I'm a little amazed I've never seen this discussion, but what do you guys think of say a C-13 cabinet being a fire hazard? Do you guys worry about the cabinet catching on fire? What are the risks exactly? Does mylar act as a retardant?
I'm the nervous type, which I prob. shouldn't start growing anyway, but I don't know if I could leave it in peace when I know the light is on some 18 hrs a day. Perhaps I don't know enough about HPS, which I've planned on a 400w unit.

they are actually rather safe as long as you have proper cooling in the cab, most people cabs run about 75-85 degrees which is far from fire hazard.
if you havent a clue how to wire up a HPS light yourself just buy one already assembled and it lessens the risk even more.
mylar isnt flamable, well atleast dont think it is.

if your really that cautious, you could look into the fire extinguiser systems they use in race cars...

Kitter,
Whats the "C-13" reference for cabinets?
I would like to make my own cab and am looking for a 72" tall cab but cant seem to find a shell at a reasonable price. The Caddy is a nice set up and the more I read the more I feel that I can put together something like it for a lot less.
** Anyone know who makes the cab for the Caddy? I am guessing its not whom ever sells the Caddy setup **

I've never heard about a fire but I do hear about those needing to keep the door open of slipping in frozen bottles of Gatorade to keep the temps under 80 degrees. I imagine that if it gets too hot you can simply increase the size of your intake / outtake fans which are quite small in the pre-fab setups

hewhispers-the c-13 is a product model number by Mill's Pride, see here, http://www.millspride.com/media/pdf/stor_prodcatalog.pdf. These can be picked up at homedepot in the states. Also, Target sells a California Closet model that is almost exactly the same, for a lower price, and perhaps a sturdier cabinet.
Try picking up a nice sized wardrobe secondhand, that would work.

Anything you plug into the wall is a fire hazard. You hear 'bout them xbox 360's that blew up? And... xbox 360's sad to say dont even grow pot?!?!
Just use your head use some common sense. Keep the light cool. Keep it away from flammable things, etc. Keep water away from electricity. Ja know ja know?
