I would say its Paul McCartney, no contest. I am now convinced he is the greatest all around musician in rock history and probably one of the greatest singers ever recorded. He plays every instrument, is perhaps the greatest Bass player in rock history, and he is the greatest vocalist in rock history. Add to that the fact that he has written the most melodic music of the pastā?¦ well ever.

John Lennon was quoted as saying that McCartney was the best drummer in the Beatles. In addition to that he played lead guitar on almost all the Beatles songs in 66-67 (he was there bass player if you didnā??t know). Perhaps most impressive however is his vocals. He can pretty much pull of any type of singing , he does everything from a spectacular Robert Plant impression to Jon Andersoneaque Countertenor to Little Richard (but better) screaming. Can anybody come close to McCartney?

mcartney is a great musician. personaly i like steely dan, granted they are two guys, they still put out some amazing music. If you want to look at it from a $$ standpoint paul mcartney has sold more records then most record companys.

hendrix was an amazing guitar player, lets not forget the insaine bass and drum guys that had to play rythim section while jimmy played.

I agree that Paul McCartney is the greatest due to his amazing instrumental versatility, and his powerful voice. Even though he is not someone that I have ever bought a CD of his music either! I just have a ton of respect for his contribution to the bands he has worked with and the genre in its entirety.

And Steely Dan are FANTASTIC. Beyond fantastic. I've been a total Steely Dan addict for like 10 years now and STILL find new meanings in their songs... and the way that they have managed to add a real jazz sensibility to rock without making it TOO smooth is pretty intense.

I agree that PAUL MC CARTNEY is a great artist but at the end it all comes down to individual taste for me PAUL WELLER, with the JAM,STYLE COUNCIL & as a solo artist, plus all contributions to other artists albums. other wise known as THE MODFATHER

I agree, I am not talking about who makes the best music though. i am asking who is the best all around musiscian. Thats why I made references to the drum, piano, and guitar stuff along with his bass and vocals.

McCartney is great but I'm surprised no one has mentioned John Lennon in the same breath. If he hadn't been assassinated, he might have changed the world.

I am glad you said that since Lennon is my favorite musician, but again this thread is about best all around musician and McCartney is much better then Lennon in that area. It would also disqualify certain countertenors with fros from neo-acid rock bands.

I do however belief Plastic One Band to be the greatest rock record in history.

Chuck Berry.

Without him, you wouldn't have the Beatles, or Led Zeppelin, or Black Sabbath, or the Doors. He invented Rock n Roll back in 30's. 30yrs before the Beatles ever made it on the scene. Thank Chuck, because without him, rock n roll wouldn't exist.

I never cared much for the Beatles either. I love Lennon on his own and some of their last workings, but their early stuff is so lovey dovey, foo-foo pansy music. :p Like songs like "I wanna hold your hand" is no different than Britney Spears singing "Hit me baby one more time." It was crap pop music then as it is today, so no, the Beatles suck nuts I think.

Give me some Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin, not some fairy band with matching haircuts and suits singing about crap, hey, just like pop music today.

You missed the point of the thread.
It wasn't who was the earlier musician or who you think was a cooler musician. It was who is the best all around musician. Chuck Berry would be a weak choice, you could say he was the most influential, or made the best music, but not that he was the best all around , musician, he played guitar and sang, that was it.

The Rolling Stones had matching haircuts just as long as Beatles(It was considered rebellious in the early sixties, interestingly The Beatles were the first band to move away from the look, going with short hair at the height of the 60s) . Zeppelin would seem to have matching haircuts, just longer, think about it.

Robert Plant is a fairy, and he really does sing about crap.

Name three LZ songs and one will probably be stolen.
