View Full Version : Motorcycle Riders?

I've been riding MCs since the mid 70s. It's been a lifestyle for me. Used to be my friends were all about motorcycles and partying. Things slowed down a little with age. lol
The motorcycle I ride now is a 1982 Harley Davidson Wide Glide that I bought in 1984. I used to spend time and money building HP and drag raced from the late 80s-90s. Now I'm back to just putting around and partying once in a while.
Any people here like to ride MCs?

Woot!
I have a girl-sized ricerocket that I put 25,000 miles on in less than 3 summers... I live in New England... summer isn't that long... then the odometer stopped working... that was BEFORE I rode the 'yellow vibrator' around the Great Lakes in August!
This is my little screamer- I have a much nicer helmet now... and a much nicer bike is in the plans too!

Mmmm and I must say the bike is shall we say a more... um... satisfying experience than he ever was? :D

I am still on the lookout for a RUNNING YSR 50 mini crotchrocket!!! I would so love to have one to just tool around town on in the summer. There's a Honda pocket racer for sale at a local dealership but it's WAAAAY out of my price range and not even street legal yet. Crapola.

Had a dream that I was riding her in the states and she broke down. For some reason I had a second one that was in better shape. She needs some tender love right now, oil is leaking and some coolant aswell :-(
Might be moving to UK so would have to sell for that reason.

How many of you guys are hardcore bikers ?
I mean people like myself who will ride whenever they get the chance, the kind who refuses to stop riding even if it means removing a plastercast from a broken wrist after only two weeks.:o
Rides in all weathers, even if I do have to lean so far into a side wind that the bike is at 45 degrees and I'm only trying to go in a straight line :(
I will be honest and say that I've scared the shit out of myself on more than one occasion and extreme wind and cold do make me think twice but I hate cars and I will never use public transport.

Yup that's me... never had to take a cast off, knock on wood, but I've ridden in all of it... hail, snow, blinding rain, the most violent lightning storm I have ever SEEN, let alone been out in... and I had to ride the Springfield MA and HArtford CT highway overpasses during it too trying to get home... lightning striking the guardrails... no visiblity and I was glued to the tail end of an 18 wheeler riding by the light of his taillights... scary scary shit but really exhilirating when I got out on the other side to a warm, wet, summer evening that would have been pleasant except that my leathers were soaking wet... the lining in my jacket doesn't zip out and it's a thick winter one... probably added a good 35 pounds of water... couln't get out of my leathers when I got home!
How I haven't had a serious crash yet is completely beyond me. It will probably happen when I'm just out to grab a slushiee from the gas station down the road and riding in flipflops!
I don't care, I'll ride any time as long as there is no ice on the roads.

HELL YA! About mid-winter I always get the itch. Have to turn up the space heater in the garage to warm up the bike just so it'll start. Throw on the snowmobile suit and go for a COLD ass ride!

i couldnt decide for the longest time between a sport bike and an old harley for my first bike... but sport bikes are so exciting to ride. they accellerate, brake and handle better than almost ANYTHING on the road, 2 wheels or 4. but i've still got a deep urge for an old sportster. for some reason i've got a soft spot for sportsters and cafe racers.... i LOVE cafe racers! and by the way, i'm almost done with my bike... did all the work myself. it was GREAT to get out and ride saturday and today :)

Haha, the place names are the same as in England, so it sounds to me like your talking about england, but your not, your talking about america which for some reason amused me when i started writing this post, but no longer amuses me on the same level it once did. Oh crap, i wasted a post. Woops. Well, i once had a 250CC dirt bike, cant even remember the make. Went good though, very nice over jumps. I used to take it down the BMX track and wack it about their over all the jumps. And i took it through all the fields near me. LOL. I was a nutter, but i only fell off once. Then i took the engine off and got a new once, same CC, put all that back in, and that all worked fine and i was riding about and as i was stopped i met someone in a feild next to a train track and he offered to buy it, and he gave me £500 for it so i ended up selling it. I kept the helmet though, as a reminder. It's an old helmet now though. It's been dropped so many times i wouldnt trust it.

Massachusetts is full of place-names (and stodgy Puritanical attitudes, lol) from the original English folk who settled here way back when... That, and entirely unpronounceable Native American place-names by which you can easily tell the tourists apart- they tend to mangle them lol!

My mom has an '06 Suzuki GSXR...I worry about her alot, mostly b/c we live in Atlanta, so it's really busy and there are alot of ignorant drivers. But she's been riding since she was a teen, so she knows what she's doing.
She's been trying to get me to buy one, but then, of course, my husband would want one, and that's not gonna happen (then I'd worry about both of 'um!) She's so cute on it though...she's 5'3 and very petite...with pink leathers!...I wish I had that pic on my computer...maybe I can find one...:D

People told me it was too big for a girl my size, everyone told me to get a 250 or I would regret it, and so far my only regret is not going bigger then 600!!
I should have gotten the 750 at least... There is always next year tho!

haha, i'm hugely against blinged out sportbikes. to me, that bike is quite hideous. i wouldnt ride it. chrome and all that shit is exactly the opposite of what sportbikes were made for. i think sporbikes should have fairly simple paint, little/no metal flake, and minimal stickers. that is just my taste. they were made to go fast, not look like a harley (dont take that wrong, i like harleys :) ).
to me, a nice paint job on a sportbike is simple and clean, with enough different colors/designs to just break up the lines. bikes like the one above just have too much shit for me, i think it's unsportbike-like to throw a whole shit ton of money into stuff that doesnt make you faster. i like to ride, not clean and stare :)

I used to live in Holland and during the winter I rode to work one evening (I was working nights for Heineken) and it was -21 degrees, only about 12 miles but man was it cold.
The worst was when I was doing my forklift licence and I had to ride about 30 miles , it was -15 , blowing a gale and sleating all day long , I was leaning the bike just to go in a straight line.
Every time I stopped I was putting my hands on the engine block to stop them from freezing off , I never felt so glad to see the end of a journey , I've covered a couple of hundred miles in one day before but that was nothing compared to those few miles in such shitty conditions , after that nothing stops me riding.

I started on a little ninja ex500 gave that to my wife and got a 1998 Ninja ZX-7R I've down some work to it I polished the frame and some engine work and added about 30hp rejetted, k&n filter, new sprockets etc., now since I wrecked I'm going to be bringing it inside and doing full custom plastics strip and polish the rims and touch up the frame again. NY winters are long so I should have more then enough time I also sold my Honda Shadow plus some this year for a 1994 heritage softail for my dad since he bought me my first bike, only 800 miles on a 94.
Here's some pics of the Ninja not the best angles and there before I polished the frame, they day after I finished I wrecked still rideable but not so good looking.

Been riding since the 70s.Nothing better for clearing the ol' head, works almost as well for me as meditation.I love the old girl just wish I had a bike that was a bit more roadworthy (brakes!!!!).
My current bike is the maroon and white 60 pan and the flamed 51 is my old bike that I had in the 80s.
What I wouldnt give for a bike that didnt take me two weeks every spring to get ready for the season and had brakes and stuff didnt break off every 100 miles....I bitch alot but Id never give up the old girl.I actually enjoy working on her,in some ways its a bit of a stress reliever. While I bitch about it,every spring I put Marvin Gaye on the CD player and rub the old girl down, just a little "alone" time for me and my bike.Yup I can hear the music now..."Lets get it on..ooo weee"

Oh sure you can say it,wont be anything I havent heard before. Its one of those things though that I can what ever I want about my brother but everyone else better tread lightly. Its no big deal and I understand its all in fun.I do ride my 47 year old bike though,in fact when I got out to the West Coast people assumed I trailed it out from Wisconsin.I do like the fact that most people couldnt (or maybe wouldnt want to)keep an old girl like this running and drive7-8k on a summer trip.Brakes are my next big upgrade. When I got it the bike was pretty original and I started pulling off and replacing all the stuff that didnt work (Linkert carb,6 volt, leaky org.gas tanks, etc.) and all the old Harley guys were screaming that I was nuts and ruining the value and all of that.Shoot since I ride it everyday Id like it work half way decent.I kept all of the old parts though, not that Im ever putting it back to stock but I might sell all of that stuff some day (org.seat,bags,tanks,etc.).

The technology from old harleys to new ones is hardly even similar just one of the many major differecnces is the cam shafts the new cams are completely different they are made to give the same sound that harley is famous for however once the bike isn't idling the similarities end, I work on the 94 heritage and made some changes to the 07 fat boy of his and even that close age wise the technology is extremely different the new bike is basically made to sound and acted similar while being more reliable so it seems the same until you start working on them and then it's night and day

10-25-2007, 02:37 AM
very recently they have made some major changes because of the new popularity of honda and other foreign cruisers so harley has changed many things lately to improve there comfort smoothness and acc. to keep inline with them as well as continue to hold there die hard customers off course most of my info has come from harley reps during the 07 and this year the 08 line release when harley comes to let you ride the new models so who knows how much of what he says isn't just trying to sell me the product and bc im younger he thought thats what i wanted to hear idk maybe the few things ive done to the newer bike are the only changes lol but I'm sure you are right that harley is harley and there not and havent changed all that much I think I over stated how much has changed more then I meant to

As far as where I was at that rate of speed(that I assume would be accurate from my speedometer at the time)it was on an interstate around 3:00 am and there were roughly twenty other riders-all Busas! No traffic! As far as my speedo goes it's purely stock. No illumiglo or any aftermarket. I have a factory limiter(180mph I believe). It was a true experience for me and I enjoy riding (safely). Hey Shovel, have you ever been to Laconia (sp?).Its one of the events Id like to get to before I kick off, also Riudoiso (sp?) is another one Id like to get to.In the past few years Ive stayed away from the big rallies as its all dentists, accountants, and lawyers trying to look menacing.Dont get me wrong,I have nothing against what these folks do for a living, but the whole thing has changed so much. Its more about status and things like that.I broke down a couple of years back (broken primary belt) and had a spare it just took a while (4 hours) to fix it on the side of the road.As I was working on it,I swear over 200 hundred bikes (mostly Harleys) went by.The people that did stop were older travelers in mini vans.I had one couple drive back into town to get me a 1 and 1/4 socket (I think that was the size)that I forgot to put in my bag.She held an umbrella over my head (it was over 90 degrees) and gave me lemonade to drink, that whole deal really restored my faith in humanity.Anyways I dont mean to rant, just a cratchity old fart talking about the old days I guess, haha.Well take care,be well, and most of all be safe.

Psychocat, times have changeed, people have changed. Bikers aren't as helpful to each other as they should be. I alwaysstop for a rider who appears to be in trouble. Putting Aa helmet or cap by the side of the road 1 few meters behind the bike should signal that the biker needs assistance and isn't just taking a smoke break or handling a cell phone call.

Been fine weather to ride this Spring. Today I took my wife and we stopped at my bud's grave (he wrecked his xl1200 7/1/05). I says. "lookie there, must be thirty little marijuana seedlings around his stone." (and another thirty here and there off in the woods around the cemetery) My bud would be proud.

I stopped at that cemetery again. My bud's family pulled the weed and planted flowers. wtf? <G>
Memorial Day motorcycle runs today everywhere. Vermont Thunder had hundreds of riders. DC rally has tens of thousands of bikes.

not to call you out, but the oil pickup on SV's are just like those on TL's, they're in the front, so wheelies = blown engine. So all i can figure is your lying, or you never got very good :D

I was more of a parking lot guy, not highway...but thanks for the call out! didnt say I rode up and down the freeway doing a wheelie, thats not stuntin...
used the SV for acrobatic slow stuff, skiing, indos and skitching.... highchairs, stoppies n such on the CBR....but thanks for asking before calling me out...Was the president of Ruff Ryders here for a while, but like I said, I got out of it, I would give you a few video links, but I dont want my face on here...so feel free to believe Im lying, dont really care......

ah. i've never really considered skitching as stunting persay, so i didn't think of it, but to each his own. i think highchairs are the one thing that when done correctly, are ALWAYS badass

IMO the stunts are great entertainment and I admire the talent it takes.
I do not like riders taking chances with stunts around people who don't want to be involved in a stunt gone wrong, such as other riders, dirvers or pedestrians.

I just got a 1979 CB650. I plan on restoring it over the winter, but since it's near cherry I'm riding the hell out of it now. Did some vape hits at a friends on the way home from work yesterday. I don't recommend combining the two. I looked down and realizied that I was doing 35 on the interstate. No more stony rides for me.

cool pics. I'm a n00b to motorcycles. just started getting into them very recently. I'm more into vintage bikes from the 60's and 70's like BSA, norton, triumph, Bultaco, and Moto Guzzi. I'm thinking my first bike will probably be a BSA or a norton, i love the way they look and ride.

No bro, not at Milwaukee. Must be nice though. I din't make Laconia either this year, which I quite often make it to.
Hey, I have, really hate the bad news but. A fellow I have visited and riden with recently was killed last night by an impaired drive. Jerk was on drugs and possibly drinking, pulled right out in front of him. He's in jail. Mark was 48 yo and had a wife and kids. He worked at Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream here in town. He moved here from California, his brother had just relocated here from Cali too. Prayers for his family, please.

It looks a lot like something Arlen Ness would build.
I think it's a bit too long and I'm not really into the shape but it certainly is eye-catching.
I am what some call a "rat" biker.
When it comes to my everyday ride , I rarely clean it, I fix it when it needs it but I'm not too bothered how it looks.
These are more my style...

Had an MRI scan today , I get the results in around 10 days.
I'm hoping they can figure out what the hell is wrong with me . (Apart from the psychosis :D)
I had to quit riding , I get sudden twinges of pain that just make it too dangerous for me to be on the road, I'm absolutely hating it..
It's only been this way for a short while and I keep looking out the window at my bike and wishing I could just jump on it and ride , get out on the motorway and blow away all the cobwebs , then take the twisty narrow country roads to test my skill and daring.
Thank god I have my ganja and guitar to take my mind off it a little. :stoned:

Another long time (considering I'm only 30) motorcycle rider here.
I've got an 04 Ducati Monster 620 that I bought after I crashed my Suzuki TL1000R last year.
Held out for a month after the crash before I had to buy another one. I was jonesen so bad I just went to the dealer with a check and said I want that one!
The ironic thing about the crash was the fact that I was up in the foothills when it happened and I stood up got about 5 steps and heard my cell phone beep, Battery DEAD. I didn't get home till late that night.

Since my last post when my scooter was sitting in it's shack. A week ago I rode it to my bud's garage and tore into it. New top end gaskets, hone and ring, new clutch hub, new ignition system and general PM. All done now, ready for a break in this shit weather so I ride it back home and wait until Spring.
