believe. Religion is one of the biggest and most influencial ways that we condition our minds to keep ourselves from utilizing our incredible intelligence. It turns open minds into narrow views, it keeps us from questioning everything, it keeps humanity from the ultimate goal of understanding our universe and existence to the fullest extent and solving our problems of our own accord and ingenuity. Religion has been a major hinderance to human progress throughout all history, even most theists would have to admit that.

If the voice of ignorance is the only one people hear, that's as far as most will think, which is why I debate on the small hope that somebody will read these arguments and have two sides to consider, and hopefully balance them with reason and intelligence.

My problem with this thread is the interpretation of prophecy is not a valid argument for the bible being real.

When I saw this thread I was hoping for either a historical argument. Yes the bible is a historical document. The names and ancestries can be traced in history.

Or I was looking for a personal argument on how the bible changed someones life on a meaningful way.

I am not against Christians. In fact I think some of the ideas on morality can help and guide people. Most Christians I believe are good people.

What I do have a problem with is people who use fear and guilt to spread their propaganda.

For you Evangelistic Christians out there: No one will no the time. Remember "Thief in the night". It is in the bible look it up. I shouldn't have to tell you where to find it.

If the bible works for you in your life. More power to you.

Ie- peer review process, public criticism and so on

the creatures he mentions are taken mostly from greek mythology. the old testament predates that by a large margin. so the meaning of the hebrew word that was used, is not based on greek culture and mythology, but hebrew

you have to think clearly about things here, cause and effect. i have studied some biblical hebrew, and i'll try to find the actual words he mentions. i hope you understand what i'm saying. if you don't, then we can't go on before that is understood

you can't interpret ancient hebrew with classical greek images. and you certainly can't interpret modern english TRANSLATIONS with greek mythology. this is just bad thinking. you've got to use that brain. think hard.

listen folks, there's a lot going on here, in this book called the bible. to throw it out the window as "fairy tales" is pretty silly. we're talking about 66 books by some 40 authors, with different styles, different histories, different lives, spanning a period of thousands of years.

the reason we have all these books retained throughout the millenia is that they were highly prised as the word of God by the jews, copied with incredible standards, and prized above all else. this is why copies have survived from long ago, in excelent form.


a few things you should know:

1. what books should be in or out of "the bible" is the subject of some debate. for instance, the catholic church uses an extra section of books between the "old" and the "new" testament usually known as the "apocrypha". modern jewish believers do not accept the "new" testament as the word of god, nor jesus to be the meshiac (messiah). the old testament is known as the "tanach". it contains the torah (books of moses, 5), nevviiim (prohets), and the ketuviim (writings); they are also in a different order than used in the protestant or catholic bibles

2. the old testament (i hate the terms "new" and "old", and jews certainly don't consider their tanach to be the "old" testament, but you'll bear with me for consistancy) was written mostly in hebrew. there is also some aramaic. the new testament was written in koine greek, or "common" greek. it was the language of the roman empire and required to be learned by all. this facilitated it's availability as most people knew koine greek as well as their own language. much of th new tetament are letters written to various churches by apostles and other folk

3. ok, so what do we have today? do we have any original manuscripts? the answer is no, we don't. anything written that long ago on papyrus or reeds, or whatever, is long since disintegrated. what we do have is COPIES of the originals, or more likely copies of copies of copies. not translations, copies. there are a number of different texts. for instance, i have two hebrew bibles. one is the biblia hebraice strutgardensia (commonly used version). another is the biblia hebraica leningradensia. that copy was found in leningrad russia, i forget when, but not terribly long ago. you also have something like the dead sea scrolls which was an unbelievable discovery. something to note is that these copies are not identical. what this means, is that one, or more, have errors in them, errors from the original. different bible translations use different texts to translate from, and they also use different styles of translation, from very literal (say NASB, or KJV), to very .........well...flowing and figurative, such as the NIV. and i'm just talking english here. however, it's important to note that thought the copies we have are not identical, they are very close, and the differences generally do not change the meanings of the text, but are very minor. so, either some of these manuscripts have errors, and some do not. there have been folks for example that believe the textus receptus (used for the king james bible) is the accurate one, and the others, such as westcot-and-hort are errorful. people differ


even if you handedly throw out all the miracles and stuff like it, you still have lots of important history in the "bible". these are some incredibly old documents, and there is much that can be learned from them. whether you believe them to accurately show who God is, is up to you.

i'm ready for the answer. we all are. the truth is, no body knows for sure. that's the eternal problem. it always will be. we believe different things, we may even think we know, we may believe very strongly, but we haven't seen the other side of this life, and we haven't seen God.


I do not need an infinite knowledge of the universe to know that religion if nothing but psychological delusion. I can prove that there is no such thing as a spherical cube, simply because it is impossible for one to exist. Using the same principles I can prove that the God described in the Christian bible cannot exist. The bible has great stories, and Jesus was a cool guy but what the poor book lacks is any actual evidence - which is what matters.
