Mosque plans trigger neighbor's pig races

KATY, Texas (AP) -- A man unhappy with an Islamic association's plans to build a mosque next to his property has staged pig races as a protest during afternoon prayers.

Craig Baker, 46, sold merchandise and grilled sausages Friday for about 100 people who showed up in heavy rain. He insisted he wasn't trying to offend anyone with the pigs, which are forbidden from the Muslim diet.

"I am just defending my rights and my property," Baker said. "They totally disrespected me and my family."

Muslims don't hate pigs, they just don't eat them, said engineer Kamel Fotouh, president of the 500-member Katy Islamic Association in this Houston suburb.

"I don't care if he races, roasts or slaughters pigs," said Yousef Allam, a spokesman for the group.

The dispute began when the association asked Baker to remove his cattle from its newly bought land. The association plans to build a mosque, community center, athletic facilities and a school.

Baker agreed to move his cattle but thought the Muslims also wanted him off the land his family has lived on for more than 100 years.

Earlier this month, Baker conceded that the Muslims probably aren't after his land, but he said he had to go through with the pig races because "I would be like a total idiot if I didn't. I'd be the laughingstock now because I've gone too far."

All the same, Baker plans to continue the weekly pig races until interest dwindles.

The association never meant to imply it wanted Baker to move, Allam said.

"If we somehow communicated that to him, then we apologize," he said.

Resident Susan Canavespe said the pig racing wasn't mean-spirited -- "It's just Texas-spirited."

Maybe over seas. But in the US I doubt they would have anti semitic remarks in there text books. Schools still need to be accredited here. But then again we got poor school systems that are teaching out of 20+ year old text books. Most middle easterners here in the states also came here to get away from the mayhem and to live better lives. Just like the anti Mormon movement in the early 19th century we now have an anti Muslim movement going on here.

Unfortunately Islam does not have the same hierarchy like the Catholic church. Therefore religious reform would be quite difficult for them. And would need to be done almost on there government level. Since there religion and governments are almost one and the same its very easy for corruption to steer ether in the wrong direction. The arahamic religions have been at war with each other since there creations (Christianity , Judaism, Islam). The only difference now as to how they fight has only changed with technology.

Well the real point of this topic was about someone who acted immaturely on preventing Muslims from there freedom of religion in the US. Even though you feel because of the actions of a few they should all be classed as terrorist and be denied there right to practice there believes here. Muslims are not all bad people. Yes they have there bad seeds, as do all other religions.

As for the treatment of women over there.. Yes they are not treated the same for the most part as women are here, true. But there are women who have been elected into office. With the taliban removed from government women are more free now than before. In the US Muslim women are treated no differently than a Catholic woman.

Folks like ZimZum,who make excuses and apologies for muslim radicals,certainly will never speak out on the abuse and treatment,that muslim women recieve under Islam. It's kinda like the death penalty thread,there is little or no compassion coming from his side,about the gaurds who have to risk their lives everyday to keep murderers in prison for life and little or no compassion,for the victims of the murderer's - nor their family's,either.

As for the Texan,the way I see it,what he's doing is somewhat in poor taste..but what's worse ? Losing the land that yer family has been living on for over a hundred years to pc'ism and appeasement,or appeasing those whose religious zealotry,has caused and continues to cause,many deaths around the world-even as we speak ? Giving into the muslims out of fear of offending them,is wrong too.
