i decided to whip this up real quick, already had the stem from a hookah i made so i just stuck a glass bowl on top and sealed it all 100% with tape. cut the bottom off a 2lt bottle and got a pitcher of cold water with ice cubes floating in the bottle. for the downstem to bubble the water level on the outside of the bottle needs to be below the bottom of the stem.
