put it in the bathroom when you take a shower,,, U got a humidifier??? Use it in a room with the cat...

minor colds,,,"upper respiratory infection" is not generally treated but,,, a major one is treated with antibiotics... DONT give it aspirin or human drugs...

does it have any sores on it's mouth??? that would be like cat VD,,,herpies and,,, also gives symptoms of a cold...

I'm sorry that your kitty is sick- they get SO miserable. Use a damp tissue to keep his nose from getting clogged with mucus. Be careful about his eyes, you don't want any cross contamination- he really doesn't need an eye infection on top of his cold. Get some vitamin A capsules and open just 1 on his food -do not repeat! Too much can make him sicker. It is usually fish oil based so he will eat it, if he's eating. Use a humidifier in the room he's in and try a little pot smoke - think about how it drys your mouth and nose. Pet him and love him a lot. - Granny:stoned:

well he is eating and hes running around and playing and everything...but the poor thing can barely breathe it seems like....

and now he started sneezing a bunch of times in a row and blood came out... but just a little bit.

hes been eating wet food and tuna and i gave him a little bit extra antibiotics tonight...

you really think i should get him high? i was gonna hold off til he was a bit older...

my cat got caught in the garage door while i was opening it and we took her to the vet, luckily nothing was broken.
i still cant figure out how she got on top of the damn thing, it has to be impossible but i guess its not considering it happened.

I wouldn't recommend getting him high or even simply giving him smoke, sick or not. It might just make his congestion worse, and while weed smoke helps some people (not all, I was one of the ones it made asthma worse in) with asthma and congestion, pets are uniquely different. They also sometimes react badly to smoke of any kind. You wouldn't want to risk making him sicker. And a pet with wheezing or asthma trouble is a pitiful sight. It'd be even more pitiful if you knew you'd caused him to be that way, right?

Sounds like he's getting better with just the treatment you're giving him, so just keep up the good work. Excellent job!

Good advice skink, give the little fella a mini sauna and let him cough all the phlegm up you can help by gently tapping his back during the process. Wrap him in a towel and go for it. Don't leave him directly over the heat. Use a towel as a tent and go under with him so he's comfy with his mom.

Having pets, part of it is dealing with the sickness that comes.

On an off note, I think tomorrow my husband is taking our 10yo ferret to be put down. :( poor guy. I'm sad but I feel he will meet up with the rest of his ferret family at the bridge. He's missed his friends.:( His little heart is broken and he's just surviving, has a cancerous sopt and recently his eyesight went. He lays to eat. It's time for me to be not selfish and let him go. bummer

Real sorry to hear about your ferret, Tootsie. That's sad. It is nice to think of him meeting up with his pals when he crosses over, though. He'll be healthy and happy and can see again in the Happy Hunting Grounds (animal heaven). And you'll still have the rest of your menagerie, right?

ok so it seems like the infection has toned down a bit.... he is still stuffy tho...

hes still eating and using the litter box normally... actually i had to wake up with him at 4am last night so i could watch him play and make sure he doesnt have another sneeze attack....lol.

now hes just laying next to me prolly wondering wth i'm doing with this silvery box with all these buttons...

my g/f works at an animal conservatory and her boss gave her a shot of penicillin that shes gonna give him in about an hour...

Thankyou everyone for your help and conern.

Fuego, didn't you say you'd already been giving him antibiotics? If he's on one type of antibiotics, he probably doesn't need any penicillin, which is another antibiotic. Also, animals can be allergic to penicillin just like people are, so be very careful with that one especially.

Skink
12-30-2006, 05:52 PM
I would not change the program,,,don't give it the penicillin... just run the antibiotics out that you are already giving... some antibiotics may have an adverse effect and you already know the cat is good with the ones he is taking and they seem to be working...

the antibiotics i was feeding him orally (clavamox) is just amoxicillin trihydrate and three days later...hes not getting any better...

so ive just been opening some human amox capsules and just feeding it with some milk or mixing it into some tuna water...

hes really healthy...running around and playing all the time... he just needs to kick this respiratory infection cuz these meds have got him sleeping all day and night...

don't over do it,,,relax... I didn't saty to give it a sauna,,,LOLz... just keep the humidity level up... IDK where you live but,,,if you got heat on that dries the air in the home... Just keep some water simmering in an open pot to raise the humidity level in the house... Fluids are good,,,is it drinking??? you might in this case give it something it will like,,,Soup,Milk,,,fluids do a few things like it will piss toxins and break up junk...

Oh ok...that shouldnt be a problem then since i live in a very humid part of the earth..:D

I was told not to give him milk yet cuz he's too young... but he hasn't really been drinking any plain water ever since i gave him tuna water...

and now i'm out of tuna cans so i dunno what hes gonna drink...

How long does it generally take for antibiotics to take effect in cats? cuz its been like 4-5 days now... plus i gave him a heavy dose yesterday.

MastaChronic

who knows?
i had a kitten once that died because its lungs got clogged, it drowned in its own fluids, so to speak.
i had no idea what was wrong with it. it was born a few days previous to its death.

Is it possible that you might take him to the veterinarian, Fuego? That's where he needs to go. There are free and low-cost vets you can visit. Call your nearest animal protection agency for a recommendation.

Definitely it's best not to give a cat or kitten cow milk. For one thing, they don't digest it well and it can give them diarrhea. Kittens have that problem worse than adult cats, but adult cats aren't meant to drink cow milk, either. Also, cow milk is a very muco-genic food. That is, it promotes the creation of mucus, which is the last thing that kitty needs more of in the area of its mouth and nose. Finally, if you're already giving it amoxicillin, chances are good it's going to have diarrhea anyway because that's an antibiotic that can kill the natural intestinal flora, which results in diarrhea. Let the kitten drink regular water when it needs to, or go to the pet store and find some kitten formula, which is fairly cheap, and mix that up for it. More tuna water would also be good if you can buy some more tuna.

If the cat's not responding to antibiotics, stop giving them to him. That means he doesn't have a bacterial infection but instead has a cold or something caused by a virus. Only bacterial infections respond to antibiotics. All the amoxicillin (or other antibiotics) in the world won't make a difference in a viral infection and will only end up causing other problems with his digestion. This is why he needs to go to the vet--because he's not improving and may have something more serious and infectious, particularly if he's never been vaccinated.

Hey birldgirl...

thanks for clearing the milk thing up i knew i wasn't supposed to give him that...
Kush has been to the vet already... thats where i got the clavamox :D

I already knew antibiotics dont work with viral infections... but i was just asking how long this should be taking because the bottle says not to use for more than 3 days on cats... but the vet said to give it to him for no more than 2 weeks (or until the bottle is finished)...

I just think thats too long to be giving a baby antibiotics but i may be wrong...

Sorry about the milk thing,,,I should of just said soup or something... if the cat is healthy in all other respects I don't think it is time to panic...

I did a search for you and this is a good read... I think this will help you understand better whats going on... let the cat rest,,,it sez this stuff takes 7 or so days to run it's course so be patient... it also says that if the cat is not eating and drinking it will get dehydrated and you don't want that to happen,,,so get the tuna water or anything you think it will eat and drink...

Thanks bg. You are right. but,
I couldn't do it yet. ::hangs head in shame::. He is eating, drinking and sleeping and of course pooping. I do know now that it really is time but it's very hard when there's some life left. This makes me feel horrible and I hope I haven't done him a disservice.:(

Ok, on to read more about the kitty. I sure hope he's feeling better!

Sure there is hon. You can snuggle the pet, hold him, pet him, talk to him and generally be right there for him. Sit with the pet and let him lay his head on your lap. Hand fed and water him, help with his hygeine and so on.
Comfort is a big deal when it comes to helping a pet recover from an illness.
Or when a pet is at the end of life, same thing, comfort and love.
They do appreciate it.

Well, punch him next time cuz it isn't funny. Tell him an "old lady" on your weed board said it was ok. It was a sad accident and I'm sure you loved your pet. So jokes about it aren't ok.

Take some asprin and drink lots of water so you're not too sick in the am. Maybe try to eat some toast with peanut butter too.

my cat got sick when I first got her, it was cute....she'd be super sleepy all the time so she'd just sit in your lap and sleep. and sneeze. right in your face. like she made it a point to run over and sneeze in your face haha

none of my cats have been sick since though, amazing immune systems on those things!
