View Full Version : How US forged an alliance with Ethiopia over invasion

I thought this was an interesting article in the Guardian...

On December 4, General John Abizaid, the commander of US forces from the Middle East through Afghanistan, arrived in Addis Ababa to meet the Ethiopian prime minister, Meles Zenawi. Officially, the trip was a courtesy call to an ally. Three weeks later, however, Ethiopian forces crossed into Somalia in a war on its Islamist rulers, and this week the US launched air strikes against suspected al-Qaida operatives believed to be hiding among the fleeing Islamist fighters.

"The meeting was just the final handshake," said a former intelligence officer familiar with the region. Washington and Addis Ababa may deny it, but the air strikes this week exposed close intelligence and military cooperation between Ethiopia and America, fuelled by mutual concern about the rise of Islamists in the chaos of Somalia.

Pay special attention here --->Pentagon officials and intelligence analysts say a small number of US special forces were on the ground before Ethiopia's intervention in an operation planned since last summer, soon after the Islamic Courts Union took control of Mogadishu. Press reports have said US special forces also accompanied the Ethiopian troops crossing into Somalia.

Oh and here is a surprise... "In return, the US is believed to have provided the Ethiopians with arms, fuel and other logistical support for a much larger intervention than it has previously mounted in Somalia."

Funny how the Plan for a New America Century seems to be falling into place...

Glad to see this happening. As WE HAVE TALKED ABOUT in here something had to be done about the genocide. The Somalian Gov. asked for the help from the Ethiopian Gov. who then asked us for minimum personel and weapons sales for the operation. :smokin:

How many troops, probable a good share of ours, was the U.N. ready to send to Somalia. Somalia stated that this was an African thing and that the U.N. was NOT welcome to the show.

Why did you feel the need for the spin?

You always state you want our people safe? How can we be informed about special ops missions? This is what were doing, where we're going........hell, just let them get prepared for the attack! Unless of course you feel that the genocide in Somalia is no longer any concern of ours....

US strikes on al-Qa'ida chiefs kill nomads
By Anne Penketh and Steve Bloomfield
Published: 13 January 2007
The herdsmen had gathered with their animals around large fires at night to ward off mosquitoes. But lit up by the flames, they became latest victims of America's war on terror.

It was their tragedy to be misidentified in a secret operation by special forces attempting to kill three top al-Qa'ida leaders in south-ern Somalia.

Oxfam yesterday confirmed at least 70 nomads in the Afmadow district near the border with Kenya had been killed. The nomads were bombed at night and during the day while searching for water sources. Meanwhile, the US ambassador to Kenya has acknowledged that the onslaught on Islamist fighters failed to kill any of the three prime targets wanted for their alleged role in the 1998 US embassy bombings in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam.

The wanted men are Fazul Abdullah Moham-med, Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan and Abu Taha al-Sudani, who were all supposedly sheltered by the Union of Islamic Courts during its short reign in Mogadishu.

The operation, which opened a new front in Washington's anti-terror campaign, seems to have backfired spectacularly in the five days since it was launched. In addition to the scores of Somali civilians killed, the simmering civil war in the failed state has been rekindled.

Yes the Christians were there...it is really sad but the US Military has been using Christianity of lack of to invade for a long time.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A watchdog group that promotes religious freedom in the U.S. military accused senior officers on Monday using their rank and influence to coerce soldiers and airmen into adopting evangelical Christianity.

The Pentagon (http://search.news.yahoo.com/search/news/?p=Pentagon) punishes those who do not accept evangelical beliefs by stalling their careers.

"It's egregious beyond the pale," said Mikey Weinstein, president and founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation. "We apparently have a radicalized, evangelical Christian Pentagon within the rest of the Pentagon."

Then there is this wonderful group...

http://www.forceministries.com/ WOW I can see Jesus in his camo now!

They are going into predominately Muslim countries not for Humanitarian aid but to spread the Christain agenda/US agenda. These guys go in and then bring in the missionaries to SAVE the sinners and if a few gets killed WE hear about it constantly its good for the exspansionism

We are suppose to believe this is the Christain thing to do. I know it is bullshit and it is US domination dressed in Christain garb.

BC, you twisted it again...... you bad girl.

i see that you agreed about the cristains were there first, but then you just went on your anti america rant AGAIN.

ethiopians drove them out of town....

Maybe they are more worried about being ethiopians than christians?

[edit] Conflict in Somalia (2006)
This article documents a current event.
Information may change rapidly as the event progresses.

Main article: War in Somalia (2006â??present)
On Sunday, December 24, 2006, Ethiopian forces launched airstrikes against the Islamist Militia across Somalia in support of the weak Somali interim government.[27] Ethiopian Information Minister Berhan Hailu stated that targets were in Baidoa. This was the first use of airstrikes by Ethiopia, and also its first public admission of involvement in Somalia. Initially the Ethiopian government made strong denials of this fact. [28]

Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said on Sunday he was waging war against Somalia's Islamists to protect his country's sovereignty, adding that: "Ethiopian defense forces were forced to enter into war to protect the sovereignty of the nation and to blunt repeated attacks by Islamic courts terrorists and anti-Ethiopian elements they are supporting" [8]

^^^^^^they are ethiopians before christians.....the word sovereignty gives it away.^^^^^^^

On Monday December 25, 2006 Ethiopia declared war on the Islamic Courts, and Ethiopian jet fighters bombed the international airport in Mogadishu. [9] Ethiopia, the United Nations and most Western nations do not recognize the Islamic courts (UIC) as the Somali government, backing instead the legitimacy of the transitional government. However Eritrea is accused of supporting the Islamic Courts Union in Somalia

Yes dear I am more worried about the Ethiopians than the Christians because the Christians were not there first. They went there to save the heathens and change the present culture. Just like you want to do. Reform the Muslims.

It seems you think all of America has gone to the evil liberals. Our newspapers, our newly elected officials are all wrong. We are the bad people here in America.

You have more concern for the Iraqis and reforming them so why don't you leave and go where you can really get sumthin done...Go put your little sweeties in that wonderful new american tax dollar school in Iraq you and Psycho brag about..git er done son.

You help Africa with food, schools and medical aid NOT WEAPONS that is NOT really a true Christian thing to do. I know this is a hard concept for you to understand because politics has distorted your view of Christ. YOU MIGHT TRY reading the New Testament...

Imagine how much we could help Africa and our OWN country if we were not spending.... how much is it now...it grows by 200 million each and every day and will soon surpass 1 trillion dollars...1 TRILLION DOLLARS

You understand that much money could provide free medical care, housing, food and paid education for every single American in this country and there would still be money left.

Where do your loyalties lie really?
