Jedi Takes on Jabba in the Hut

This is my first grow. I am growing feminized seeds from Female Seeds. I have 2 Grapefruit and 3 Ice. They are in a Hydro Hut under a 600W Hortilux bulb.

I commited mistakes along the way. I popped the first seeds on November 18th directly in Rapid Rooters. That was my first mistake. I should have sprouted the seeds before placing them in the RR. I don't know if it was just my seeds, but they seemed to be stupid. For some reason the roots would grow up towards the light, instead of down into the RRs. I ended up having to sprout 5 of each strain to end up with 3 of the Ice and 2 of the Grapefruit.

After I thought they were ready, I made my second mistake. I put them into a DWC setup. Wow, what a battle. I fought algae and pH for a few weeks, and finally said, "I yield." Hydro just isn't for me. I transplanted the girls to Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil in 2 gallon pots on December 5.

After that, they grew like weeds. (Yes, I can hear your groans.) Soil suits me much better. I love the smell of good, rich soil. I spent my formative years in Iowa, so I know good soil.

I then made my next mistake. I fertilized too early. Note for FF Ocean Forest users: You may not need ferts until flowering, at least in my case I didn't.

Well, in any case they have survived my blundering fert burns. I transplanted them into 4 gallon pots on Christmas, and put them into flower 3 days later, December 28.

Hey Jedi, your grow looks sweet!! I'm wishing now that I had gotten the reg. HH instead of the HH mini - the extra space would come in real handy right now. Six plants in my mini is too crowded - five in yours and you still have excellent light penetration and room to branch out. The plants look nice and healthy too. It doesn't look like you topped yours so the extra height in your hut may be a bonus too as those plants may get huge on you!!

Some folks don't like to top their plants but I'd rather keep them a little shorter for better light penetration. I'm still learning LST'ing and wasn't going to try it my first indoor grow!

Anyway, good job, keep up the good work! :thumbsup:

LST ftw. Stop by my thread sometime if you wanna see some multi-cola monstrosities caused by LST. Lol, I tried it my first grow, as soon as you tie one plant sideways and see how it reacts, there is nothing left to learn. Everything else is preference.


But yah jedi, fuckin nice plant man. I wanna see some fat nug shots man, tell them girls to hurry up and flower already :joint1:

Well, Doco, its funny that you mention that about the HH. I originally ordered the Mini, but they didn't tell me it was backordered when I placed my order, so they ended up giving me a great discount on the fullsize model. Damn that bitch takes up a lot of room! So long office!

As far as the topping goes, I accidentaly topped one of the Grapefruits with a role of duct tape when I installed my cooltube. So I FIMd the other Grapefruit so I could see the difference between the two. Now I wish I had topped the other three, because the all-sativa GFs are shorter than the 1/2 sativa Ices. Oh well...

3 weeks into flowering, and I am fairly pleased with their progress. Just wish I would have topped all 5. Although, originally I wanted to leave them all in their natural state to see the natural growth firsthand. Thank goodness I accidentally topped one of the pure sativas, and then FIMd the other. Otherwise I think I'd be having a major verticality issue by the end of this grow. Still might...

It's amazing how much they grow during flowering isn't it? I think the stretch is over for mine at 3 weeks now and it should be for you soon too...I think you'll have plenty of room for your wonderful ladies. Looking awesome!!

The advantage of having the bigger HH is showing in all the budsites you have Jedi - mine is too crowded and the light can't get to the lower branches like yours can. Nice sugar on 'em too!!

Well, fellow cannabytes, I apologize for my lack of updates on this thread. I've been pretty busy, but I vow to update more frequently as they finish up.

Perhaps controversially, I trimmed the ladies' bottom third at Day 36 of flowering. Had my first puffs of cannabis since August...:abduct:

Looking great Jedi - our grows so similar - I just started mine on water & molasses too for the next couple of weeks. How did they take to your cutting off the bottoms? I was thinking about it and I did snip a couple that were obviously never going to amount to anything but only a few...I was worried I might shock them into going hermie if I chopped off too much.

Doco, I had the exact same worry about them going hermie, especially since these were grown from female seeds. I have kept a diligent eye on them with close daily inspections, and it has been 6 days now without a sign of balls. I have however seen a better plumping on the girls. Whether this is due to the clipping or just natural for this stage of development I'm not sure, but I'm inclined to think it's the clipping.

I was ping-ponging back and forth about clipping them, trying to digest all the conflicting therioes out there. My main worry was hermaphrodism, but I read a post by an experienced grower on another site that comforted my fears. His point was that all plants are designed to take loss of limb, especially at the bottom of the plant, because that is where the critters gnaw on them. So why not divert the energy away from the useless wisps at the bottom and toward the fattening colas at the top? Makes sense to me, but this is my first grow so I don't really know jack...

Looks great Jedi, nice work! You have a lot more secondary growth than I do, thanks to the space you gave each of them.

I harvested my C-99 Monday night also and I basically got four branches - the two mains and the next set of internodes...the rest were just little tiny buds that I just tossed in the hash trimmings. I learned a big lesson - less is more. From this point Ill never have more than four in the HH mini...more that that and they don't get much secondaries 'cause they are too crowded for light penetration.

Anyway, looks like you've had fun over the last few days. I love scrapping the resin off the trimming scissors afterward!!

This is my first ever harvested cannabis. Her name is Gertrude, and she was harvested Monday, 2/19 after being in flowering since 12/28, 53 days. She was born on 11/18 and yielded 35.9 grams. She is a Female Seeds' Ice and was jarred yesterday, 2/24. She has a nice heady skunk flavor already, can't wait to get a whiff a month from now! Thanks to all for viewing. More later.
