Explosives were triggered but failed to explode

Using an explosive mixture of hydrogen peroxide and chapati flour, six would-be suicide bombers with "an extremist Muslim plot" intended to carry out a terror strike on London's subway system just two weeks after a wave of attacks killed 52 people, British prosecutors told a London jury on Monday.

The shrapnel-wrapped devices were triggered on three London Underground trains and a double-decker bus on July 21, 2005. However, they all failed to detonate, the court heard. It had been "simply the good fortune of the travelling public" that no commuters were killed that day, prosecutor Nigel Sweeney said.

"This case is concerned with an extremist Muslim plot, the ultimate objective of which was to carry out a number of murders and suicide bombings," Sweeney told a jury of nine women and three men at Woolwich Crown Court in southeast London during the first day of the trial
