Pelosi Snared in Wage-Hike Tuna Net

Republicans say there??s something "fishy? about the House Democrats?? minimum wage hike, which exempts employers in American Samoa ?? site of a StarKist Tuna packing plant ?? from paying the increase.

What does StarKist have to do with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats? StarKist??s parent company, Del Monte Corp., happens to be headquartered in Pelosi??s San Francisco congressional district.

"I am shocked,? declared Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Va., who pointed out that Pelosi campaigned on promises of honest government. "We find out that she is exempting hometown companies from minimum wage. This is exactly the hypocrisy and double talk that we have come to expect from the Democrats.?

The House on Wednesday voted to gradually raise the minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.25 by 2009.

The bill includes, for the first time, employers in the U.S. territory of the Northern Mariana Islands, but it exempts American Samoa, another Pacific island territory.

More than 5,000 Samoans ?? nearly 75 percent of the island??s work force ?? work in two packing plants there, one operated by StarKist Tuna and the other by California-based Chicken of the Sea, according to the Washington Times.
Some GOP House members who voted in favor of the wage hike bill didn??t learn until after the vote that the legislation did not include American Samoa.

"My intention was to raise the minimum wage for everyone,? Rep. Mark Steven Kirk, R-Ill., told the Times. "We shouldn??t permit any special favors or exemptions that are not widely discussed in Congress. This is the problem with rushing legislation through without full.

After the exemption came to light, Pelosi said she had asked the Education and Labor Committee "as we go forward with the legislation to make sure that all of the territories comply with the U.S. law on the minimum wage.?

She also said she has never received any campaign contributions from Del Monte.

In addition to the Del Monte-San Francisco connection, there is a link between the company and another prominent Democrat: Following a 2002 business deal, about 75 percent of Del Monte stock is owned by shareholders of the H.J. Heinz Company ?? whose heirs include Teresa Heinz Kerry, wife of Massachusetts Democrat - and failed 2004 presidential candidate - Sen. John Kerry.

You dems are just as bad as the Repubs.....

Damn, man we need a NEW party! We need to get some of those other little parties to unite under one umbrella dedicated to getting the crooks and crookedness out of our government!

And how come Bush & government representatives are getting away with deals for profit? My local police station tested me for drunkeness when I tried to file a complaint! (I wasn't, but they still wouldn't file a report, which is how I figured I could get charges pressed).

I like HOPE, but that's already taken. REFORM party has a bad connotation to outright communism. Any other suggestions? Altho registered as independent, thinking maybe should join American Independent? If someone doesn't come up with some NEW good idea...

Since there is no real difference between repubs and dems, us in the Green Party call them, republicrats.
we dont put people in office,......, the media and special interests groups do.
Now they want to use voting machines that leave no paper trail of your vote.
Its sorta like going in a store, buying a high price item and not having a reciept for insurance incase anything is wrong with product.
You spend 80,000$ on an item you damn sure make sure you get a reciept.
Our vote must surely be worth more than an item bought in a store..., isnt it?
Just say NO to voting machines.
Just say NO to republicrats.

That's a bit of a paradox no? Why would the most powerful man in the world make his first priority the happiness of a bunch of average people who he has so much fun manipulating?

how about voting for the people who do have our best interest. they are few are far between, but they're out there...

one of them is running for president, republican from texas Ron Paul. Ron Paul is a real republican, a constitutionalist, not a big government commie/fascist neo-conservative like lord bush.

http://www.house.gov/paul/

when everyone knows that no one is voting for the criminal republicrats...and they still continue to win (because they own the voting machines)...like in other dictatorships...hopefully that will wake people up.

What a joke. America Somoa is a third world country in the South Pacific.
Meanwhile back in the world of reality, the Republicans had been fighting a min wage increase for the last 6 yrs.

Did you know that socialist societies have significantly higher rates of entrepreneurship?

Market forces are important but they need a nice strong leash on them.
Essentially the rule of thumb is, Pay as little as you can and change as much as you can.

This economic system looks real good under the GDP from of measurement.
Too bad that only takes into account money. I guess that??s why the US likes it so much, it makes your country look good.
I wonder how it would look if economists came up with a more sophisticated formula taking into account environmental pollution/degradation, quality of life and poverty for example. Things that really matter in a society.

In America the top 1% of society has as much wealth as the bottom 90%.
Does any amount or work, investment or intelligence justify making millions of dollars a year?

you have no idea of how a free market works.....

I??ll give you a little free market in action?

Lets take the US Health care system.

Per capita spending on health care in the USA in 1001 was 5274 international dollars.
Which is about twice as much as Canada spends (2931 IND)
The biggest difference is that 43 million Americas don??t have health coverage.

Now that??s free market efficiency in action

Maybe you??d like it in % of GDP
Since Canada has a much lower GDP than the USA, it looks a little better

USA 14.6% of GDP
Canada 9.6% of GDP

I guess all this inefficiency and waste makes the US GDP look good

The problem with capitalism is that it lacks a social conscious.

Commerce's #1 goal is to increase share holder value/generate profits, so ANY initiative that cuts into profits gets the run-around.

The role of the government is to step in and be the social conscious when commerce fails to self govern, which combated via lobbyists.

The US should take over healthcare and tax any company that does business, or has a business in the US. It should tax all commercial real estate holdings, this way the burden is shared by foreign investors.

IMO the problem is the huge profits.

With such large pockets it isn't hard for very few individuals to affect the opinions of the weak minded. as they do.

It's so funny listening to what a lot of people have to say. Like how some things are bad in principle.

I hear it day in and day out in BC. We have a public owned auto insurance company.
I see letters about it all the time, Bla Bla Bla government monopoly.
No one seems to realize that a monopoly is only bad in the hands of a capitalist whos purpose is to make money.
Unlike a public corporation whos purpose is to supply a service to the population,
Which it does at the 3rd lowest rate in the country, after two other public companies.

we need a new government in general. its so corrupted its not even funny. i mean think about it why are 3rd world countries "3rd world" because the US sold them expencive shit that they dont need and put them in poverty. also alot of 3rd world contries have the natural resorces to feed their own ppl. and think about it , why is US money really one of the biggest currency rates in the world. the only currency i know of that might be higher is euro and that is becauce of the illumanti propaganda. i mean this country has been fucked up since day one.read about the free masons guys. u guys wanna blame bush, ok. well has anyone ever played metal gear solid (sons of liberty?) what if there was a higher power that were pulling strings. bush dosent look that smart to pull of the NWO (new world order) and the US also funded bin laden. gave him billions of dollars. and bin laden is a ex CIA tactical expert.also why is it that the government could arrest me for talking bad (patriot act), and we have freedom of speech. i mean what exactly is the government hiding? also how is it that they could find me in the middle of the desert taking a shit and picking my nose all the way from DC, and the US is a big ass country, when they cant find one man in one of the smallest countrys in the world? because they are letting him run. i mean it was all part of the plan. bin laden helps blow up the towers and bush starts the NWO gets rid of a tiny persentage of the population, and sets fear in everyone else. and bush lets bin laden go free. i mean they found saddam in a god damn hole for gods sake. why cant they find bin laden. and as im typin, i realise somthin else. another reason they used bin laden is so when they "search" for him the US already has men over there to move in to IraQ to take over and pipe out the oil.shit is crazy. and just for talking about this watch me get framed for drug charges then killed in jail. i mean we gotta read ppl.
