In England and Wales the legal age for buying tobacco products is being raised in October from 16 to 18. It's an attempt to stop kids under 16 buying tobacco illegally, and to deter younger people from taking up smoking.
Personally I don't think there will be a huge drop in the number of underage smokers. I don't know, maybe I'm just bitter because I won't be able to buy cigarettes til November 2008 come October heh.

I support this initiative, mainly because i despise tobacco. Will it stop 16 year olds from smoking cigs? I really doubt it.

will it stop those who really want to smoke? no... will it decrease the ammount who do smoke that are under 18, yes, definately... may be kind of hard to really beleive, but there are going to be alot of them out there who say 'fuck it, it's to much trouble now'.... is it a good idea? not nessicarily... unless they specify just tobacco (which i highly doubt) this will also include blunts, papers, pipes/bongs and everything like that... i'm not sure if 'kids' in england are allowed to buy this stuff now at age 16... but if they are... atleast as of now...i wouldn't be to suprised if come october you find out you can't anymore...
Now, is this law for buying AND smoking, because they was a time where they said they were looking at making the age 18 to buy, but you could still smoke legally at 16.
To be honest, i dont belive it'll make much differnce, as they cant exactly arrest anyone and they cant confiscate it either. People just wouldnt take them seriously.
Saying that though, i hope it does work. Way too many kids are smoking.

The law here is you can smoke in private at any age, but have to be 16 to buy tobacco products. Also, I believe police can confiscate cigarettes from kids who are clearly underage if they are smoking in a public place.

yes thats correct, if someone clearly under the legal age is seen smoking in public the tobacco products will be confiscated, this is really hard typing in full english but i now realise that not many people understand me when i dont lol

That is terrible!!! Of course it won't make any difference to me, because I live in the U.S. But for all you people in England and Wales who will be effected by this new, discrimonatory law, I am with you!!!!
I'm not saying anyone should, or shouldn't be smoking, but a law like this is age descrimination, if they don't want people to smoke then they should try to educate people about the health effects or something, NOT make descrimitory laws. Of course, haveing a minimum age limit of 16 is also discrimination, but this new law is even MORE discriminatory.
Fuck modern governments...

Dammit, you just reminded me that smoking is now banned in all Washington DC restaurants, bars and clubs.
BAH-HUM-BUG, you suck DC.
As for the decrease in age law, it's not going to deter anyone. When I was underage, I had no problem getting cigarettes, there's always some business trying to make an extra buck off kids buying cigarettes.

lol dude, around here, we're not even allowed to smoke in 'public' anymore... basicly... you're allowed to smoke in your private home and that's about it... public property, and it's nah-uh, even outside.
anyone else notice this sudden world-wide crack down on smoking?

hey mr. one. I feel for you..
this is kinda weird and hard to explain.. cause I know it is fun to smoke...
there will be a time in your life.. comig very soon.. that you will realize or maybe even wonder what DAMAGE smoking has done to you..
It will just sneak up on you.. you are so NEW so young so vibrant NOW.. at 15- 16 you are not even fully developed....
and it is very possible that in 5-10 years you will get into some sort of activity that requires maximum health... and somewhere in the back of your mind.. you'll always be wondering..
HOW MUCH BETTER would I be if I had NEVER smoked?
People who smoke cigs all have ONE thing in common... they are all trying to quit.. it is a tough tough group to be in...

this pisses me off... the reason most kids start smokin, is because they think they look cool, not because they are old enough, i smoke, and i say this is a load of shit, they are already banning smoking in pubs n shit, and now they wanna raise the age to 18 like in america...
are they actually trying to discourage children? or just squeeze smoking out of society altogether?
this shit pisses me off, tobacco is legal, but now they tell us we can only smoke in our homes if we r over 18, it used to be, smoke anywhere at pretty much any age, you only had to be 16 to BUY them...
...pass me the talcum powder...
...im bout to pimp-slap the government....:)

Smoking has been removed in public places here also..
Outdoors and in your own home.
You have to be 19 in Canada to buy even tobacco like products (rolling papers, pipes)
Smokers are jokers.
Tokers are better :)

the more laws, the more corrupt.
2 laws are all thats needed in my opinion.
#1. keep your hands off me/others
#2. Keep your hands off my property/whats not yours
