My daughter came home and told me this today. I can't believe I have never heard of this.

Gelatin (US spelling) or gelatine (British spelling) (used to make Jell-o and other desserts) is made from the boiled bones, skins and tendons of animals.

The gelatin you eat in Jell-O comes from the collagen in cow or pig bones, hooves, and connective tissues. To make gelatin, manufacturers grind up these various parts and pre-treat them with either a strong acid or a strong base to break down cellular structures and release proteins like collagen. After pre-treatment, the resulting mixture is boiled. During this process, the large collagen protein ends up being partially broken down, and the resulting product is called gelatin. The gelatin is easily extracted because it forms a layer on the surface of the boiling mixture.

gummy bears
sour cream
cream cheese
cake icing and frosting
marshmallows
soups, sauces and gravies

Gelatin is even used to make the coating for pills that makes them easier to swallow. It's also in cosmetics, lozenges, and ointments.

I've known this fact for a while... I watch Alton Brown,,,LOLz...

Make chicken soup with just breast meat and make it with the whole chicken... Put both in the fridge and you will see the whole chicken one will be gelatin while the breast meat one will still be liquid...

I don't find anything wrong with eating animal leftovers. I'd rather eat that than some genetically engineered, artificial something or other that could cause who knows what later in life. Why do you think cancer is more present these days> Look at the foods we eat.

Hotdogs are made from various animals scraps, and that lipstick you ladies use is made from whale fat, along with a lot of the soaps we use in the shower.

What's different that using melted down animal skin in foods opposed to eating a rump roast from a cow? Yes, a rump roast, their ass. :p It's all dead animals in the end, and if eating a burger doesn't bother you, I don't see why this should.

Yuppers. Same as Skink. Mr Brown explained it all to me one time. I'm reading through his book now (I'm just here for the food).

Have you ever ate some ribs or a slow cooked pork chop? Yea, that lick your fingers goodness is the gelatin from the bnones and connective tissue.

There are different kinds of vegetarians. I am an OVO-LACTO VEGETARIAN. Which means I don't eat meat but I do however eat eggs and dairy. Then there are your pescatarians who don't eat meat or animal flesh but do however eat FISH. Then there are your VEGANS who don't eat anything from animals, like honey, eggs, dairy, meat, fish, etc. However there are different vegans too, some will even go as far to not wear leather, etc. Some will eat honey. Everyone is different, not necessarily hypocrites.

I have known for a long time that gelatin is from animals. I have been a vegetarian most of my life, and my dad is an asshole who is always trying to make me mad. One day I was eating jello and he was like "You're not a vegetarian if you eat Jello" and I was like..what? Then he told me, and he even went so far as to make me look it up in the dictionary(yeah hes weird)..

Luckily there are gelatin substitutes that are not from animals. Like Pectin. Anyway, makes sense I guess, or something.

But yeah don't go throwin around the word hypocrite unless you know what you are talking about.

If i'm not biting into the live animal itself, then the meat is just a different physical representation of various vitamins and energy.
If the animals (like people) could tell us that they preferred their bodies to remain uneaten after death, then I bet most people would turn into vegans.

theres traces of blood and PUSS in your milk too

if you eat oscarmier/maples/frenches etc. hot dogs your most likely eating assholes, lips and testicles(jk, they cut those off, could you imagine though) as well as other scrap meat that was shoveled off a floor of a processing plant.

which is why im slowly merging into the organic vegetarian lifestyle, but i love pizza and chicken wings so darn much.

Yes, I pretty much only consume organic. You can have organic vegetarian pizza....sooo yummy. We have 2 organic pizza places where I live, so lucky. If I do drink real milk(which I usually don't) I will always get organic. However I try to stick to soy/rice/almond milk unless I am using it to cook with. I try to not eat that much dairy, but I am not going to go out of my way to avoid it. I really like cheese and ice cream. My mom can't eat wheat, soy, dairy, or gluten...so it's always rough around the holidays for us hahaha.

Organic rocks. If you're going to eat meat it's best to always eat free range organic meat. As with anything though really.

If we werent so modernized and we still had to hunt, skin, drain the animals of there blood, mutilate them and hack them apart to get the desired meats, A LOT more people would be like you, some just dont know the cruelty and disgusting acts that are followed through just so they can wrap there hands around there greasy, 99 cent 1/4 pounder from macdonalds(provided they use real meat in their food)

Ive quit eating red meats so now im down to chicken and fish, and i tried eating vegetarian pizza, but it just wasnt the same...this is probably as far as i will go though, being a vegetarian is a lot of work, and no one accomodates for the veggie.

Well good this would be a pretty boring place if everyone agreed, but I didnt say everyone, i said a lot more, the majority of North Americans buy there meat from grocers or butchers, if there were neither of these establishments the number of people eating meat would go down that I am certain of.

I am fortunate enough to live in a very unique community where most all restaurants can cater to almost any dietary restriction. In fact, it isn't considered odd, weird, or out of the ordinary at all. Sometimes I find it odd when I meet people who do eat meat. I am lucky.

I don't even know if it was necessarily the cruetly factor to animals that made me decide to be a vegetarian or not. I just got this horrible feeling everytime I ate meat and everytime I found a tiny bone in my meat. Freaked the fuck out of me, I didn't like to know that I was eating something that used to be alive and habiting the earth...I just couldn't get past the texture, it was too hard for me to eat meat so I just naturally became a vegetarian. I rarely find it to be difficult, and I really don't think I will ever eat meat.

You know I always thought gross shit in food like that was horrible. But seen this way, that's true man. I don't think rotting pig bones in the soil helps out our marijuana plants growing any healthier. By using hard learned knowledge from millenias of experience, we found ways of putting things to better use. It's not true with everything, don't get me wrong, but a lot of technology like that is actually good.

This example though, is not very valid of this point, lol. All the shit gelatin is used in is rather horrible for our healths anyway.

Meh go figure.

i think it would have a lot to do with were you live. for instance i dont think too many people are going to be hanging a pig from the street lamp in brooklyn new york. but then again if someone in my area couldnt go to the store to buy pork chops, i dont think it would cause to much concern.

I'll still eat stuff with gelatin in it, I realy don't care. I have met some a few vegitarians that were al right, and I have met some PETA members that are complete jack asses. Hell the guy that introduced me to weed was a vegitarian, not for the "suffering of the animals" (that were breed for that specific purpose) but because he just didn't like the taste.

Really? craziness well here in my part of canada vegetarianism is made fun of and looked down upon, and most vegetarians are fat emo girls who are just trying to be different.

Where are you at? (general area) We have 2 veggie restraunts within an hour of where I am that i know of. If you go over to a friends house and eat dinner with there family, some type of meat is always the main course. So right now i just find it easier and more practical to go about my way of life. O and the cruelty is mostly the reason i am the way i am, i think a cow should have the same right to live as a dog does or any other animal.

Don't expect food companies to tell you what is exactly in gelatin. Yes it is from an animal. They usually say that it is either from beef or pork because food companies get it from different suppliers so it cant really be tracked.

I'm always amazed when people are floored by vegetarians. "how? why? Don't you miss meat?" If you really want to understand why vegetarians don't eat meat, try it for a month. If you're not convinced, go back to pounding big macs. Its your life afterall. And our life is our life. Diet is a choice.

Having said that, vegetarianism is totally a better choice. At least for me. Probably for everyone.

Oh, I know, it is pretty gross when you really get down into it. First, I am not against vegetarians or meat eaters. Most, if not all, were born to parents that ate meat. For me, it has been a hard thing to get away from. It is just so EASY (call me lazy if you want, cause it is true in this aspect) to just get a burger if your hungry or a big fat carne asada burrito w/extra onions. Meat fills me up and it taste good. I know there are plenty of benefits of not eating meat.
So, it is hard to switch.
My daughter wants to start eating vegetarian badly. So, I might pretty soon start getting it all together. I am sure I can do it. I just need to figure out how to shop for it and make some good recipes.

Well, I was thinking more alternatively you should try eating organic free range meat? It is far better than antibiotics and hormones. If you are interested in becoming vegetarian you should see if you have any local food cooperatives around you, they usually are a really good place to start.
