View Full Version : Internet taken for granted?

I was browsing the web reading some articles, streaming videos, and streaming music. Anyway it occurred to me, the Internet is actually incredible. I know this is an obvious statement but one that isn't brought up very often. I have the Internet to thank for a lot of things, like learning about countries, meeting people from other lands, politics, economy, general news, art, music, and anything I have an interest in really. I'm not saying we are dependant upon the net or even should be since nothing can compare to the "real world" but I'm very thankful for the Internet, it's certainly unique and something special.

Yes. I think we all take the internet for granted. I also think that 60 years from now, our grandkids will be learning about the internet in school like we learned about electricity.
We'll be like "I remember when you had to buy some paper, pens, envelopes, and stamps just to sit down and write a letter to be sent and wait a week for it to get there" They'll be like, "yea right grandpa, like people had to wait for email and you had to buy porn in stores, you're so full of it"
if they could somehow get those star trek replicators hooked up to the net, it'd be all over and done with. I can only dream : paypal my guy some cash, and check my email for my nugg attatchment.

Lmao! That last idea was brilliant. I have to say that sort of thing has crossed my mind before.
I understand what you're saying about us being Gramps and explaining how "In our day" we used to do things the hard way.......lifting a pen and putting it to paper? Lol.

The internet, enabling human beings for the first time in history to instantly communicate knowledge and ideas around the entire world. What do most people use it for? To watch porn and to ask some chick they've never even seen if she swallows.
Along with the automobile came the reckless driver. Along with the airplane came the hijacker. Along with the telephone came the telemarketer. Along with the television came... well... just about everything that's on television. Along with the internet came the hacker.
For every great invention there is a great fool who fucks it up.

So very true, doesn't mean it isn't good or ground breaking though as I'm sure you agree ;)
No matter what people will be jerks, I'm sure if we were apes still you'd get your assholes.

That fool is the guy who creates viruses and spyware. The guy who steals credit card numbers and identities. The guy who makes it necessary for the rest of us to invest a constant stream of money into keeping him out of our computers. And the guy who cheats at video games and takes all the fun out of playing them.

I'm kinda sick of your inaccurate assumptions about me. If you don't want to read what I have to say, then put me on ignore and stop whining about it.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that fool is also the "script kiddie" who by himself doesn't have the skills to fuck up other people's computers, but he can still use malware that was created by other people.

I tend to think greed is our fatal flaw and cruelty is a byproduct...
prettymuch every medicine we make causes another problem,,,we need to stop destroying people with medicine...
Now, keep in mind Skink, that you are supposed to be the optimist and I am supposed to be the pessimist. Yet I am the only person on this entire website who does not believe that human beings are doomed to self-destruct and to destroy the world along with them.
I believe there is actually a very likely possibility that human beings are here to serve a specific evolutionary purpose, and we have great things in our future.
Yet you have the nerve to call me a "defeatist."
You are a self-righteous, arrogant ass. Not to mention a hypocrite and a very poor judge of character.

I feel the same way. I was lucky to know life before and after the internet, and I remember how difficult some things were, and now all you have to do is click your mouse. I find that incredible.

The same thing can be said about cell phones. Especially now that they're really starting to combine together (check out the new cellphone stuff from CES at http://www.cesweb.org/default.asp). It's odd watching kids wander wherever they want nowadays. I can remember having to plot my entire night ahead of time knowing where the working phones would be at and have quarters. Now they have maps with blips, picture text and video messages. It's unreal.
