beckham can fuck himself, he left man utd and fucked of to real madrid for money and now hes gone across the pond for even more, its not about football any more just money, and the sad thing is he gets payed more than people like doctors and scientists who actually make a difference in the world unlike him who gets payed $1,000,000 a week just to kick a ball for 90 mins. fucking pisses me off and he only has 2 braincells

i think he'll attract more attention for the sport of soccer in the US. and his wife will attract a lot of attention in the tabloids. i like soccer and its a shame that the US is not very competitive in pro soccer. maybe beckham will help to change that.

First of all, this thread is in the wrong forum.

2nd of all, I don't think many people really care. I don't really even think he will become that popular of a sports figure. Sure, if the media makes a buzz about it, it will be in the news, but that doesn't mean real americans will care.

I understand he is a huge name across the pond, but over here he is going to have to compete with the tiger woods/dwayne wade/kobe bryant/LT/Reggie Bush/Yankees.

When americans watch sports, we like to see scores. Soccer might be fun and all to play, but watching two teams chase kick chase and score ~3-4 times in 90 minutes, that is boring...no matter how beckham can bend it.

I have always thought about soccer in this way:

If we could tailor the game to where there was more scoring, it could become popular in america. I have seen alot of good soccer plays that make sportcenters top 10....which look awesome, but the game is slow and boring.

Lets say that a 100pt basketball game is entertaining. There is approx 35 field goals made per game (per team)

Lets say that if we counted each goal as 1pt.....but changed the rules so it was easier to score (whether it be field size, spacing req).

Imagine watching a soccer game with a final score of 15-17
I would watch it and probably like it.

Hockey is too slow...neat to watch but too long and not very productive.

Baseball is fun to play but it too is too slow and not enough scoring. A good baseball game is when both teams have double digit scores ex/12-13

Why couldn't they do that for soccer? (and yes i understand soccer is worldwide, but we don't much care for worldwide sports in the US anyway)

I can't stand footballers because they are a bunch of overpaid whinging fuckers.
Beckham and his praying mantis looking other half should fit right in with the superficial LA jetset, but even Pele couldn't get the yanks to watch footie and Becks is barely a pimple on Pele's arse.

soccer, futbol, football, etc. idc is my favorite sport.
David Beckham.... is honestly not very good at all and im not trying to cramp up his style but what does he do on the field... nothing besides take free kicks, he doesnt set up any combinations, no line drives, doesnt dangle defenders.
he basically takes up the place that a better player could be in.

Are you crazy?

Although David Beckham hasn't played for the team I support, he has had me in awe at his abillity.

You need to give your head a wobble if you don't think he is any good at what he does. How do you think he has earned his megabucks deal? Do you think you can play a pinpoint ball to another players head/chest/feet while the ball is either:
A, moving
B, plyers are trying to intercept the ball
C, players trying to hack him down
D, the wind blows a gale

All from 40 + yards or so?

I don't think so. This is why he has been offered megabucks, because he can, and he has done so consistantly for 15 years. As a bonus, he can score freekicks too, as well as the odd goal from the halfway line.

If you still think he is crap, go watch gridiron then.

Be fair to the person.
yes he is not as great as a footballer as the media made him out to be . It did help him that he married post sign on the dotted line spice.
but with one kick England qualified for the world cup in JAPAN .
Before that kick he was vilified in the press & everywhere the were hanging effigies all around.
why because after being fouled re retaliated with a slight nudge to one off the hardest players at the time who made it look like Tyson knocked him down with an upper cut.
people can't seem to make up their minds about beckham.
He has helped the game many times over if its about racism, football academies, charity work, plus on a good day football genius.
as for leaving MAN UTD. Well I do not think the manager left him much choice.
After the boot in the face affair.
He works hard at what he earns.
It's his right to decide which contract to accept.
If the club thought he is worth that kind of money then so be it , it's them paying it.

By the ways I support spurs, but I love football.
TO THE USA thats soccer.

SOCCER as you call it is more than a man's game mate.

Lets break this down....

Soccer is whe we call it here, yes very good.

More than a mans game? I am not going to debate soccer Vs football they are different and diff people like diff things...

MATE...I am not your mate, my MATE is at work, and is way hotter than you. Thanks

your poor excuse for football how can you call that a game when all you get is stoppage when you move the ball an inch forward .

See Holligan, when you say, you dont like stoppage, you are saying chess is stupid for the same reason.....WRONG, football is more like chess, you have diff playes on each side of the ball. Soccer does have set plays it is more of an ebb and flow game...

our game is 90 Min's .45 each way.and it's continues play .
no quarters no time outs .

Uhhhh how long is the half break? can you sub in soccer? Yes Please I know the rules.....

its a mans game hard tackles no shoulder pads, no eye make up to make us look mean.

Ok, it isnt to look mean. it is to bring light out of your eye, onto the black patch benieth your eye....

They wear shoulder pad and helmets and tail bone pad, and thigh pads and knee pads.....CAUSE FOOTBALL HITS ABOUT 10000% HARDER THAN SOCCER.

we have the whole team out at once not half & half. American football. don't make me laugh.
I know the rules...thanks again. Soccer dont make me laugh

soccer as you might see it is a kids game .

It is here in the states...sorry to break it to you... I even played it as a kid, it was fun.

American football as i see it's for people who want work between the adds.thats why you have all that stoppage.
NO once again....it started as a Mans MAns game, but then the realized the money to be made with adds.

I like college football the best....it is even more raw.

I like going to the high school game around my town and watching the kids play...it is the best.

So tell me about the adds at the high school football game. Humm?

Like I said.... It is different here in the state. It is Soccer.

Beckham moving to America was basically his only way out of Spain. He wasn't seeing jack for playing time anyways. But there's no way in hell he's worth that kind of money. No one is. The MLS is just *really* desperate for something, or someone rather, to jump-start their league and make it as close to a success like all the other leagues overseas.

They must be REALLY desperate though, to shell out that kind of cash for a player that is past his prime...playing wise...but for modeling underwear....shooooot...he's not done yet.

He will be good for the MLS though, because if there's one player any kid in America even remotely interested soccer knows, it's David Beckham. Yes, lol, there is an "H" there...for the birth mother/father of this thread. But Becks will draw in the cash, in the meantime tarnishing the rest of his reputation and hopefully being labeled the coward he is. Why not stay and tough it out, Becks? You'd rather have a fat check to hand over to your plastic wifey-poo. I just hope I don't have to hear too much of his girly, whiney voice, because no one should have to go through that. Frickin' nancy-boy is what he is.

And as far as the whole hooligan scene in Europe, I will admit it's been out of hand for some time, but who really is going to stop a bunch of drunk idiots fighting and yelling at each other? I know I'd be embarrassed to be associated with ingrates like that at the games, giving both football and my country a bad name. But when your country is known for its intoxicated citizens, that usually doesn't mesh well. It's not that hard to stay away from the sauce until after the game at least. There are players pushing for changes though, so that's always a step in the right direction. Drunk rowdiness isn't really something for Europeans to be proud of, yet some are. ~

if you read carefully youll realize it is a fiftymillion dollar contract. which for the mls is huge but it is kind of annoying how they are making it seem like the biggest deal ever when 80% is paid in endorsements and not by the team. this has been tried before with soccer. people are interested in beckham but not beckham the soccer player. better players than beckham have been brought over before and the soccer leagues still went under. the only question is whether the mls will last the length of his contract

Well actually, Pele' made his way to America and played for the New York Cosmos back in the day, and the league was a pretty big success for a while...then it went under once he stopped playing.

And really, teknonra, I don't know how you can say European football ISN'T out of hand. Come on matey, look past your ego and open your eyes. Instead of bashing America with no real point made, look at what's happening. If you think black players having bananas thrown at them isn't out of hand, there is ZERO class across the pond, which I know isn't true. Generalizing American's, or anyone for that matter, also shows incredibly bad taste on your part. And that would be a good idea for England to start their own world championships, because that's the only way they'll win a cup anytime soon. A VERY poor showing this last WC if you ask me. 11 guys all playing for themselves, and it showed...

I'm glad to be an American, but I'm a fan of football. ~

It's the ultimate in freedom and creativity. 11 men vs. 11 men, all working together. Teamwork at its best, really. That "kick chase" you refer to is definitely what it's like to watch, but if you understand and appreciate how a team builds up an attack, it's more than that. Basically, you have to have a passion to understand why it's the world's most popular sport. It's so graceful, and so poetic at times. Players putting one-twos together, as the ball flows so smoothly down the pitch, as each player touches it. Then, if one is lucky enough, we see a goal come from a great piece of skill. Great players make the game a lot more interesting, too, and there are plenty of players to catch your eye.

Soccer isn't about the scoring. It's about the passion and total team effort to overcome the opponent. It takes 11 guys to score, not just one. It's poetry in motion, literally, and some of the talent is mind-blowing. Things they do with the ball are left only to fantasies.

It's just so freakin' amazing to watch and/or play. No sport compares, to me at least. ~

they are kickin a fucking ball made of rubber and air..well i guess its not made of air..but any ways its a sport not poetic and shit if i really try i can make the last crap i took sound poetic.. and as for scoring there is only one type of scoring that matters in the real world is "poetry in motion"

Were you the one that was always picked last in gym class?

Lol, o/j mate. People like it because its a challenge. Some people thrive on challenges, and its a battle of skill (by the players) and tactics (by the managers). Its a simple(ish) game to play, but because its a worldwide game, its very popular. It keeps you within good level of fitness, and also passes time. It induces a team spirit, and if you are really good, you can go ahead and make money from it.

I noticed somebody mentioned something about racism, and racism has NO place in football at all, its disgusting. However, listen to this, its a spin-off from bananas on the pitch:

A good few years ago now, there was a well known clown that used to play footballl, Paul Gascoigne. Anyway, he was better than David Beckham in his prime. But he had a reputation for being a bit of a jooker. If you knoow anything about him, you will know that in a match between Spurs and Wimbledon, a footballer called Vinny Jones (yes he has had a stint doing acting and was in a film called Lock Stock). Anyway, during the match, Vinny was photographed grabbing hold of Gazza's balls, and the comical expressin of pain on Gazza's face was funny.

However, Gazza being Gazza, couldn't let it lie. A few days later, he sent something to Vinny in the mail. I can't remember exactly what it was, but i am thinking it was a toilet plunger and some chocolates, and no love was lost between them.

The story i want to mention originally was the fact at one game Gazza was playing, the opposition fans decided they would all through Mars Bars on the pitch at him, as he had a bit of a reputation for being a fat bastard. What did he go and do, to make light of the situation? He simply picked a Mars Bar up off the floor, unwrapped it, and started eating, to the fans delights. The whole place was in stitches.

I have long since lost the original point I was making, but there are some really funny, good stories included in football, as well as some tragedies, which include Hillsbrough. May all the poor souls that lost their lives that day rest in peace.

What difference is there between footballers ,hockey players or for that matter any sportsman ? The point of sport is either to entertain or just to show who is best, it still requires skill and determination to reach the top of any game/sport.

I think the use of the word Football to describe the American version is wrong for many reasons.
The ball spends more time in the hands of the players than at thier feet.
The name was already being used for the original game .
It would be like taking baseball which everyone recognises as it is and developing a whole new game and saying you know what I'm going to call it baseball.
The idea of calling football soccer is stupid, it's FOOTBALL !
I don't like the name television so I'm going to change it to microwave, the microwave will now be known as a Viewing box. Doesn't work that way does it.

it is totally stupid to call soccer a pussy sport because there is not as much contact as in football. if that were true then basketball and baseball and pretty much all other non contact sports are not manly gmaes.
bodybuilding is where its at!!

Rugby is a place in Warwickshire. That's where the sport was invented and gets its name from.

but no rug contacts the ball. its fucking ridiculous i mean the word rug is right there in the name but there is minimal rug contact to the ball. oh my god what an outrage no rug is touching the ball but it is in the name of the sport. call football shitball for all i care it is still the best sport there is

Rugby has already been explained to you so I won't bother with that , however your lack of understanding of what a language is forces me to point out the obvious.
A word has to have a specific meaning otherwise we would never understand each other, you can't just go switching the meaning of words around it just causes confusion and a garbled language.
The Dutch call a horse a PAARD now if you walked up to an American rodeo and said "thats a beautiful paard" the person you were speaking to would wonder what the hell you are talking about.
Football - A game invented in England therfore I would say that when the Americans invented thier girly version of Rugby they should have known better than to use the name of an existing and very different sport.

Simple enough explanation of why words need a meaning that identifies ?

no. it's called rugby because the first time it was played was in the town of rugby
