Plant #'s To Space Ratio???

I currently have a 4x4x8 (LxWxH) closet with the walls painted flat white. I have a 400w MH for veg. and a 1000w HPS for flowering. I will be growing from seed and have blue haze seeds from homegrown fantaseeds just waiting to be sprouted. I have plenty of ventilation and the temps are good, but I do not know the amount of plants I can fit in a space like this. I want to know what number of plants you would start with to maximize the space I am using. I was thinking that I would plan to finish with nine full grown females, which meens starting with 18 (double for males of course). If you don't know already, this will be my first grow and I want to make sure I do it right and not half ass it. Thanks in advance to anyone who helps.

I have a Hydro Hut mini which is 39" x 39" x 6.5', slightly smaller but similar to your area - I too envisioned many beautiful plants so I started with 12 to account for a few males. Now that they have grown a bit and are ready to flower, I have had to give away 5 of them (all females), build a mother/cloning cab for another, and hang my circulating fan that was on the floor from the roof to make some floor space, and I still barely have room for the 6 left in there. Next time I will only do 4 in the hut, I think 2' x 2' per plant is about right to get maximum yield.

I think I buy into the notion that a few maximized plants will yield more than many cramped, modest yielding ones, since the available light is better utilized.

I have a 400 watt HPS in a closet right now and 4 plants under it.Its a squeezie,The light will cover a 2x2 area and overall 4x4 area.But the 4 are doing great.Just finishing under the HPS. Veg with shop lights,so in a week will start to flower 4more all the way with the HPS.I hope the 4 will do better with the 400watter than fluorescence.More light better bud.

So should I plan to finish with four females, my last question would it be overkill to use the 1000w on four flowering girls? and thanks for these helpful replies

no 1000 isnt overkill on 4 plants, have seen 3000 watts used on one large plant before.
if you have a 4 by 4 room would probably try to have atleast 8 females if starting from seed and you would still have room even if you ended up with a 2-3 more female plants than what you originaly planed.
all lights lose intensity at a great rate wich is why you should try to keep the plants as short as possible and just use more plants to fill the space not as easily done when starting from seed instead of using clones, if you was using clones you could run alot more plants up to as many as 3-4 per sq ft in a sog in the same 4 by 4 space.

Thanks Bejay. Thats what I was hoping to hear. I think I am going to aim for nine short females and get some nice fat top colas. Does anyone hear have expirience with growing blue haze?
