You are about to turn 18. What you got was a SSI forum. Fill it out and if there is a draft you may get called up. Every US male at 18 must sign one. And its also needed to be filled out if you wish to vote. In the draft order 18 is the last pick. 20,21,22,23,24,25,19,18

Calm down there bong, just because someone doesnt' want to be in the army or agree with the draft doesn't mean he's an extreme leftist flag burner communist. I know you don't agree with socialism or most things left, but these people aren't maliciously out to destroy us. I'm just wondering, I remember you said that you had some professor who gave some really convincing arguments that all things socialist and left are wrong etc etc.... but did you have anybody of equal conviction giving arguments for it? I've always believed you can't truly know an argument is right unless you look for a counter argument and hear it out too (with real consideration).

You probably wouldn't believe me, but I know the living standards here in Canada are higher for the middle class than in the states (overall), and there's considerably less of a rich/poor economic gap. The only arguments I've heard against socialism from you suggest that ALL use of socialism has to be in the most extreme, often communist terms. Your argument about the "profit motive" mainly applies to communism, and you're using it against socialism which has no such extremes of flat-wages where it is used in sensible moderation, such as in Canada, Holland, Germany, and partially Sweden (Sweden gets a bit carried away), and more. Anybody can take an example to extremes, but in reality it's the subtly necessary components of many societies that account for good living conditions and services. I'm a student and a broke one at that (can't work physically anyway), and I just got surgery on my nose so I was able to breath through it for the first time in my life..... and walked away with no bill. I never would have been able to pay that without our socialist medical system, just like my family wouldn't have been able to pay for my sisters many necessary surgeries, and my younger brother's psychiatric care. It's at least nice to know the guy on the bottom can get some help getting education and healthcare and a chance to get to the top.
And yes, I know our medical system has some major problems (so does America's, but the problems are different), but that's the result of not taking a more sensible partial socilist approach of government funded hospitals that are free, with the option of privitized hospitals for those who can pay. They've made good use of such a system in a few European countries and they have the top medical systems in the world.

I do not think that there should be a draft. We could have a highly paid, professional army of super-SEALS, Paratroopers, etc., that is more effective.

Afghanistan, for instance, after 9/11, was handled all wrong. We should have sent unrelenting soldiers specially trained to hunt down and kill Al Quada and Taliban - and not stop until bin laden and his monkeys were all captured or (preferably) dead. They want to inflict terrorism? Then we have to give them back 10X what they did to us. The bombing of Kabul did nothing. Pattern-bombing the mountains, continuously, near the Pakistan/Afghanistan border would have been a better idea. Better yet, we could have dropped a few nukes in the mountains where they hide, right after 9/11, and then denied responsibiliity for it. Fuck 'em all.

What rock have you been under? They are doing that now .... and as you can see .... well most of us anyway .... it makes matters worst, because they follow no law .... who do you think is responsible for the torture at Guantánamo and Abu Ghraib?

HAHA. Your right. Just some dumb MP's abusing their power and being a little sadistic too.

To the initial poster, fill out your card and send it back. It dosen't mean shit right now. If you get called up and have to serve then you can plan your get away. But now, dont bring attention to yourself.

It freaked me out a bit when I got my card too. That's just the govt's way of letting you now they're watching you and saying "Happy Birthday!".

I'd be pretty concerned if I was 18 now and got one of those cards. I'd be more freaked out though if the big switcheroo on Capital Hill hadn't gone down. No way the dems would now allow Bush to start up the draft. At least not for his little Iraq fantasy. There would have to be a real, and immediate, threat to the country and, in that case, it would be worthwhile.

It would suck to have to go fight in this war. No doubt! The only way the draft will start is if we add another battlefront or 2. Right now, the volunteer service is enough. Can you imagine being a National Guard. You would be like "I thought it was only 2 weeks a year" "I just wanted some college money"

i get called by recruiters..and they hyperspit at me then slowly go..."now do you have any mental conditions that require medication?"..i say im bipolar..and then they go "oh im sorry but the army cant offer you anything." then ask if i can give them my friends phone numbers who might be interested..
i respect the army and part of me wants to serve..but the war sucks..im torn..
my friend is active and is a support staff nurse in HI..he gets great benefits and great pay...
they tell me if at some point i dont need meds to contact them...

i think its funny how they aggressively say all this shit...then you need meds and they say "oop sorry bout that..."

a female friend of mine attempted to go into the navy and she said her recruiter, after a background check, called her 'broke'..

im not afraid of the card/war i just dont find any good reason to be in that country, but now that we have "killed" their ruler we have to be there now. i just think the whole thing is pointless. even people in countries not affected by the war think its a waste

MPs might be sadists, but torturing prisoners for information comes from higher up the ladder. In most cases it was either CIA operatives or Civilian contractors that were doing the torture. The "conspiracy theory" is bullshit. The Government covered it up and threatened those Enlisted MPs with long sentences if they coughed up the truth. I know how the military works, been there done that, and have seen quite a few mistakes covered up under threat of reprisal. If you're an enlisted man, you eat shit on a daily basis and would not think of commiting an act of torture without permission from above!@

They have no right to force you to fight. Man, if they try to, do the peaceful thing and come to Canada. We have our problems but we're not fascist (although if Harper and his Tory assholes aren't gone by the next election, I'll be scared)
